1 Walter Evans News May 2015 Fri 22nd May Break up for half term Mon 1st June Back to school POPUK in school all week. 15th June, 6pm POPUK Concert Friday 19th June INSET Day Fri 26th June Summer Fair 5.30pm til 8pm Wed 1st July Sports Day Years 1 to 6 Wed 8th July Sports Day Rec / Nursery Sat 18th July Summer Ball Have a lovely half term break FOUNDATION STAGE How quickly this half term has gone! We managed to avoid the rain and enjoy a great day out at Twycross Zoo. The highlight seemed to be the double decker bus for some of us! Thank you for your support on the walk for Mrs Beasley. We saw lots of happy faces either walking, scooting or travelling by other means round Carsington. Next half term s topic will focus on water and we are looking forward to a full few weeks before our children move on to Year 1. Please join us where you can for the events that will be taking place. YEAR 1/2 Over the last few weeks we have been investigating the best materials to keep our Teddy bears waterproof. All the children enjoyed the experimenting although the classrooms got very wet. We have been reading about Traction man. The children created their own cartoon strips. Mr Morris got to be the heroic Traction man in our drama while Mrs Dobson became his evil arch enemy. Who knew Mrs Dobson kept children in cages? Luckily Traction man was there to save the day! YEAR 3/4 In Y3/4 we have continued our Stone Age topic and have now built caves in our classrooms using our knowledge of structures and measuring 22nd May 15 skills. We are also in the process of designing 'Cave art' for the caves to make them a little more homely!!! YEAR 5/6 Congratulations to Year 6 on completing their SAT s. Staff were very impressed with their attitude and hard work during SAT s week. We have also been learning all about Volcanoes and Earthquakes and exploring evolution and anilmal adaptations. A busy half term!! MUSIC CD RECORDING AND CONCERT POP UK will be in school w/c 1st June 2015 teaching your children some wonderful songs that will be recorded onto a CD on Friday 5th June They will then perform at a live concert on Monday 15th June 2015 at the Riverside Centre on Pride Park. Tickets for the concert will go on sale on Monday 1st June 2015 priced at 5 per adult and 3 per concession. Children 5 and under are free. There will be a licensed bar at the event and plenty of parking (free for the first 150 cars - after that there will be a 1 charge for the venue s overspill carpark). You will also be able to purchase a copy of the CD at the event priced at just Reception class families are welcome to come along to the concert too. It should be a fabulous evening of music performed by your children, we hope you can join us. For more info, contact the school office. If you would like tickets, please send payment in a named envelope to the office stating number of tickets required week commencing 1st June Thank you.

2 All welcome in our new Prayer Space.. Prayer Space & Chaplaincy We have a new superb prayer space, which enables the school community to explore the big questions of life and faith. It is inclusive and accessible to people of all faiths and none. The children are using the space and we would like to extend the opportunity to the wider school community. The prayer space will be available to parents, grandparents and carers for ½ hour after school each day. We also hold a prayer meeting twice a month which is led, by parents & grandparents. These are held at the following times: 1 st Monday of the month pm 3 rd Wednesday of the month pm We have also just launched chaplaincy provision within the school through Sandra Hinds (pictured below) who is part of the citywide chaplaincy team. Chaplains are not just here to discuss the deep issues but are also there to be a listening ear for anything you may wish to chat with them about. Please speak to Sandra directly or pick up a contact card from reception if you would like to chat with her. Helen Munday (TA) & Sarah Watson (Governor)

3 SPORTING ROUNDUP Basketball Competition Walter Evans entered a team into the basketball competition, run by The Ecclesbourne School for their feeder schools. Despite only having had a couple of training sessions, the boys and girls who took part were able to adapt some of the games skills they had acquired during our PE sessions on handball and from our after school netball club. Over the course of the evening, the team went from strength to strength and finished second in the competition. Well done everyone involved. Derby School Sport s Kwik Cricket Competition Two teams were entered into the year 5/6 Derby City School Sports Kwik Cricket competition, held at Spondon this week. The competition has qualifying rounds, held at three different venues and the standard of cricket from a number of schools is very high. Despite the uncricket-like weather (cold winds, torrential showers and some sunshine), Walter Evans kwik cricketing teams were still able to put on a show of excellent bowling, brilliant batting and fantastic fielding. As a result, one of our teams won all their games and has made it through to the Derby City Finals, which will be held in June. Well done to all the boys who took part and good luck to those who will be in the finals. The girls kwik cricket competition will be held on Tuesday 9 th June. Darley Abbey Cricket Club and Cricket Coaching in School Over the last five or six years, Walter Evans has been developing strong links with Darley Abbey Cricket Club and we have had cricket coaches in school during the summer term, funded by the Chance2Shine charity. During the next half term, we will be having a cricket coach in school on a Monday afternoon, who will be coaching Mrs Ravenscroft s year 3/4 class and Mr Cripwell s Year 5/6 class. There will also be an after-school club for year 5/6 pupils. Our close links with Darley Abbey Cricket Club and provision of coaching, has seen standards of cricket improve and seen our school teams go from having one or two players linked to the club, to three quarters of the teams having a link. If your child is interested in playing cricket outside of school, Darley Abbey Cricket Club provides sessions for girls and boys who are 6 and over on a Saturday morning, between 10pm and 12 noon. Please see Mrs Williams, if you require any further information.

4 Year 3/4 Inter-house Football Competiton Match Report written by Harry Tallis and Fred Perrott Last Friday (15 th of May) the final of the year 3/4 inter-house football competition took place on the top field, between Dragons and Phoenix. The first half was quiet, with little action, except for attempts at scoring and brilliant saves by both keepers (Oliver Clark and Daniel Mann). Shortly after the second half began, Sid Perrott, for Dragons, hit a wonderful volley which hit the cross bar and bounced off and over the net. On the next attack, Hugo Harvey (a player for Dragons) was brought down in the penalty area and Dragons were given a penalty. Hugo took the penalty and placed it in the bottom right hand corner of the net. Phoenix - from kick-off - charged in to the penalty area and Ollie Taylor took a shot; however this fabulous attempt was saved by Ollie Clark. This led to a Dragons counter attack where Hugo Harvey picked up the ball, ran down the wing and scored. The match ended 2-0 to Dragons and was commentated by Harry Tallis and Fred Chell; refereed by Euan Field. Sid Perrott was Man of the match as a result of his fabulous all-round performance. Staffing Changes Mrs Scorah our wonderful Foundation Stage Leader is leaving us! As you already know, Mrs Scorah is retiring at the end of the school year, after 25 years service at Walter Evans, quite a record! She will be missed by children, staff and parents / carers alike, especially after 15 years as Treasurer for the PTFA, not to mention barmaid!! If you would like to donate towards a leaving gift for Mrs Scorah, please pass it to the school office. We are still busy deciding exactly how to say goodbye Further details will follow. Mrs Scorah s role of Foundation Stage Leader and Reception Class teacher is to be filled by Mrs Claire McCormick from September 2015 who has taught at Ridgeway Infants School for a number of years. Mrs McCormick will be popping into school over the next few weeks to get to know everyone. Also appointed for September 15 will be Miss Domenica Toplis who will be a Year 1 teacher and Miss Rebecca Harvey who will teach Year 3 / 4. They will also both be coming in to meet their new classes next half term.
