5 Resident of the Month Sally Markey Sally Markey was born Sally Smith. She was born in the former Fairbury Clinic above First National Bank in Fairbury. She was raised by her grandparents, Joseph and Anna Smith, who lived at 1223 Maple St. in a home which had been in the family since Sally attended school until the 10th grade. Sally has seven children. She and her first husband, Fred Tripilet, had Patricia, Freddie and Eugene. She and her second husband, John Markey, had four children: Deb, John Richard (Rick), Wade and Lawrence. Lawrence has recently moved back to this area from California. Her son Eugene died of a heart attack in Sally was a homemaker and volunteer at Blue Valley Community Action and Head Start, and still helps the First Baptist Church by making phone calls for birthdays and anniversaries. She enjoys crafts such as plastic canvas, and enjoys old country music by Hank Williams and Johnny Cash. Sally has 21 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. Gardenside salutes Sally Markey, our resident of the month. Sally Markey holds her Bible. Entertainment galore Left, staff member Suzanne Longoria dances with entertainer Paul Ramp. 6 By Barb Schwisow, Activities Eclipse Brings Excitement for Residents, Staff With summer coming to an end, fall is in the air. The mornings are crisp and cool. Children are back in school thinking where did the summer go? The solar eclipse of 2017 brought much excitement to Gardenside residents. Leading up to the date, a lot of residents didn t show much interest, but as the day got closer more curiosity came, and residents thought it would be cool to be see the totality. We had a few residents remembering other eclipses in the past. Rain fell intermittently a few times during the morning, and we thought we might not get to view it because of too many clouds. As the time for the total eclipse neared, clouds started to move out. Staff assisted residents out to the west parking lot. Now was the busy time, trying to help residents to get their glasses to stay on to view the partial eclipse as it moved to the total eclipse. We punched holes in the ends of some glasses and inserted ribbons, allowing them to be tied around the back of the residents heads. Protecting our residents eyes was a prime concern. It worked out well! Residents and staff viewed the various stages from partial to total eclipse. The temperatures dropped and finally the total eclipse was there to view. Cheers came! What an extraordinary event to witness! Residents celebrating birthdays for the month were Nina Lugenbeel, Eugene Musil and Beth Weiner. Music was provided by the Happy Czechs. Delicious marble cake and ice cream were served. Gardenside residents had the honor of hearing Addi Hejl play her accordion. She is 14 years old and plays the accordion by ear. She knows more than 40 polkas and waltzes. We wish her the best with her music! Love that zucchini! Once again zucchini seems to be in abundance. Residents were treated to a zucchini party. Zucchini decorated the tables, and nutrition services provided two wonderful tasting zucchini treats. On a cool morning, a group of Gardenside residents boarded the bus. We took a scenic drive along the river road, viewing some of the trees changing color, big cottonwood trees, crops and a flock of sheep. Next we drove to Daykin, stopping at the Bed and Breakfast homes. Barb told the residents about one of the homes, which had the same floor plan as her home. Beautiful flowers surround the homes, and the ladies ooed (Continued on page 7) Page 6
7 Eclipse and more in August (Continued from page 6) and ahhed about the flowers. Next we traveled down the street to pay a visit to former resident Gladys Ebke. As she stepped onto the bus, everyone greeted her. We visited and everyone wished her the best of luck back at home. One evening, members of the Fairbury High School Girls Softball team came out to share their enthusiasm for softball and show their summer trophies won by Fairbury Elite 18 and under and Fairbury Husker Rehab 14 and under, and about their trips to national tournaments in Wisconsin and Arkansas. The residents enjoyed hearing about the girls experiences and the high school softball season coming up. We also had music this month by the Trinity Lutheran Ladies of Jansen, the Old Rusty Minstrel and the 4- S s. We always appreciate those who are willing to share their musical talents! Hope everyone enjoys what is left of summer! Top left, Norma Bernasek snapping green beans. Bottom left, Depke Andres holding staff member Bobbi Ortgies newborn daughter.
