The Fox Valley Aero Club February 2006 February 2006 Club President Club Secretary Jeff Anderson Julian Pugh Club Vice President Club Treasurer Paul Douds Bill Simmons Editor: Paul Jacobs AMA Charter 252 AMA Charter 252 Aerobatics make the world go round. Extreme Aerobatic Club returns to FVAC on July 13-16, 2006
President s Message By Jeff Anderson Points, Points, Points!!! The participation at club events by all the members has been a concern of club presidents since the AMA has been around. The club to our south, Propmasters, has been successfully using a point system for years to encourage more active involvement at club events. I ve taken these ideas and modified them for our clubs use and will present the idea of adopting this concept to the board at our next meeting. I will have more information for you at the February 9, 2006 general meeting but you can read the points program on page 3 of the Flypaper. Another subject that came up at our last general meeting was that of flight instruction. Again, instead of reinventing the wheel, a modified version of Propmasters instruction program will be presented to the board for adoption by our club and you can read it on page 4 of this edition. The idea here is to standardize the instruction and get some help for Dan Compton who has done all the instruction for the past few years himself. Remember that February 9 is also the deadline for renewing your membership dues for 2006 so be sure to attend the meeting and bring your check. February is also the month of our first big event and that is the Swap on the 25th at the Kane County Fairgrounds. The club table at this event is a good fundraiser for the club so be sure to clean out your shop and bring the items to the February meeting. Steve Baker has asked if you can help at the event please be there at 7:00 AM for set-up. Paul Douds has volunteered to pick up items from you if necessary so just call him at Until next month, remember to always be part of the solution...not part of the problem! Jeff 2

Vice President s Report By Paul Douds What makes a club great? The answer EASY WAYS! E A S Y W A Y is for enthusiasm. Do you have a positive mental attitude? Are you always "moaning" about something or somebody? Do you look at glass of water that half full or half empty? is attitude. Are you always "up?" How do others view you and your attitude? Do you have a tendency to be negative? Are you always positive? When you see a strange face at our meeting...do you welcome them and extend your hand for a handshake? When you see a stranger sitting in the bleachers...do you go over to them a welcome them to our field? is for the satisfaction of doing things for others. Do you help check out a "newby's" new airplane? Do you help at the field? At the shows? At the fun flys? is for "you"! Do you attend meetings? Are you on time for the meetings? Do you help cook the hotdogs and hamburgers? is for WORK! A club our size...close to is only as good as its members. Members getting along with members! The field would never have been built if it was not for WORK! is for availability! How available are you at fun flys, shows, etc. I realize that you may still be working but we need you to be available, especially at shows. is for you again! Welcome new people to the club. S is for (again) the satisfaction you get out of helping new or old members. Some members marvel at the way I know members first and last names? I kid and say I took that Harry Carnegie course...no it was Dale. Seriously -- I make an effort to know members and their spouse. When I see someone flying and I recognize their face but not their name...i go to the frequency box and look at their name on the AMA card. I make an effort. A club is only as good as its member's trying to use the EASY WAYS. Paul Douds 5
Secretary s Report By Julian Pugh Minutes of the January 12, 2006 Meeting President Jeff Anderson called the meeting to order at 7:35 P.M. Jeff presented members with the new labeled bottled water with all 2006 events on the label. Thanks Dominic! Jeff also reported on the Toys for Tots contribution made by FVAC members. These were presented to the Salvation Army with the help of St. Charles Mayor Don Dewitt. The mayor was extremely pleased with the FVAC donation to Toys for Tots. Jeff also discussed an idea for a point system for club members, with an auction at the end of the year where members would use the points to purchase auction items. Points would be awarded to members for participation in club events (i.e. meetings, fun fly, field events, etc.). This was received very well by the attending membership. Good Idea Mr. President! Secretary Julian Pugh requested the minutes as published in the November newsletter be approved. A motion was presented and members approved the minutes. Treasurer Bill Simmons presented the Treasurers report to the club. It was approved by vote of the members. He reported a balance of $8, in the club treasury, after payment of outstanding bills. The outstanding bill to Aurora Blacktop has been paid in full. One ball was drawn from the field raffle jar. The ball belonged to Leroy Retzlaff. Safety Chairman Karl Griesbaum advised that a good turnout was experienced for the January 1, 2006 fun fly. He requested All Season Flyers see him after the meeting, so he can finalize submission of the necessary information to the AMA. Membership Chairman Jason reported that approximately 50% of our members have submitted their dues for He also reminded us that if dues are not paid by the February General Club Meeting on February 9, 2006, the member will be required to rejoin the club and pay the $300 field fee. Please