We had a very busy January starting with the New Year s Party which was a HUGE success. I'm very proud of everyone who has made it happen and I look forward to the support in upcoming months. January also brought in 9 new members and I would like to take this time to welcome them to our club. I look forward to seeing you and hope you can find the time to participate in the upcoming functions or perhaps volunteer your time at one of the fundraisers or parties we are throwing. It helps us as a club with participation in Thursday dinners, parties, and fundraisers. We do care and share as a club. I for one, thank you all, and ask that if you have an idea or a question please don't hesitate to bring it to us, the Officers, Trustees, or PER s. Be safe and remember we're turning another page together and with your support we can make it a great one. Exalted Ruler - Ken Cesta Secretary Message January was a busy month at the lodge. We held our Wild Game which is always a great success with the best food around. We held our initiation on January 18 th and welcomed 9 new members : Gwenevere Schaller, Robert Schaller, Andrew Schaller, Emily Schaller, David Hebeeb, Stephen Arbogast, Ronald Richardson, Terry Bale, and Chris Ciersczwski to our lodge. We also reinstated Rodney Roberts. If you know anyone who wants to join the best lodge in the state of Michigan bring them down and show them what we have to offer our members and family. There is still time for delinquent members to pay their dues before they are dropped. If you know anyone who is late remind them time is running out. February is here and its going to get busy at the lodge. There is a Fish Fry February 3rd serving the best fish in the area. Super Bowl party is February 5th. Get your tickets for good food and fun. If you have any changes in your information for the lodge contact me at or leave at the lodge behind the bar. New Dues notices will be sent out soon. Lodge Secretary Mike Wrobel

We helped welcome 9 new members to the Elks with a chili and soup meal. Thank you to Mike and Debbie Wrobel for their great food!. We wrote a check and donated to the Major Project for $365 and purchased a new glass cleaner for the bar, which was badly needed. February is going to be super busy. Anyone who wishes to attend the meeting to hear what 365 is all about is welcome and the Elkadys would welcome anyone who would like to help prepare food for after the meeting. 3 To Our Absent Members Don McKay - PER Born January 8, 1923 Initiated June 21, 1974 Life Member February 5, 2003 PER-1979/1980 Officer of the year 1987 Elk of year 1980 Died December 20, 2016 Eleventh Hour Toast You have heard the tolling of 11 strokes. This is to remind us that with Elks, the hour of 11 has a tender significance. Wherever Elks may roam, whatever their lot in life may be, when this hour falls upon the dial of night, the great heart of Elkdom swells and throbs. It is the golden hour of recollection, the homecoming of those who wander, the mystic roll call of those who will come no more. Living or dead, Elks are never forgotten, never forsaken. Morning and noon may pass them by, the light of day sink heedlessly in the West, but ere the shadows of midnight shall fall, the chimes of memory will be pealing forth the friendly message, "To our absent members." 4 Sophie & Mrs. Claus Even though Christmas is behind us and we look forward to spring I want to thank everyone who helped me with the party. I don't want to call you out by name as I fear of missing someone, but so many of you helped, even in the littlest way please accept my sincere thank you. We could not do parties without all your help, all the donations, all the work set up, clean up, cooking, wrapping, and everything in between. Also, I need to thank Santa and Mrs. Claus for taking time out of the busiest week of their year to stop by and visit all the kids and folks at the Elks. I was happy when Santa answered my call and said he would make a point to stop as he knew how many good kids we had that wanted to see him. Santa also wanted to thank the Elks for taking care of his reindeer on the roof while he was visiting, and making sure they had plenty to eat. Again, thank you everyone, and thank you again as I know some of you I called so many times who just jumped in to help, and others just showed up to help. Also, thank you everyone for all your donations of items. Lecturing Knight - Scott Thornberry Sophie, being one of the youngest children attending the Christmas Party, was asking Mrs. Claus if she was on Santa s List yet. Children had lots of fun at the Christmas Party making Reindeer Ornaments and decorating Ice Cream Cone Chocolate coated Christmas Trees. (Yummy - Yummy)

