Tips for Successfully Exhibiting Life Skills Projects at Joint Achievement Day It is a very busy few hours during check-in night. To make the jobs of staff and volunteers easier there are a few things you can do. o Please respect the 8:00pm deadline on Wednesday August 2 nd for entering items. NO LATE ENTRIES! o Note: Perishable items (Food, Cake Decorating, Floriculture, Gardening) are accepted between 8:00 am and 8:45 am on Thursday August 3 rd. o Staff at Joint Achievement Days can help you fill in your article tags when you arrive at the Apple Dome. o Food safety is an issue. All food entered for competition should be kept hot or cold, depending on the entry. The judge can refuse to taste anything that they suspect has not been handled safely. o If you have a hot dish entered in the foods class please bring a crock pit and have the food hot when the judge begins judging. Extension cords will not be provided. Please bring your own. o If you are bringing an item that needs to be kept cold, please keep it in a cooler, on ice or with an ice pack. o When placing your entries in the competition area, look for the Class (Class 3- Sewing) and the age group (Junior). o Remember all the judges are sent the 4-H newsletters and guidelines for each project in plenty of time to review them before the show. All judges are briefed before judging and have the opportunity to ask any questions from their initial contact by a 4-H office staff. The judges are chosen for their expertise in their specific class and follow a set of judging standards for each class they judge.

Kings County Joint Achievement Days: General Rules Inside and outside displays are not to be taken down or animals taken home until the program is finished. Disqualification will happen if this rule is not followed. Clubs can start to dismantle on Friday, August 4 th after the announcement of the winner has been made of the Grand Champion Livestock Showman competition. All animals must be on the grounds by 9:00am (Sheep, and goats) or 8:30 am (Cattle and Mini Horse) on the day they compete with the exception of rabbit, poultry, waterfowl, and market turkey, which must be on the grounds both days by 11:00 am Thursday and 8:30 am Friday or forfeit competition and 4-H NS Show qualification. Animals being used in Grand Champion Livestock must arrive on the grounds by 2:00 pm on Friday, August 4 th. All 4-H families are asked to help with the cleanup. All clubs are responsible for their own clean up/take down of indoor and outdoor display areas. Hay and straw should be hauled home. If a conflict in scheduling arises, showmanship classes will be delayed until all members are present for classes or by the judge s discretion. However, if you have a conformation class that you cannot attend, another 4-H member may show your animal in conformation for you. Conformation classes will NOT be delayed. A member CAN NOT compete at the Nova Scotia 4-H Show without first completing their project at Achievement Day. As approved by the Kings County Council (March 2010 Kings Council Meeting); If a member does not judge the project that they are enrolled in, then you cannot go to provincial show within any competition related to that project. Members are to wear appropriate dress for their classes (refer to Provincial Rules & Project Newsletter). For sun and safety reasons, members may wear a sun safety hat in an outdoor ring. All life skills and homemaking project articles will be judged and presented with ribbons on the Thursday, August 3 rd. All champion winners will be presented trophies at the 2017 Kings County Banquet this fall (date and location to be announced). For all project competitions (i.e. Bake Off competition, photography competition, Beef Clipping etc.) members must have been pre-registered in order to compete. All competition participants receive flat ribbons (no Champion or Reserve Champion ribbons awarded), except in the case of Grand Champion Livestock Showman and Grand Champion Life Skill Showdown. There will be a competition of the club displays. Neatness, attractiveness and use of theme will be considered in judging. There will be a winner chosen for the best indoor display and best outdoor display. Results for the club display competition will be announced prior to the start of the Grand Champion Livestock class.

People with dogs are asked to keep them away from the livestock in the arena. Thank you! To ensure the SAFETY of all members and guests at Achievement Day stay aware of your surroundings, especially with livestock animals. All animals being used for the Grand Champion Livestock Class must be on the grounds by 2:00 pm on Friday. All rabbits, poultry, waterfowl, cavies, market turkeys may leave the grounds at the completion of the day s events on Thursday but must return to grounds and be on display by Friday at 8:30 am. The Judge s Decision is Final!!

