1 Mrs Sexton s Newsletter March 2018 Coming Up in April:16 th Back to school, Y4A swimming, 18 th - 6pm Year 6 residential info, 20 th Bouldering finals, Y5 Squash, Y6 Yorkshire Wildlife Park, 23 rd -24 th - Y3 Castleton, Y4T swimming, 730pm FODs (Wagon & Horses), 25 th Y4 Network Games, 27 th Y4 Charity day, It has been an extremely busy month with snow, meaning lots of visits and meetings cancelled or postponed. Thank you to everyone for their patience and understanding. Pupil s Parliament & Parking We are receiving many complaints from pupils, parents and carers about inconsiderate parking and speeding. This is getting to be quite a problem- it is dangerous and inconsiderate. Pupil s Parliament have also discussed it and will be writing a letter to all parents in the near future. In the meantime they would like me to share their worries: Dear parents and guardians, it has been brought to our attention by many pupils in school that they don t feel safe on the roads close to school and when crossing the school car park. This is due to inconsiderate parking and dangerous driving. As a result we are starting to collect registration plates given to us and if there is a pattern of repeated number plates we will inform the appropriate bodies responsible. I would also like to request that people show greater respect and consideration towards Mr Strafford in the morning who has a difficult job of redirecting people who are not permitted to enter the car park. Children s University Miss Harper and Ms Brown escorted a number of children to Sheffield Hallam University this month to celebrate and recognise their dedication to extracurricular events and activities. It was a very special occasion and children wore the full cap and gown outfit and were awarded their certificates. A big well done; showing how important it is to have interests and hobbies beyond school. Year 6- Red Cross Workshops These have been a fabulous series of workshops for our year 6 pupils, which have engaged them in thinking about life beyond our school community. In particular they have learnt about stigma and the use of correct language relating to immigration and asylum seeking. They have been engaged in group activities which have challenged their opinions and concepts and learnt about the different push and pull effects of immigration. Year 3 Tag Rugby We are very excited to report that all the year 3 classes are benefitting from a block of tag rugby training this term from the Sheffield Eagles Rugby League Club on Tuesday afternoons. The coaching will also lead to a summer school games tag rugby competition and some children will be selected for this competition in the summer term. We hope that the children will really enjoy experiencing this and it have impact new sporting opportunity will also the positive of up skilling year 3 class teachers in the delivery of tag rugby training. 2 Buon Appetito! Whilst one half of the year group were having fun at the Oakes the other half took part in a brilliant enterprise project organised by the year 4 team- all around the theme of pizza. Children were engaged in various enterprise activities working in small teams. Year 3 Charity Day Year 3 s did a great job of organising their 1 st charity day event and definitely have set the bar high for future years of planning. Stalls included name the teddy, lucky dip and target games- well done year 3 we will reveal the grand totals at the end of April. Year 4 charity day is 27 th April (not March- apologies for any confusion). New Logo Our Uniform Supplier has now produced uniform with the new logo on. Any new uniform ordered will now have this logo on and we will phase out the old logo over time. Eggineering! The STEM Easter Egg competition was brilliant; with many strong entries around the theme of science, engineering, technology and maths- a big well done and thank you to everyone who entered. We certainly enjoyed judging your creations. Winning entries include: Eve F, Gracie H, Eleanor S, Liliana W, Jack D, Toby J, Tom A, Cici Z, Katherine M, Joe H, Dylan W, Amy Y. FODs This year's Easter Egg Hunt was a great success and there were lots of families and children from both schools. Thank you to Christina and team for organising and everyone who donated prizes. FODs have also paid for our new fencing ( 2800) and paid to repair the tyre park ( 300). Premises & Expansion Update Our expansion has begun and we now no longer have use of the library until work is complete. People are using the new exit/entrance to DASH -thank you. Children (& staff) are really enjoying watching the work progess! The climbing frame should be getting fixed in April (fingers crossed). We have new fencing up around the river for greater security and safety.

