2 President s Message Hello Everyone! We have been without a newsletter for a few months, and it s so nice having it back! Thank you Bob Daniels, one of our newest members, for taking up the gauntlet and running with it! You are a life saver, Bob! A fun tournament cancelled On April 8th due to bad weather, possibly some severe thunder storms, our Carnival tournament was canceled. I don t think we have stopped hearing about that and how disappointed everyone was. It s a fun tournament that everyone always seems to enjoy, and I know that Pat Gonzales was unhappy about having to make that decision. Holmby always gracious hosts Since then we had some of our Lawn Bowlers participate at the Holmby visitation. Long Beach went to Holmby and had a wonderful time and, as always, wonderful FOOD! They are such gracious hosts. Sprinkles didn t happen On May 7th, we had our annual Open House, and sprinkles were in the forecast. Fortunately, it didn t happen, we ended up with clear skies and lots of sun. (See photos on pg four.) We had just under 50 people attend, and out of that, we got 17 temporary members and 2 FULL TIME members. Welcome to our Club! They will all be attending three clinics put on by Patti Balsillie and Diana Justin, to start them off on the right foot (or the left foot, depending on if they are right or left handed). We are looking forward to having them all as full time members as well. We had tournament winners Long Beach hosted two tournaments in May; the first one is the Katy Stone Tournament on May 14th. Katy Stone was a member of our Club for many years and she is sorely missed and this tournament is in her memory. First place winner was our own Eileen Lancedorfer! And 3rd place was Flor Wright! The second tournament was on May 22 for the novice singles, meaning that someone has been a bowler under two years from when they signed up. Denise French (lft) won First Place, and Shelly Cohen (rt) was runner-up. This one tournament happens to be for females only, but the men s novice had theirs at Newport on May 15th. Two of our guys won. Robert Busciglio came in first and Steve Alessi third way to go guys! Pg One
3 Food was great-so was the weather Thanks to Sandra Schlosser, who hosted our Memorial Day BBQ she introduced chicken to our menu! And to all of the helper bees. It was a good time had by all. June is for men In June we are hosting the Men s Southern California Rinks on 6/4 & 6/5- so don t forget, there will be Hospitality Sign-up sheets for a variety of salads, chips & dip and they love their desserts! Don t forget to check out our Tournament & Hospitality Sign Up Board. Can t thank you enough Our Club runs on volunteerism, if it wasn t for YOU, OUR Club would not exist, so Thank you ALL for what you do to keep everything running smoothly. Jackie Huisman My Memorial Day BBQ Experience Hello readers, My name is Daiya, an exchange student from Tokyo, Japan. My major is Business and now I am studying at CSULB. So, this was my first American barbecue and lawn bowling! Through this event, I had noticed many cultural differences between Japan and United States. First, I can rarely see people lawn bowling in Japan. Indoor-bowling is popular in Japan and I ve tried many times, but I felt more expansive playing lawn bowling. And, many people offered me my hand. Since I and most of people in my country admire western or American culture, so I got excited, as if I m being an American! Under the California sunshine, I could experience valuable time. Thank you! Daiya This writeup was submitted by Diaya, a visiting student from Japan being hosted by Laurie Richards and Jeff Weil. 4 Greens News Draw Games Policy There s a lot going on with our greens This year the greens committee has pulled together as a team. Malcolm, Greg, and Steve held down the fort of watering and taking care of our Dennis mowers. Thanks so much for all the help while I recovered from my broken ankle. Looks like a new sandbox As you may have noticed we have a heap of sand that was delivered to our club. This sand will be used after we hollow tine all three greens throughout the year. We are trying to get the North green up and running this summer. American Golf is helping out In May, American Golf came and took out plugs from the North green and filled the holes with fresh sand. This process is called aeration and this helps the green rejuvenate throughout the year. AG will also be solid tining all three greens in July. This will help bring air and water to compacted areas. The planer will be up and ready to level and verticut all greens starting in June. This is another way to promote healthy greens. Summer here we come! Wishing all club members a great time playing on the greens. Please remember to follow the board everyday you practice. Stephanie Johnson The following was adopted by the Board of Directors in July Guidelines for Daily Draw Games 1. The length of morning and afternoon game is 14 ends, unless both skips decide otherwise. 2. The losing team of the first rink to finish the first draw game of each day will take the flag down. 3. Club tournament matches are allowed during draw games. 4. Set up practice matches are not allowed on any regularly scheduled draw days except Saturday afternoon. 5. In case of a Dead End, the jack will be respotted at the T (2 meter center mark). (Rev. 04/12/16) 6. Other rules notwithstanding, Bowls USA Laws of the Game must be followed. Pg Three
5 Photo Gallery Open House Day. Steve Alessi and John Arbogast give demonstration and lessons to visitors. Getting ready to greet visitors on Open House Day. Robert Busciglia, Flor Wright and Heidi Fernandes won 2nd Place in the Laguna Woods Memorial Mixed Triples last month. Ben French claims he is a better draw-shot bowler now with this new approach but is it legal? (For the astute reader, you re probably aghast at what the legs of the chair are doing to the green rest assured, it s not what it seems no grass was touched to make this shot of a shot.) Stephany Johnson, Jackie Huisman, Laurie Richards and Freddie Henson are forming the 3-F Club: Fractured Females Friendship. You have to be a female (duh) and fracture an ankle or wrist. Pg Four