What ribbons will I get and why? Who gets to go to Proshow? Life Skills: Each member will receive an Achievement Day completion ribbon for their articles. One ribbon will be given for each set of articles in a project, not per article. (ex. One ribbon for your food item and your recipe binder together). Life skill projects are split by junior and senior and then are judged. Photography will be used as the example, but this process is the same for all life skill projects. Non-recognized life skill projects (Lego, Shooting Sports, etc.) will all be judged as a Project called Showcase instead of with their separate projects. Therefore if you are in photography and are a junior, your items will be judged against all other junior photography items regardless of section (Level 1 Album, Framed Subject, etc.) Ribbons will be given out to Junior Champion (1 st place), Reserve Junior Champion (2 nd ), 3 rd through to 10 th for juniors. Seniors will receive Senior Champion (1 st place), Reserve Senior Champion (2 nd place), 3 rd through to 10 th. The items that receive Junior Champion, Reserve Junior Champion, Senior Champion, and Reserve Senior Champion will be eligible to move on to NS 4-H Show. Next the junior and senior items will be judged together. One item will be awarded Champion Photography Item, and another one will receive Reserve Champion Photography Item. These ribbons are for bragging rights only, and have no influence on the eligibility of NS 4-H Show. These ribbons could go to items belonging to both juniors, or both to seniors, or one to each. Judging: Members who completed judging at Kings County Judging Night or at the Beef Judging Night were participating in the judging competition. Scores were given based on how members placed the class compared to the official judge and how they gave their reasons. The members for each project will be placed from 1 st to 10 th in their age category (junior/senior). For example, Beef will be used. Junior beef members who judged at the beef judging night will get placed based on their scores from 1 st to 10 th thus receiving these ribbons on their judging cards. Senior beef members will also get placed 1 st to 10 th. The top junior beef judge and the top senior beef judge will be eligible to move on to NS 4-H Show. The top two ribbons will be rosettes and 3 rd -10 th will be flat ribbons. The top score for beef judging regardless of age will receive a Champion Ribbon, and the second highest score will receive a Reserve Champion Ribbon. These ribbons are bragging rights for members, and do not influence who is eligible for NS 4-H Show. Members who had to complete make-up judging were not eligible to compete in the competition, and only judged to receive their completion for their requirements. If a quiz was written due to lack of animals (ex. Waterfowl) these scores will be used to choose an eligible junior and senior member to compete at NS 4-H Show. Members in the non-recognized projects will still receive ribbons but they will not be eligible to compete in the judging competition at NS 4-H Show. Livestock: Livestock projects are judged in a variety of ways depending on the project. These will be broken down into groups and explained below. Achievement Day : Members will first be grouped by age (junior/senior) and by club. They will complete a showmanship class in a smaller group allowing for feedback from the judge. They will receive an achievement day ribbon (1 st, 2 nd, or 3 rd ) based on how well they perform based on their age and experience. All members could receive 1 st place ribbons if they all perform to their best abilities. Members in Dog, Rabbit, Poultry, Waterfowl, and Mini Horse will have this class combined with their Competitive.

