If you have any club events you would like to add to the county calendar bring them to the August County Council meeting on Aug. 16 th at 7pm or send to Jeanne at the 4H office. A criteria for members to receive financial support from the county was presented and approved at the meeting. For those members that come to county council to ask for financial help in getting to and participating in 4H events; you will want to read and review the new requirements to receive such help. The form is available from the 4H office and should be available at the riverside 4H website soon. At the August County Council meeting we will be working on County Committees. One of the 4H life skills is working on a committee. Members receive necessary points in their record books for serving on committees. So, if you would like to be on a committee or have ideas for committees that need to be formed come to the County Council meeting on Aug. 16 th. If you would like to be added to the County Council agenda for any meeting please let me know by the 1 st Friday of each month. The agenda for the next meeting and the minutes from the -previous meeting will be posted on the county website on the 2 nd Monday of each month so they may be reviewed prior to the meeting. If your request to be added to the agenda does not reach me before the agenda is sent to the office, you can be added to the agenda if you are present at the very beginning of the County Council meeting. Hope to see everyone on August 16 th at 7pm. Susan Marsh President - Riverside County Council smsmarsh@yahoo.com nbsp; Hello! Most of the members rushed home from Summer Camp and then came to this event. That is the 4H spirit. Each member and leader that participated received a special event t-shirt. We had many excellent demonstrations including goat milking, horse grooming, horse riding, tack for a horse, carting with a horse, rope making, goat and sheep showmanship, canning and jelly making and no one who tasted it will forget the ice cream making with goats milk. We had displays of all kinds; gardening, chicken and egg information, horses, ranch and fort built from legos and many more. We had an awesome petting zoo with calves, goats, lambs, chickens of all sizes and rabbits. I want to tell everyone what a great job the members did of taking care of their animals and cleaning up after them. Everyone worked together and we had a great time despite the heat. Thank you to the Kruggel s for the use of their super power fan and the patience to get us connected to the generator. And thank you to Mary Etta Bollman for her fans and extensive collection of extension cords she provided. Continued on next page

Several of the clubs were able to do small fundraisers at the event. In fact someone just contacted me asking where they can more apple butter. So whoever made and offered the apple butter get in touch with me for this person s contact number. We talk to people from all over Riverside County about 4H. We gave out information and brochures and collected names and phone numbers of future 4H members. Grooming Demonstration At Murrieta Cowboy Jubilee by Taylor Thomas It was great to represent the Horse Project for Perris Panthers by putting on a Grooming Presentation at the Murrieta Cowboy Jubilee. Yes it was HOT! But I sure enjoyed the smiles of the kids as they got to learn more about horses and grooming. I brought my horse "Flicka" a 14.1 Hand Haflinger to do the grooming demonstration with. I made a board with all the grooming tools and brought the actual brushes for kids to see and use on Flicka. Many were so excited to groom a horse so it was fun for me to do. I also had my sister Tara Thomas and EmilyAnn Baraohkov come and help me with my grooming demonstration.

Cowboy Jubilee Submitted By Amanda Penicks The Norco Mustangs 4-H Club participated in the Cowboy Jubilee on July 17 th. My parents and I demonstrated rope making by braiding several strands of twine together using an antique rope maker. Youth were able to make their very own lariats. Cynthia, Heather, and Michael Ross, along with Jenny McElroy, brought some mother hens with their chicks. Many educational boards were brought for display with titles such as: From Egg to Chick, Do Chickens Prefer One Color of Feed Over Another, The Effect of Chlorine on Mosquito Larvae & Pupae, and the Life Cycle of Insects, Go Milk! Got Microbes! and last but not least Go Organic. We enjoyed the day except for the triple digit heat. My family and I left early afternoon to take my dad home for work and to ensure my animals were still alive from the heat. Here are some pictures I took of our Riverside County 4-H members. Please note our new president taking a hand at the rope maker!! Go Susan!

Summer Camp Report Submitted By Devon Bean Pictures Submitted By Amanda Penicks Thanks to all of those who came to summer camp and all who helped make camp possible. Camp was a lot of fun this year. We had hiking, archery, games, swimming, crafts, movie night, a dance, and skit night. To see a slide show made by one of the councilors Kerri Olobri, go to A. Next year s theme is going to be adventurers. It is never too early to start fundraising and get the cost down. Hope everyone who came this year will want to come back and if you had a good time, make sure to tell all friends about it and get them to come next year. For all of those who did not come this year, you really missed out and should try to come next year. Special Thanks to Marian Welty, Faythe VanCleave, Julia, and Mr. And Mrs. VanCleave! Summited By Kathleen O Connell Have you ever been sundaed? Have you ever dreamed of having chocolate sauce, Carmel, strawberry sauce poured on your head, followed by whipped cream and nuts? As crazy as it seems, I did. My dream came true this summer camp. The camp is located in beautiful, cool Lake Arrowhead. The cabins held twenty girls, so you can guess that not much sleep occurred at camp. We did hiking, archery, indoor and outdoor games, swimming, skits and arts and crafts. The theme was Alice in Wonderland and the decorations made you really wonder if you were in Wonderland. Skit night was lead by a wonderful counselor named Kerri. The Match.com skit was hysterical. Everyone was really hyper on skit night. Capture the flag was intense. Camp would not have been such a memorable experience if it wasn t for Marian, Faythe, Julia, Dewey, Heather, Tony, and Nurse Betty. They are an awesome team. Now let me tell you about the food. It was to die for! Everyone kept saying that it was like wedding catered food, so tasty, every meal, every day. The counselors were awesome, they kept everyone together and positive. No drama. The camp felt like we were one big family and on the last day, everyone was sad to pack up and head down the mountain. If you missed it this year, start planning now to attend next year.

