5 DANCE CATEGORIES - TEAMS & OFFICERS Jazz Hip Hop Novelty Modern Pom Prop Military Lyrical Specialty Kick Sho Production Open In addition to Jazz, Prop, High Kick, Military, Novelty, Lyrical, Modern, Pom, Hip Hop & Sho Production, to more categories have been added for competition: Open Routines and Specialty Routines. Since COED has become a team classification, it ill no longer be a dance category. To enter the Open Dance Category, a routine must meet the folloing conditions: (1) it includes only full-time certified team members and (2) it is either a tap, ballet, light, or multi-cultural routine, or it incorporates at least to or more distinct styles of dance (such as half jazz, half high kick, or 1/3 prop, 1/3 military, and 1/3 high kick). Open Routines may be counted toard Seepstakes Aards at Regional & Classic Competitions. Tap routines require bringing your on tap boards to protect the gym floor. To enter the Specialty Routine Category, a routine must include performers that are not full-time certified members of the team such as dads, moms, males from a dance class or the school at large. First, Second, and Third place Trophies ill be presented for Specialty Routines at all of our contests. Specialty Routines may not be counted toard Seepstakes Aards at Regional & Classic Competitions. If you have any questions, please contact the MA Office by telephone at DANCE TEAM CLASSIFICATION Public High School team size determines its competitive division at an MA Dance Regional or Classic Contest: Small Team: 2-15 Medium Team: Large Team: Super Team: 50+ HS Junior Varsity HS Coed HS Pep Squad HS All Male HS Elite: HS Pep Squad and HS Junior Varsity members cannot also be a member of their school s Varsity Dance Team. Junior High/Middle Schools, High School Elite, High School JV, Pep Squad. All Private High Schools, Coed, and All Male teams as ell as Junior High and All Star/Studio groups do NOT compete by team size. In an effort to promote the male dancer in public schools and maintain fairness in competition, the folloing 4 team classifications have been established: H Public High School All Male H Public Jr. High/Middle School All Male H Public High School COED H Public Jr. High/Middle School COED COED ill only apply to public schools that contain 25% or more male performers ho are school certified full-time members of the dance team. All other public school teams containing less than 25% male certified members should register as a regular jr. high school/middle school or (by team size) as a small, medium, large, or super team for high school. COED and ALL MALE public junior high/middle school and high school teams ill not be subject to team size guidelines. Since Junior High & High School overlap the freshman year, 9th grade students may compete in either of these to divisions. All Star/Studio Dance Teams grade level of the oldest team member determines their competitive division. Neither team size nor gender ill apply to this classification. The folloing system ill apply: Pre K - Kindergarten Grades 1-3 Grades 4-6 Grades 7-9 Grades 9-12 HS Grad+ (group includes at least one HS Graduate) Officer Lines ill use the same division as their team. To qualify for a Seepstakes Aard at a Regional or Classic, the same set of officers must participate in each routine entry. DANCE TEAM CLASSIFICATION HS Elite features the premiere performers in a separate division against other HS Elite teams. HS Elite squads may enter as many team routines as they ish and are eligible for all aards given at a Regional or Classic. HS Elite groups ill be in competition ith one another regardless of school or team size. Elite teams may not be composed entirely of officers, but they may participate as part of the team. HS Elite teams must be members in size. DANCE REGISTRATION INFORMATION Please complete the Regional & Classic Competition Registration Form enclosed and mail or fax it to our Plano Office to be received at least 14 days prior to the contest date. You may also register for competition on line at.madance.com. For the convenience of scheduling, please register as early as possible even if you do not kno the specific names of your soloists or ensembles. You must submit your solo and ensemble names and grade levels 14 days before the competition you are attending. Late entries must call to confirm space availability and each late entry ill be charged an additional $25 for each routine entered. Confirmation packets & contest schedules ill be ed one eek prior to the competition. MA ill post a preliminary schedule on our ebsite the eekend before each event ith a final update on the Wednesday evening prior to the contest. DANCE