Market Animals will only complete this class to receive their completion. They all automatically will go to NS 4-H Show. This applies to Market Steer, Market Lamb, Market Goat, and Market Turkey. Competitive : After the achievement day completion showmanship, the members will be split into two classes (junior class and senior class). They will go into the ring with the other members in their age category to compete in a showmanship class. For example, all junior sheep members will go into the ring for Junior Sheep. They will get placed Champion Junior, Reserve Champion Junior, 3 rd through to 5 th. Senior Sheep Showman will get placed Senior Champion, Reserve Senior Champion, 3 rd to 5 th. The top junior and top senior will be eligible for NS 4-H Show. The top two juniors and top two seniors will come in the ring again together for the Champion Sheep showmanship class. A Champion and Reserve Champion will be awarded. These do not determine who goes to NS 4-H Show. The Champion and Reserve Champion sheep showman will be invited to compete in the Grand Champion Livestock. Conformation: Conformation classes are based on the breed and/or age of the animals (ex. Junior Holstein calf, Suffolk ewe, chevon goat, senior Simmental heifer, etc.) Members will take their animal in their respective class. Sheep: In their respective classes (ex. Suffolk ewe, Dorset ewe, ram lamb, etc.), these sheep will be placed 1 st through to 5 th. The top two from each class will be eligible to move onto NS 4-H Show. The top two ewe lambs from each class will go into the Champion Lamb class along with the top two ram lambs. One in this class will receive Champion Sheep and another will receive Reserve Champion Sheep. Goat: In their respective classes (Doeling, Dry Yearling, Milking Doe, Chevon), the goats will be placed 1 st to 5 th. The top two from each class will be eligible to move on to NS 4-H Show. The top two from Doeling, Dry Yearling, and Milking Doe will move into the Champion Dairy Goat Class. One will receive Champion and another will receive Reserve Champion. The top two Chevon goats will automatically also receive the Champion and Reserve Champion Chevon Goat. Beef/Dairy: Beef and Dairy are split by breed and age. For example a Hereford calf born in Jan 2017 will go into Junior Hereford Calf class, but a Holstein heifer born in Jan 2017 will go into the Intermediate Holstein Class. The age categories can be found in the Project Newsletter. Members will take their calves in their respective age/breed class first. Example: Herefords. The junior class, intermediate class, and senior class will all place 1 st to 5 th. The top two from each will be eligible to move onto NS 4-H Show. The top two from each will go into the Champion Hereford Class. One in this class will receive Champion and one will Reserve Champion Hereford. This process will be done for each breed category including Feeder Steer. The Champion and Reserve Champion from each will go into the Champion Beef Calf class. One will receive Champion and one will receive Reserve Champion. Rabbit: Rabbit is split into their show categories (4 showroom, 6 showroom, and pet rabbit). The pet rabbit class will include all pet rabbits regardless of breed, age or sex. This class will be placed 1 st to 5 th, and the top two automatically receive Champion and Reserve Champion Pet Rabbit. The first place pet rabbit will be eligible to move onto NS 4-H Show. The 4 Showroom and 6 Showroom are split by age and sex. There are four categories (Jr Doe, Jr Buck, Sr Doe, Sr Buck), and your rabbit would fit into one of these. They go into the classes based on these classifications. Each Class is placed 1 st through to 5 th. The winner of each class will be eligible to move onto NS 4-H Show. The top two from each class in 4 Showroom will move onto the Champion 4 Showroom Rabbit class and the same for 6 Showroom Rabbits. In the Champion classes one member will receive Champion and another will receive Reserve Champion.

Poultry: Poultry are classified by age and breed category (American, English, Continental, or Bantam). If they are born in 2017 they will be a junior trio, and if born before 2017 they will be a senior trio. The trio will be placed into one of eight classes (ex. Jr American, Sr Bantam, etc.) Each class will be placed 1 st to 5 th. There will be a Champion and Reserve Champion chosen for each breed category (ex. Champion American, Reserve Champion American, etc.) The Champion from each breed category will be eligible to move onto NS 4-H Show. Waterfowl: Waterfowl are classified by age and breed category (Light, Medium, Heavy, Bantam, and Goose). If they are born in 2017 they will be a junior pair, and if born before 2017 they will be a senior pair. The pair will be placed into one of ten classes (ex. Jr Light, Sr Bantam, etc.) Each class will be placed 1st to 5th. There will be a Champion and Reserve Champion chosen for each breed category (ex. Champion Medium, Reserve Champion Medium, etc.) The Champion from each breed category will be eligible to move onto NS 4-H Show. Mini Horse: Mini Horse Members can compete in Pleasure Driving, and Barrels if they are capable to and want to. The classes will be run in their age categories (ex. Jr Driving, Sr Barrels, etc.) Each class will be placed 1 st to 5 th. The top two Juniors and top two seniors for Pleasure Driving, and top two Junior and top two seniors for Barrels will be eligible to move onto NS 4-H Show.
