4 Our PD/H/PE Faculty awards were given out to six students this week who showed commitment and effort in theory and practical classes. Congratulations to these worthy recipients. Four students were awarded Deputy Principals Awards at this week s assembly. Congratulations to Ricco, Ben, Jacob and Stacy! These awards are only given when students have earned enough VIVO s to receive a number of Year Advisor awards. What is especially impressive is Year 7 students receiving such a prestigious award so early in their high school careers, a privilege normally more commonly awarded in older year groups, so extra Well Done to Ricco and Ben. 5 Miss Talidu's 'Artist of the week' award was a tie! Two of her Year 7 students both share the title. Hannah (pictured) has consistently displayed great skill and care with her art making, particularly when she's painting. Hannah always does her best. The other Yr7 'Artist of the week' is Justin (not pictured) who contributes positively and with insight when discussing art history. He has a flair for art theory and enjoys discussing and writing about the meanings behind art works. Congrats to both students! Some of our talented music students attended a rehearsal on Friday for the upcoming celebration of the 200th anniversary of St Matthews Anglican Church Windsor. The celebratory service will be held on the 11th of October. Waki Devantier and Ricco Waikiri - Paul will be featured as soloists at this event. Windsor High School Page 5 Week 10 Term

6 They were blindfolded and then had to taste some authentic Viking dishes. This was followed by the Grand Finals where the top teams had to exhibit skill in cooperation to master the wooden ski plank challenge. Congratulations to the Yellow Viking Clan from 8S who were the winners on the day. A fantastic time was had by all and a huge thank you goes out to all of our amazing Year 10 Peer Support Leaders who did a great job running the events at each station. 9 On behalf of the students in Years 7 to 11, and the staff of Windsor high I would like to acknowledge our Year 12 students who will be fare welled tomorrow at their Graduation Assembly. As we all come to the end of our journey together, for both the students as a year group and the teacher /student connections, it is naturally tinged with sadness as we start to say our goodbyes. It was the author A.A.Milne through the character of Winnie the Pooh who stated How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard. We will miss you all Year 12- thank you for making saying goodbye to you all so hard. So as you can see Windsor High continues to be a very busy place with amazing opportunities for all our students. 10 RFS Cadets Windsor High School s RFS Cadets are coming towards the end of their program. For the past twenty weeks twelve students have been participating in training as Rural Firefighters along with familiarisation of emergency services in the Hawkesbury. They have also competed as a team in the Hawkesbury District RFS Field Day. Over the duration of this program they have learnt to roll and bowl canvas fire hoses, pump water with a variety of pumps, work safely around fire trucks, use radio communications, basic first aid awareness including CPR and defibrillation, fire behaviour and finally this week they will learn how to use fire extinguishers on live fire. They have also visited Hawkesbury RFS Fire Control, RFS Fire Stations, NSW Fire and Rescue at Windsor, HAZMAT and the SES Headquarters where they inspected flood boats and a variety of rescue equipment. This program has been fully supported by NSW RFS providing uniforms and equipment, Hawkesbury RFS providing transport plus additional resources and volunteer fire fighters from across the Hawkesbury assisting with training and providing fire trucks. This program has been organised and promoted by Group Captain Phil Hurst who has been tireless in his efforts to ensure the success of this program. Finally a big thankyou to our two regular trainers, Senior Deputy Captain Peter Jones from Kurrajong Brigade and Volunteer Firefighter Cathy Jones from Colo Heights Brigade. These two trainers volunteered their time each Wednesday to ensure Windsor High School s students received the best possible experience. This program has helped develop student s awareness about the huge efforts that volunteers in the Hawkesbury community commit to each week to ensure the safety of residents in the district. Not just from bush fires, floods and car crashes but also from the day to day emergencies that our community face, even getting cats out of trees. Hopefully, all of these students will have developed their skills and knowledge that will benefit them into the future especially as we approach what looks like being a high danger fire period. 14 May the best Viking Clan win. - The Survivor Viking Day Challenge! Station 1 had three challenges based on Viking Ships, including designing their own model ship and then using tennis balls to sink the vessels of other clans. On Friday all Year 8 students participated in an activity day run by the HSIE Faculty as the final event in our study of the Viking World this term. Survivor Windsor Viking World Challenge involved each class being divided up into teams, called Viking Clans. Each clan wore their buffs which showed their Viking colours and participants worked their way around 4 stations on the back oval to earn points for their clan. When they arrived at each Station, students had to answer 6 quiz questions based on the theme at this area, then they had to complete three different challenges that tested their strength, coordination, speed or ability to work as part of a team. Station 2 was based on Viking Weapons, where teams had to master the skill of the Catapult and also the Viking Shield Frisbee-Toss. Windsor High School Page 14 Week 10 Term

15 Station 3 took clans through their paces in preparing the skills needed for a Viking Raid. There was an Obstacle Course that tested their speed and a River-Crossing event that required them to work as a team and use their problem solving skills. And finally Station 4 was about Viking Life where one student was the model and teams had to construct a Viking Outfit and weapon out of nothing but newspaper and tape, with some very interesting fashions produced by each clan! 16 The highlight of the day was the Semi Finals, where brave students from each clan could volunteer to participate in the Cast Iron Stomach Viking taste-testing event. Students were blindfolded and had to guess from a series of multiple choice options what the unique Viking dish that they had just tasted actually was. Lingon-berry jam on a Viking fritter proved to be a crowd favourite, whilst smoked anchovy on a Viking cracker and the famous Viking Green Stew were less popular with the contestants! 17 The Grand Finals saw the top 6 Viking Clans battle it out on the Wooden-plank Ski Challenge. The competition was very close, with the Red Team from 8A almost taking out the challenge, but the Yellow Team from 8S shone through and won the title of Ultimate Viking Clan for 2017! Congratulations to Year 8 who were outstanding participants on the day! (see The Windsor High Facebook page for more photos and a video of the Grand Finals from this fantastic day). Windsor High School is holding homework help sessions in the school library. Staff will be available to help with revision or completing homework and assessment tasks. You can also use the computers to complete school work and research. Homework Help sessions can also be used to get up to date in each of your classes if you have outstanding classwork or assessments.
