2 By: Zach Smith Both the boys basketball teams are looking like they should have a very strong season this year. The JV team, consisting of Jarred, Max, Logan, Robert, and Gavin, will only be playing eight games this season due to the fact that Logan and Robert have already played a full season of junior high this year. The team will be coached by Dane Curth once again this year. For the remainder of the season, the JV kids will dress for varsity games along with the normal team consisting of Matt, Jonah, Carson, Anthony, Zach, Conrad, Michael, and Kash. With a very athletic group of seniors, the varsity team has very high hopes for this season and will be disappointed with anything less than perfect. The road to the Breslin starts here. After losing Coach Krieg this summer, the Comets will be coached by John Martin, who the team is very excited and lucky to have. That means it is basketball season!! The girls started practice on November 10 th at 6:30 a.m. The first week was one hard week of conditioning in the morning and practice after school, but the girls pushed themselves and By: Kendra LaHaie made it through. The junior varsity team, coached by Mr. Grant, consists of many returning players: sophomore, Savannah Grimmer, freshmen Haley Jones, Katelynn Bell, Sarah Morse, Mya Curth, Olivia Backus, and Sophie Orsini. A couple new faces to the team are freshman Sky Demps and 8 th graders Sam Somers and Kameryn Hartman. Players on the varsity team are seniors Lauren Bell, Tori Zynewicz, Watchorn, and juniors, Chelsey Closs, Kendra LaHaie, Lily Alexander, Perri Jo LaLonde, Paige La- Haie, and Brianna Becker! The varsity is coached by Mr. Stefanski, once again. All the girls are very excited for this season and hope that the student section this year is the best it s ever been! Go Lady Comets! Page 2

3 Coach Spotlight: John Martin How do you feel about the upcoming season? Well, practice starts November 17th, and we lost some very key players in very important positions, our catcher, a couple pitchers, shortstop, and center field. But, oh! You mean basketball I am as excited as a kid in a candy store. What are some of your goals for the season? My personal goals are to maximize this team s potential, so they can reach their goals, and their goals are high. There are many of them using the B By: PerriJo word Breslin. Who do you think will be your biggest competition this year? I am thinking, Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian. They have a 6 6, and a 6 4 All- State Returnee s, and a point guard who is extremely quick. They may match up with us pretty well. Are you excited to be coaching the boys this year? Very excited for Comet basketball this year, boys or girls. Both teams are going to be fun to watch, and I am excited to be a small part of it. How have the first few practices gone? First week is always pretty easy on a coach, I sit and they run. 5 By: Wintergirl What are your plans after high school? I plan on going into the Air Force. What are your feelings about graduation? Are you nervous about it, scared, etc.? I am very, very nervous and scared about graduation. What are you going to miss about Mackinaw? I m going to miss everything! Especially my friends and teachers. What advice do you give to other students? Try not to live in a shell your whole life and instead, don t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Trust me, living in a shell only makes things harder and you might just surprise yourself by taking a peek outside. What is your proudest accomplishment in high school? My proudest accomplishment would probably be First Team All -Conference in Cross Country. What is your favorite high school memory? This year s cross country season is definitely my favorite memory. What do you hope to accomplish in your final year in high school basketball? I m hoping to improve a lot more, so I can be an asset to the team. By: Zach Smith How has your senior year gone so far? It s been pretty fun!! What do you like most about being a senior? I honestly can t pick just one thing because there are so many enjoyable moments. Are there any downsides to being a senior? It is really hard and sad to have so many lasts that you will never get to be a part of again. What are you looking forward to the most this year? I m really looking forward to basketball and hopefully putting a couple numbers on the banner. What are you going to miss most about high school? I am going to miss sports and my teammates/coaches that have made every sport so memorable. HAPPY THANKSGIVING! What are your plans for the future? What advice do you have for underclassmen? Next fall I will be attending Central Michigan University and will join their athletic training program leading to a degree in physical therapy. You are only in high school once, Mackinaw may be small but participate in every activity that you can, attend every sporting event, and try not to grow up too fast! You won t regret it. Page 5
