1 VOLUME IV - ISSUE I 5th December 2014 PARENT WORKSHOPS Mr Scott-Evans writes: Becket Keys Church of England School prides itself on working closely with parents and sharing the same traditional Christian values that families have at home. To this end, we are in regular communication with parents through the student planners, through s, parents evenings and this weekly newsletter. Parents are also welcome to volunteer (thanks to those who started helping in Art and DT recently) and attend weekly events like our prayer meetings and Friday lunchtime Eucharists. In addition, we regularly hold parent workshops and we have some on Monday which I would strongly recommend to all families. We will look at Character Education, Training the Teenage Brain and Cyber Safety. I know it is a busy time of year, but I would urge as many of you to come to these as possible. With some very serious national crimes and local problems such as: The importance of working together to teach young people about how to stay safe on-line is one of our most pressing priorities. Ms Endicott and I ran sessions this week for Year 9 boys and girls separately and it will be very helpful to follow these up with you. One of the youtube clips we showed is here if you want to take a look: watch?v=vcmtvowlzzq KEEP IN TOUCH In addition, Mr Wray will be sharing some of experiences working at Liverpool Football Club and working with teenagers such as Raheem Sterling. Miss Gill will host a session on how we teach character at school and how we think this makes a difference. Please attend if you can. You can book on-line via the App on our website. You just use the link on the left hand side of the home page to get to the parents evening booking system. Thank you for all your support as parents of our school. Please do keep in touch with us. You can write in your son/daughter s planner or us using staffenquiry@becketkeys.org and simply putting the name of the teacher you want to contact in the subject line. Failing that, give us a call! Unless we are extremely busy our telephones are always answered by a human being! Best regards Andy Scott-Evans Head Teacher VOLUME IV - ISSUE I 5 December 2014 PAGE 1

2 OTHER NEWS MANGA HIGH UK LEADERS - MATHEMATICS Congratulations to all our students for working us into the Number 1 spot for Manga High on the UK British Isles Leaderboard. Every student played their part particularly on the additional INSET day to get us into this fantastic position. CHRISTMAS CHARITY FUND RAISING Next Thursday expect some 'unusual' staff attire. Members of staff have volunteered to wear Christmas garb, ranging from the head teacher s trusty Santa outfit to Star Wars Christmas jumpers (is Mr Hughes Darth Vadar in disguise?) and elf hats and shoes (can Mrs Ahlner conjure up any extra Christmas presents?). And it's all in the name of charity! Students can donate to staff members and if enough money is raised then the outfit will be worn. So, if you have ever wanted to see Miss Gill in a red onesie, or Mrs Rowan in her Christmas minion jumper, or Mr Fenn with a turkey stuck on his head, now is your chance! Teachers, Reception staff and the site team are all willing to look a little 'alternative' for the students amusement. So donate some small change to a few jars and let s make December 11th a day to remember! Look at the posters to see which of your teachers are involved. DONUT SALE There will be a donut sale next Wednesday from 1pm to 1.20pm in the playground. A selection of donuts, including iced and jam donuts will cost 70p each. Remember to bring some spare change! All profits will go towards our two charities for this year: Great Ormond Street and World Vision. TOYS FROM MCDONALDS We are still collecting McDonalds' toys to pass onto a local church which is then taking them over to children in care in Romania. Please remember to donate your unwanted toys. The collection box is in Reception. ST FRANCIS HOSPICE It was with great pleasure that Daisy Benson and Jamie Major represented the charity committee and all the students in the school when they handed a cheque for 1150 to Linda Head from St Francis Hospice. The money was raised last year through the many charity events organised by the committee, and is part of the overall total of 3943 raised during 2013 to VOLUME IV - ISSUE I 5 December 2014 PAGE 2