12 Jo-Brighton Carlson High School Basketball Games We have been putting our grant money to very good use over the past few weeks. We were able to support the Carlson High School Basketball teams and Boosters with the support of their 3rd annual Shooting for the Stars event on January 15th. The Carlson Student basketball teams square off with the basketball teams from Jo Brighton School. The Flat Rock Elks cooked and handed out more than 250 Hot Dogs, Cookies and Chips to all the players and support staff. We estimate we fed more than 180 participants. Carlson High does this day up right with the Pep-Band playing musical pieces every time there was a break in the games. The band helped keep the upbeat tempo of the day going at all times. The Carlson Boosters also provide a game day T-Shirt to all the players. I ll tell you one thing Growing kids sure can eat I mean a lot! Fun was had by all. I heard no complaints, but I did hear a lot of the magic word Thank You used by everyone all day. Jeff Recker PER ENF Chairperson
13 Shooting with the Stars Thank you for helping make our 3 rd Annual Shooting with the Stars such a Huge Success. By you providing lunch ( Hot Dogs, Chips, Water & Cookies) and preparing it for us, we were able to concentrate on the athletes. This event is the only tournament that Jo-Brighton Athletes get to do in a Normal High School and have all the perks and benefits our students get to have on a day to day basis. We all feel that our Carlson Athletes get way more out of it then the Jo-Brighton Kids. They learn the struggles some of these Kids face daily. Our goal is to treat them like a guest in our house and give them the best experience possible. So thank you again. Your help is truly appreciated. Theresa Camilleri Carlson High School
14 ARC / Woodhaven Warrior Games On January 21st we supported our 5th annual ARC/ Woodhaven High School Warrior Games with a full day of Basketball, Pizza, Cookies and Power-aid. This event now supports 8 basketball games and a set of skills competitions. Once again, the Warrior Students showed the best side of what being a Warrior means. This set of games started at 11:00 am and went till 4:00 pm in the afternoon. We went through 38 large pizzas that day. We fed more than 220 athletes, students, coaches and the staff of Zebras that kept the games under control. The Elks were given many kudos by the students, parents, athletes and coaches. The day ended with the traditional mass floor dance with everyone that was left at the event. DJ Ted had everyone up and moving. I was told by one of the referees that this is one of the best things he has ever been invited to participate in. I think we may even see a few new Elk members come out of this event. I want to thank all the Elks participants. We had a good group of Elk members on hand to assist in both events. I really hope that the Flat Rock Elks will help carry these 2 traditional events forward in the future. All day long all you see are huge smiles on everyone s faces at these events. Days like these show that the Elks stand behind the saying Elks Care, Elks Share. Please remember to support the ENF and all the events we participate in. We can always use a few more Elks at any of these events, even if you just come to watch and cheer at the games. Jeff Recker PER ENF Chairperson

Our Bell Third Thursday February 16 th Meat Loaf, Mashed Potatoes & Gravy, Vegetable & Salad Thank you from the Rummage Sale Committee. Special Thanks to all the workers and donators last year that helped make the Rummage Sales successful. We were able to pay for the children's gifts and Christmas Party. We are planning a spring Rummage Sale in April. Accepting donations after Super Bowl. The Boy Scouts of America, Mahican District (Downriver), is in need of volunteers for March 26, 2017 to help sell 50/50 raffle tickets at a Detroit Red Wing hockey game. Since this is considered gambling, all registered Scouts are prohibited from selling. Average sales are $12,000 $15,000. All money raised stays Downriver to support local units. Support for this can be for the good of the order and can be reported as assisting in raising the funds for the Scouts. Game time is 12:30pm with a call time of 11:00am, and you would work the first two periods and can then watch the remainder of the game if you choose to. A total of 30 people are needed, however, I am just asking for 5-6.