Orange County Cavy Show Report Submitted By Victoria Hickman On the 17 of July it was hot. So the Hickman, Penicks, and Bonde families decided to show there cavies at the Orange County fair where is was 25 degrees cooler. We started with showmanship. Victoria Hickman took first place in Junior Showmanship and her sister Mariah got first in Primary Showmanship. Amanda Penicks got second in Senior Showmanship. Nathan Bonde got third in Junior Showmanship and Jacob Hickman got fourth. Our cavies were having a great time because it was so much cooler that they did really well in the breed show. Victoria's American Black got Best in Show and Amanda's Teddy got Reserve in Show. Overall, it was a cool, fun and great day. Pictures Submitted By Amanda Penicks

Chino Junior Fair Submitted By Amanda Penicks Several Riverside County 4-H members exhibited small animals at the Chino Junior Fair on July 6, Those in attendance were Alexis Nachtmann and Nathan Bonde from Perris Panthers and Amanda Penicks from Norco Mustangs 4-H Club. Alexis Nachtmann entered 11 birds and won Best in Show, Champion Waterfowl, Champion Large Fowl, Champion American, Champion Meditteranean, Champion Asiatic, Champion S.C.C.L., Reserve Champion Large Fowl, Reserve Champion American, Reserve Champion Featherlegged, Reserve Champion Modern Game Bantam, and Reserve Champion Bantam Duck. Nathon Bonde also brought many birds, a rabbit, and his two dogs. Nathan competed in Small Animal Master Showmanship for the intermediate division. ( I m hoping Nathan will write an article with a list of his winnings). I, Amanda Penicks, entered the rabbit show bringing three Mini Rex. I won senior showmanship with my rabbit. I also entered the dog show with my Rat Terrier, Rhyle. I competed in showmanship, obedience, written knowledge test, and a breed identification test. I won a first in all classes. I also took 7 birds to the show. I won Champion Bantam Duck, Champion RCCL, Champion Bantam of Show, Champion OEG of Show, Reserve Champion OEG of Show, Best Modern Game, and senior poultry showmanship. I too competed in small animal master showmanship. At the Chino Fair Pygmy Goats are added to master showmanship. Nathan and I attended the fairs BBQ and awards banquet waiting two days to find out the results of small animal master showmanship. Nathan won the buckle for Intermediate and I won the senior division buckle. Alexis Nachtmann was unable to attend and won third place in the junior division. Guess what this is!

Avian Bowl Report Submitted by Amanda Penicks July 1 st not only begins a new 4-H year but a new year for avian bowl competitions. This year there will be four qualifiers before a state champion will be picked to compete in the National Avian Bowl in Kentucky next fall. The first qualifier was held at the fair in Del Mar, second we just completed at the Orange County Fair, the third will be in Fresno in January, and the fourth will be held in Ventura this March or April. This was my last competition in the avian bowl as a junior competitor. My team, The Clever Clucks, consisted of four members- Makayla, Bronson, and John who were all from the Ventura area. And I, Amanda Penicks, represented the team as captain from Riverside County. Our team placed third out of eight teams. Very tough competition. There were times I just could not push the button fast enough. This event is conducted by Dr. Francine Bradley of U.C. Davis Extension office. The contest covers a broad range of knowledge of the science and poultry industry. All information is taken from the National Avian Bowl Manual. Anyone interested in being on a senior team please contact me. State Fair Poultry Report Alexis Nachtmann Hi my name is Alexis Nachtmann and I am with Perris Panthers. I had the honor of representing Riverside County 4H at the California State Fair with my Champion birds that won throughout the year at local county fairs. I took 8 birds to the Best of Show and 15 birds to the Jr. Poultry Show. I am proud to announce that I received BEST OF SHOW in the State of California with my White Pekin Duck! I also received 2 1 st, 2 2 nd, 2 3 rd, and 2 Merit awards for my Best of Show birds. The birds I entered in the Jr. Show won Champion Large Fowl, Champion Mediterranean, Champion and Reserve Champion Waterfowl, Champion Large Duck, Champion Duck, Champion Heavy Duck, Champion and Reserve Continental, Champion Featherlegged, Champion Asiatic, Champion and Reserve Champion Bantam Duck, Champion Light Duck and Reserve American. I brought home 3 large placques, 12 1 st and 2 2 nd. The best part of the whole show was getting my name on the 33 year old Perpetual Trophy for having the most wins (a combination of market birds, eggs, best of show and Jr. show). I only entered two of those categories. I also received 3 rd Place in Showmanship out of 11 Juniors. It was a long drive to Sacramento but I slept most of the way and watched movies with my sister. My whole family went and we got to stay with my Nana for a couple of days and we saw a bunch of our cousins throughout the week. My favorite part at the State Fair was watching the Hypnotist every day on stage outside the poultry building and wishing I could go on Raging Waters! Oh, and the poultry building was so big and beautiful! There was lots of room for the birds the cages were huge! I hope I get the chance to do this again next year!