get your dues paid. Swap Meet Chairmen Steve Baker and Julian Pugh reported on the Swap Meet which will be held February 25, 2006 at the Kane County Fairground. This is a larger site, with better parking and less expensive. Letters have been mailed to all clubs and hobby stores in the area. Several tables have already been reserved. Please remember to call Paul Douds and give him your donations for the club table. This is our big money maker and we need your contributions... Flypaper Editor Paul Jacobs requested that articles be submitted by the 20 th of each month, so the Flypaper can be published in a timely manner. He would like to see more articles for the paper. Fun Fly Chairman Alan Galle reported that Dominic Saverino was the first flyer in the air on New Years Day. The next Fun Fly will be held in May. An Open Combat event has been scheduled for 6/4/ Chief Instructor Dan Compton needs more instructors. Please contact Dan if you have interest in being a Flight Instructor. Tom Dinsmore was welcomed as a new member. He lives in Naperville and is a member of Prop Masters Aero Club. Will Walters of Oswego was introduced as a guest and indicates he will be joining the club. Joseph Bassett of Sycamore was present as a guest and will be joining the FVAC. Bob Bowen of Oakbrook was present as a guest and will be joining the FVAC. Welcome Tom, Will, Joseph and Bob!! New planes were shown by the following members: Dave Murray Skymaster Jet painted by Dave Brussel Jeff Anderson E-Flight Electric YAK Bob Bowen A very nice model stand made from PVC pipe Dominic Saverino Electric Helicopter Bill Simmons Foamy Raptor (EP) Dave Murray Two old wooden props from WW-I Vintage Planes President Anderson adjourned the meeting 9:31 P.M. 6
Treasurers Report By Bill Simmons Hey we made it thru another year. Its January, 50 degrees outside, and I m stuck at work. Last weekend I went to Waukesha Expo Center with Allan Galle. This is one of the best swap meets within two hours driving distance of our field. If you weren t there you really missed something. Allan and I filled my car up with so many things that we bought there that we were both concerned about the wives seeing us bringing the stuff to our respective basements. I m thinking about going to Toledo this year. Once again, let me know if you are interested and we can caravan down there as a group. At the end of February, We will be having our own swap meet. Historically this has been a major money maker for us. We sell coffee and donuts and a have a small entrance fee to get in. We also charge for the use of tables but it is the club table that brings in the bucks. Look around your shop. Do you have any old servos, radios, kits, or reparable airplanes (even non reparable airplanes) that you don t see yourself ever doing anything with? Wouldn t you rather have the storage space for new stuff? Bring it to the next meeting and donate it to the club table. We hope to pay off a couple of members balls with the proceeds. When everyone is paid off we can start thinking about building a club house and control tower and any other crazy idea we come with. In keeping with my theme from last month I wanted to spotlight some stuff you should have in your shop. Harry Higley Products Film Trimmer I have a few Higley products and this is the one I use most. It is easy to use and makes a nice tight seam on long strait stretches of Monokote as well as other covering materials. I met him at lunch last weekend in Wisconsin. Much of his products can be purchased in your favorite hobby shop. He also does mail order and is usually at the local swap meets. Look for the Yellow bound books that he wrote covering the hows and whys of radios, engines and electrics. Also check out his web site for other products that he sells. I have several of his heavy hubs and some of his extra long drill bits. All very well made and reasonably priced. And no, he didn t buy me lunch. 7
Treasurers Report By Bill Simmons E-Flite Yak 54F 3D EP ARF and E-Flite Ultimate Fx 3D ARF before he let people like me fly it. This is what Jeff s electric looked like This is the plane that chewed up Jeff s elevator without even slowing down. It is very strong and very aerobat. These planes practically fall out of the box looking like this. They look great and are amongst the best flying airplanes at the Dome. E-flight produces several other great flying models but these are the two I like best. Both will fly well out doors as well, assuming you put a strong enough motor in them. I would recommend using Hacker motors as they are very well made, efficient, very powerful. Their out runner will give you better than a two to one power to weight ratio. All of these kits are available at our supporting hobby stores and I would recommend that you purchase them there. The added level of service and help with choosing servos, control arms, etc. is more than worth the few pennies you might save thru mail order. Until 8

Safety Corner By Karl Griesbaum This months subject deals with the topic of spinning propellers and they say one picture is worth a thousand words so on the next page there is quite a story. I caution you that they are a bit graphic but I am trying to get a point across that it s not just our fingers that need attention. A brief moment of carelessness at the field could ruin your whole day. Particular attention should be given to electric motor driven props as they can instantly go from a stopped position to 10,000 RPM by bumping the throttle
Safety Corner By Karl Griesbaum We don t want to see any of our members posing for pictures like this so let s make 2006 the safest year ever at the field. 15