3 Sheffield Half Marathon Andy and Jodie Thake along with Matt Sanderson are running the Sheffield half marathon and raising funds for Dobcroft Infant and Junior Schools. Please feel free to donate at: or at either school office, or on the day. They will be running in costume and if you wish to join the fun the bottom of Knowle Lane is the place to be- Sunday 8 th April. Good Luck &thank you!! Head Teacher Awards These children have been awarded a head teacher award this half term: Year 3- Timothy, Martha, Jasmine G, Henry B, Harriet, Hannah, Sonny. Year 4- Caitlin F-K, Noah, Abigail, Adam, Lottie, Year 5- Matilda N, Fahad, Leo P, Amber, George H, Talah Year 6 -Sarah, Ayo, Max C, Cici, Zinedine, Zoe Warrilow Trophy for living our school values:maleeka, Sophie S, Tilly M, Joseph W World Down Syndrome Day A big thank you to everyone who took part and donated to World Down Syndrome day and wore silly socks. We raised which will be donated to the Sheffield Down Syndrome Society. Year 6 Netball Two Y6 netball teams went to St Wilfrids on Friday 16 March with Miss Wilson and played some friendly practice games. It was an informal session but all players performed well, although the shooters struggled with the higher posts. We are hoping to get ours moved up to 10 feet over the Easter break which will help them all to be more prepared for the future. Our Year 6 netballers made it through various rounds to secure their place in the finals. They played an impressive set of matches and succeeded in being the winners of their group and joint Sheffield school champions! Excellent work girls and a big well done to Miss Wilson and all of her hard work on Friday lunchtimes Sport Relief Thank you to Mr White and Mrs Conroy for organising a fun afternoon of activities. Overall we raised 197 for Sport Relief. Easter Music to School Many children took part in our Easter music performance at the end of term and certainly showed what varied and competent talent we have at Dobcroft. There were many individual performances including solo singing and piano pieces as well as the recorder group, guitar group and much more- well done musicians and well done to Mrs Waggott for her continued hard work inspiring musicians in our school.

4 Year 5 Performance The year 5 s put on an Easter show for parents and carers around the theme of the Egyptians- their current topic. The performance included song, dance, acting and Parents were then invited to visit classrooms to view the children s work on display and we received some lovely feedback from our visitors. A great team performance. Interesting and fun What a wonderful production. I learnt so much Who knew historical information could be presented in such an entertaining waywell done team.

5 Cross Country What a season it has been. We are almost at the end of the season for cross country; only the Y3/4 relays to go. So far, Team Dobcroft have been incredibly successful. The Y5/6 boys have been awarded trophies for winning the overall league, the city championships and the relays. 3 boys made the top 20 in Sheffield. The Y5/6 girls have also been very successful; they come 2nd in the league. They won the city championships and came 3rd and 6th in the relays. Our Y3/4 boys have been leading the way all season. In the league, the A team came 1st and the B team came 2nd. They won the championships and will probably win the relays in April! From that team,6 boys were placed in the top 20 in the city. The Y3/4 girls have struggled to make a full team until the end of the season, but I m sure they will take the city by storm next year. Well done team- Miss Farrah and I have certainly enjoyed seeing you take part. Pete McKeee Pete McKee- local Sheffield artist, came and did an assembly with school, demonstrating some of his techniques. This was a voluntary visit and parents and carers gave generously raising 753. This will be shared between Pete s two favoured charities: Teenage cancer Trust and Sheffield Children s Hospital. We are fortunate enough to have some of his artwork which we will hold a raffle for to raise money for school fund. Year 6 Science Visit Year 6 visited Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet this month, part of science week to take part in several workshops relating to the theme of gears, pulleys and levers- their current science topic. Year 5 Footballers The Y5 boys football teams finally managed some matches on Tuesday 20 March when they travelled to Annsgrove to play against them, and also Carfield. The Blues won 2-0 and drew 1-1, and the Stripes drew 2-2 and lost 0-1. Considering that it was their first time playing as a group/team on grass this season, they all played exceedingly well. They have a game this Wednesday 28 March away at Totley All Saints and then the last matches at home against Totley on 24 April. Read all About it Usbourne Book Fair This was a huge success and we have raised 482- a combination of book sales and sponsorship- a big thank you to everyone who contributed. World Book Day: As usual there were some fabulous costumes from children and staff. Children all wrote a story based around the theme of a Book Thief - some of which are on display outside the office.

6 Science Day As part of our science day Magna visited and held workshops and demonstrations for year 3,4,5. The Kitchen Sink Show was based around the theme of science that you can find and do in the home. Year 4 the Oakes Year 4 had a wonderful time at the Oakes. Activities included the amazing ropes course, the mudder, archery, craft and art, team games, bonfire.. the list goes on. They all had a brilliant time and came home tired, muddy and happy!