3 SEVERE WEATHER During the winter months severe weather conditions may make it impossible for students and staff to come to school. These conditions are rare and are unlikely to occur every year and our aim is always to keep the school open, however, our priority must be the safety of our students and staff. When such weather conditions occur we would like parents to be aware of the following routine: The school will post details of a school closure on our website and on our Twitter Feed to alert them to the fact that the school will be closed. In such circumstances, the decision to remain open or closed will also be ed to parents using our database of priority contact details. (Please make sure that these are kept up to date) Parents may be told their children should not to attend at all or that the school will close early. Drivers should not attempt to make the journey to school, if their road conditions are dangerous. Please avoid telephoning the school directly so that lines can be kept free for important outgoing calls. If bad weather continues, every effort will be made to keep the school running to a normal working routine Parents may collect children early from school, but should inform the school, if they are planning to do this. Students may be allowed to use their mobile telephones to contact their parents to keep them informed. School telephones will also be made available for all students on request. Notices will be placed around the school and every effort will be made to contact parents about special arrangements such as the cancelling of after school clubs etc. In the most extreme conditions, parents can be assured that their children will remain in warm, safe and dry conditions until the situation improves. 4 SPORTS NEWS GIRLS FOOTBALL Y7 Brentwood District Tournament. Our Year 7 girls competed in the district tournament this week. We lost our first game against Plume 3 0, however, we won against Chelmer Valley 4 0 which took us through to the semi-final as runners up of our group. We played against Shenfield who won their group in a tense game. Shenfield scored first however, Becket Keys continued to press forward and Isabella managed to score in the left corner of the goal to help the team to get a draw. We then played extra time, but there was no shift in the score, so the game went to penalties. Shenfield took their first penalty and hit the ball over the bar, however the penalty was discounted as our goalkeeper had stepped forward too early. They then took the penalty again and scored. Isabella stepped up to take one but the keeper saved it. Shenfield then scored their second leaving Anna Jackson to try to keep Becket Keys in the game. She took a great penalty sending towards the top left corner, however the keeper dived and got a touch on it meaning that Shenfield went through to the final. Congratulations to the Year 8 girls who beat St John Payne 3-1 in their match this week. Goals were scored by Alice Keeley, Cleo Cooke and Lauren Pamenter. Lily Yates made her debut and Daisy Arundell-Coote (Year 7) stepped in when the team was short and defended excellently! Well done girls a great win! Y9 Girls Football Last week, Becket Keys hosted the Brentwood 5-a-side Girls football tournament. A and B teams from Brentwood Ursuline, St Martin s, and Shenfield attended. This was the girls first football match of the year and unfortunately both A and B teams were unable to gain a win. Hannah McCarthy made some fantastic saves in goal, while Lauren Armstrong, Daisy Mattock and Cara Tait showed determination when trying to attack. Shenfield and St Martin s made it through to the final with Shenfield School winning overall. From the games, it was evident that the girls need to work on their ability to make passes that are accurate and to gain confidence when moving forward with the ball. TABLE TENNIS If there are any budding table tennis players who would like to enter a table tennis tournament, please speak to Mr Fenn next week. GIRLS BASKETBALL Y8 Brentwood Tournament. We took an A and B team to the Brentwood tournament last week playing against Brentwood Country High, St Martin s, Shenfield and Anglo European. Unfortunately due to illness, the B team were a player down which put them at a disadvantage. However Katie, Rebecca and Olivia never gave up and put maximum effort in. Unfortunately, they didn t win any games, however Rebecca did score an excellent far out shot her first ever basket! The A team managed to do better and overall came third in the tournament. Well done girls! Year 9 Girls Basketball The Year 9 team had their first game of the season against Great Baddow High this week. Great Baddow are a strong side and unfortunately our girls were unable to outwit them. Despite some good fast breaks, we were unable to convert all of our shots and Great Baddow were excellent at this. The final score was to Great Baddow. The girls have another game against Brentwood County High this week where hopefully they can create some more attacking chances. Y8 Girls V St John Payne VOLUME IV - ISSUE I 5 December 2014 PAGE 4

5 SPORTS NEWS GIRLS FOOTBALL U13 Colchester Cup Last Friday a squad of 8 students attended the Colchester Cup a tournament where many schools across Essex compete to win and gain a place in a national competition which gives the finalists a chance to play at Wembley! We started the competition in a tough group. Our first game against Moulsham ended in a 1-0 loss, not the ideal start although this team did have players from clubs such as Arsenal Ladies! We pressed and marked well, but a through ball allowed one of their top strikers to fire a goal in. Our next game was against Ramsey. This was our best performance. We had the majority of possession and were attacking for most of the game. Both Anna Jackson and Isabella Connelly had shooting opportunities that went wide, but a goal was coming. A corner kick was swung in and Rebecca Sharp managed to get a touch to hit it low into the corner of the goal to give us a 1-0 lead. There were only a couple of minutes left of the game, yet out of nowhere, Ramsey sent a pass through both our defenders, which resulted in an attacking sprint from the half way line, for all players who were in Ramsey s half of the pitch. Madison tried to come out of goal to take on the player but the shot from Ramsey was sent to the corner of the goal. Resulting in a 1-1 draw. Our final game was against Clacton, again a tough competitor to play against. We tried to focus more on attacking play, as we needed to win our last game to get us through the group. Some great link up passes were made between Anna Jackson and Isabella Connelly, however our final strike did not give us the goal we needed. Grace Middleditch, Rebecca Sharp and Olivia Mullan made some great blocks and tackles, but unfortunately we lost the game 3-0. This was disappointing for the girls but several positives can be taken from this experience. Firstly, it was a great opportunity and after the group stages a friendly game with St Martin s was organised where the girls won 1-0. Secondly, over 30 teams entered this tournament and the final was between Moulsham and Clacton the two teams we had in our initial group of 4! Perhaps if we had started in a different group our girls may have managed to get through to the quarter finals. Well done to all the girls who came along! VOLUME IV - ISSUE I 5 December 2014 PAGE 5