COMPETITION ENTRY FEES Regional and Classic Championship fees are detailed in charts on pages 1-2. These must be consulted to fill out the Regional/Classic Registration Form. REFUND POLICY Refunds must be requested in riting and received in our office at least 14 days prior to competition date. Phone calls are not acceptable. Teams, officers, ensembles, and individuals that cancel entries after that time ill not receive any refund! All entry fees must be paid by the date of the competition or performers may not be alloed to participate in the contest! DANCE TEAM ROUTINE GUIDELINES 1. Including set up/entrances/breakdon/exits, teams have a total of 5 minutes of floor time per routine in Jazz, Hip Hop, Military, High Kick, Pom, Lyrical, Modern, Novelty, Specialty, and Open. Prop routines ill be given 6 total minutes and Sho Production ill be allotted 12 total minutes. Entrances and exits are not judged. You may petition for additional time if needed, but only in ONE category per team! 2. Total routine time ith set-up and breakdon of props and backdrops should not exceed time limits itemized above. A one point penalty per judge per minute ill be assessed for exceeding routine time limits. 3. Music must be recorded on compact discs. Variable speed CD players ill be available in all areas. Bring back up CDs to avoid technical problems. 4. Performance area is 96 x 50. (Regulation basketball court) 5. All props and backdrops should be taped to avoid damage to ooden floors, and should be constructed to fit through a gymnasium 7 double door ith center cross bar removed. ALL PROPS MUST BE APPROVED BY THE HOST SCHOOLS PRIOR TO PERFORMANCE! 6. Sho Production should interpret a theme through the combination of various elements of dance. Highest scoring performances ill be aarded separate 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place Trophies. Sho Production may also count as 1 routine toards a possible Seepstakes Trophy. DANCE ENSEMBLE GUIDELINES 1. Duets, Trios, Quartets, & Large Ensembles (5 or more may compete). 2. Divisions are for grades Pre K-Kindergarten, 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 9-12, and HS Grad+ in all ensemble categories. Age Division for any ensemble is determined by the oldest performer. 3. Ensemble routines should be 1 minute and 30 seconds to 2 minutes and 30 seconds. 4. Three oral critiques and score sheets ill be given for each ensemble. OUTSTANDING DANCER GUIDELINES 1. Seven grade divisions ill be offered: PreK-K, 1-3, 4-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, and HS Grad+. 2. Score sheets indicating the numeric scores for each caption ill accompany the critiques. Note: At all M.A. Dance Competitions, judges ill be encouraged to deduct points in the appearance and choreography captions if appropriate costuming, movement, and/or music is not utilized in all routine performances. REGIONAL & CLASSIC AWARDS H Superior Trophies for all Division I rated team & officer routines. H Seepstakes Trophies for teams & officers entering at least 3 eligible routines and receiving a superior on all 3. H Super Seepstakes Trophies for teams & officers receiving a 90 or more by all judges on at least 3 routines entered. H Best in Class Aards for teams and officers ith the highest overall score in their division. At least 3 eligible routines must be entered to qualify. H High Point Plaques for all contest categories. The high and lo scores ill be eliminated and the other three ill be utilized to determine each team s total score. Three (3) judges ill be used in the other divisions of Officer Lines, Dance Ensembles, and Dance Solo Events. Every judge ill provide both a digital audio critique and score sheet for all routines. Team routines should be from 2 minutes and 30 seconds to 3 minutes in length. Ensembles should not exceed 2 minutes and 30 seconds in length. 2. Solo routines should be limited to 2 minutes & not exceed 2 minutes and 15 seconds in length. 3. Winter Guard Productions may be up to 10 minutes in length, hich includes set up & break don. 4. Music must be recorded on compact discs. Bring back up music in case technical difficulties arise. 5. Facilities for Team Auxiliary Performances ill be on a gymnasium floor hich measures 96 x 50. Solos & ensembles may be held in a smaller gym, ballroom, or stage. Hoever, ceilings ill be tall enough to avoid any performance problems. Professional judges ill provide digital audio critiques for all team, ensemble, and solo performances. At Nationals, Team routines ill also receive a video of their performance ith audio judging critiques. Note: Small ensembles for color guards and tirlers consist of 2-4 performers only.
