1 Excellence Confidence Enriched Nurtured Happy Christ Church CE Primary Newsletter 24: 23rd March 2018 Message from Mrs Jones: Happy Easter everyone! Thank you for a most enjoyable term which has seen us squeeze an amazing about of fun and learning into the last 5 weeks. It was a chilly walk to Church yesterday for our Easter Service but the Easter bonnets cheered up the grey skies. The children shone with their singing and our Year 6 narrators ensured we all heard the story of Easter. Our new favourite song is Lean On Me and we reflected on the importance of being there for each other when we need someone. Lean on me, when you're not strong And I'll be your friend I'll help you carry on For it won't be long 'Til I'm gonna need Somebody to lean on Pastor Ruthy prompted us to reflect upon our thoughts about our theme of Peace and encouraged us to find some Peace for ourselves and those close to us this Easter. Collective Worship Council read the prayers they had written. Learning together- the children have been very proud sharing their homework projects this week. It is always so impressive to see the creative ways in which the same task is completed. We wish Mrs Rebecca Rowe well as she starts her maternity leave. We will welcome Miss Rebecca Bradley at the start of term 5 whose first activity will be Year 5 camp. Miss Hinwood will be leaving us on 30th April to enjoy her wedding celebrations. Miss Charlotte Burley will join us at the start of term 5 and will take over as teacher of 1ZH when Miss Hinwood leaves. Mathletics A letter and log in password came home via book bags yesterday in order for you (and your children) to start exploring Mathletics. Mathletics has been used successfully in many schools as a platform to support with the acquisition and reinforcement of Number skills. Over terms 5 and 6 the teachers will also be exploring its use as a means of providing homework tasks. We will be holding some drop in sessions in term 6 to ask and answer questions and to invite your feedback.

4 Year 6 WW2 Project WW2 Project homework: Year 6 have had a great time preparing their homework projects for the end of their WW2 projects. They researched and presented areas as diverse as: fashion, food and rationing, the Bristol Blitz, evacuation and several important battles. They presented their homework to each other in the hall and then our reading buddies in Year 1 were invited up to share in the learning.

5 Year 6 WW2 Day WW2 Day: There was a jubilant atmosphere in year 6 (not only because we re nearing the end of term!) as on Wednesday we were transported back to the 8th of May 1945 to celebrate the end of the war VE day! We had lots of fun throughout the day culminating in an extraordinary afternoon. First we had two fantastic swing dance teachers who taught us to throw some shapes, 1940s style hopefully you can check these out on the website soon. Our day ended with a wonderful street party and feast where we continued the dancing. We would like to thank our parent helper for the day and all parents for their help with the amazing costumes.

6 Year 4 Roman Day Salve! A legion of Roman centurions, gladiators, gods, goddesses and Emperors greeted us on Wednesday as we opened the doors to Roman Day. We started the day with Roman games and songs, and then shared our Roman homework projects that we have been working so hard on this term. We were treated to some spectacular creations, from a loaf of bread made with a 2000 year old Roman recipe to a drone bird s eye view of a Roman site in Dorchester. In the afternoon, we practised our Roman marching and charging skills, and then ended the day with a Roman feast, yes including rotten fish guts! (this was not the most popular dish!) A great day was had all round, what a way to end the term and our Roman topic!

7 French Clothing Design In French, Year 1 and 2 have been learning items of clothing with a song called Promenons nous dans les bois. It is about children going for a walk in the woods while the wolf is getting dressed before he comes to get them! They have been designing clothes for the wolf. Yr 3 French Quiz and Egg Hunt On Wednesday 21st March, the Year 3 have done a French quiz outside and a chocolate Easter egg hunt. They had a great time testing their learning and eating chocolate. Year 4 Animation

8 Yr 3 Steel Pans Over the last two terms Year 3 have been lucky enough to have the opportunity to learn the steel pans. This week our learning culminated in a concert to showcase the songs the children can now play! Sunshine was brought into the hall with songs, Jamming, Oh Happy Day and Three Little Birds. The children have made fantastic progress and sounded amazing! A huge thank you goes to our teacher, Alphonse and a massive well done to all of Year 3! Yr 1 & 2 Easter Bonnet Parade All the children looked fantastic in their Easter bonnets as they strutted and twirled around the playground to show off every angle. No bonnets were the same, all very individual and the children had obviously loved creating them. Thank you to all at home who helped too.

9 Reception Yoga On Tuesday the reception children were lucky enough to have a yoga taster session with Carolyn. They enjoyed learning about different yoga poses and to be calm and still as part of the relaxation time. The children listened beautifully and really demonstrated excellent concentration, listening and balance! They are looking forward to the opportunity to continue this learning as they have weekly yoga sessions with Carolyn in Term 5 and Term 6. Reception Cooking Reception have been learning about Easter and new life this week. On Tuesday they used their reading skills to follow a set of instructions to make Easter nests. They watched carefully as we melted the chocolate over water. They learnt about how the solid chocolate changed to a liquid once it was heated. They really enjoyed making their nests and we were told they tasted delicious as well! KS2 Netball at Clifton High School

10 Choccolottery Thank you so much to everyone for your amazing donations to the Choccolottery large eggs were won in an afternoon of great choccolottery excitement, with everyone taking home either a large or small egg to enjoy for Easter. The sale of the choccolottery tickets raised a fabulous 490 for the foodbank, maybe for those less fortunate than ourselves to enjoy some good eating at Easter time. Thank you. We had some fabulous entries in the Decorate an Egg competition, Jessica Whitwell taking away the top prize for her original and creative work. Sport Relief 2018, Friday 23rd March After a very energetic warm up in the hall (Mr Ashcroft warming up the AiP Smoothie Bike), Mr Campbell and our fantastic Sports captains led RRP and RVG around the school an amazing 7 laps!! Reception truly are the Duracell bunnies of the school showing great determination and stamina. Throughout the day Yrs 1&2, 3&4 and finally 5&6 stretched out their legs and ran their socks off for Sports Relief - we beat our target of a combined distance of 1000km - as far as here to the Alps! Thank you to all those who made the great run happen, especially to the Year 6 sports captains.

11 Year 5 created some fun P.E games for Reception to test out this week. It was brilliant to see the older pupils supporting the wee ones so beautifully.

12 Invitations Clifton College Choir Concert! Year 5 and KS2 choir Christ Church Choir and Clifton College choir are teaming up for another year in the summer term to sing a fantastic concert full of rousing pop songs. New date - Thursday 19th April, 7.30pm at School PTA News Thanks to all those who attended the PTA quiz night last Friday. Despite some fiendishly difficult questions the evening was a great success. This year it was the turn of the Reception parents (The Newbies) to lift the winner's bottle of champagne, beating the Curry Dad's by a small margin by building a magnificent free-standing tower in the final round. Please look out next term for information on the next PTA event - the Race/ auction night. Then it will be time for the Summer Fayre again...
