Thoughts from your President September is creeping up quickly and I am beginning to wonder where the summer has gone. The children have returned to school, the weather is getting cooler and the days are getting shorter. The August cruises at Dairy Queen and Salvatore s were very good. The Lehigh Valley Airport Air Show was great. A few club members participated in the classic car show and attended the Air Show. The many Air Show spectators appreciated all the wonderful automobiles on display.
4 Even though summer is almost over we still have a full schedule of activities over the next months. In addition to our regular Dairy Queen and Salvatore cruises, we also have our Springtown Show, the Phoebe Nursing Home cruise, the Dairy Queen show, Raub s Farm, our Fall Tour, the Halloween Parade, and our Halloween Dinner/Dance, just to mention a few. Hopefully, many of us will participate at these events. Next rainy day might be a good time to go over your insurance policy for the antique cars. Time has a way of slipping past us pretty quickly and those car values of 2000 just don t work anymore. While you re at it, make sure you have the registration and insurance cards in the car and, for those of us with more than one car, it might be prudent to make sure the right cards are in the right cars. I hope you all have a safe and happy Labor Day holiday. We are looking forward to all the great Fall events. Working together we can and will succeed. John V. Mitzak Fall Tour Sunday 10/19/14. We will leave from the Wal-Mart parking lot (on Rte 248) at 9 AM. If you want, you may have breakfast nearby at the 248 Diner before we leave. We plan to visit a museum and coal mine in Lansford, PA. We should arrive at the museum /mine about 10:30AM. We will enjoy coffee and donuts (provided by the club) in their pavilion and proceed into the museum / mine around 11:00AM. We expect to leave the area around 1:00PM. The museum / mine tour fee is $7.00 per person. Museum only, $3.00 per person. If interested, on the return trip, you can stop in Jim Thorpe, PA to tour and / or have lunch. There should be ample paid parking near the railroad station on Rt. 209 or in town. Phoebe Nursing Home Saturday 9/20/2014 (12 to 3) We will meet at the Ritz Bar B Q (302 North 17 th St. Allentown, PA 18104) located at the Allentown Fair Grounds at 11:30 AM and travel as a group to the Phoebe Nursing Home(1925 W. Turner St.) Everyone who brings a car will receive a food voucher. 8 BEHIND THE MOTOMETER WHAT THE? The Easton (PA) Circle has always been bad. Back in horse and buggy days the trolleys with their big overhang on each end would occasionally squash a buggy. Sixty years ago my father-in-law was afraid of the Easton Circle although the similar Oxford Circle in Northeast Philadelphia did not bother him at all. Recent changes with traffic cones did not seem to help much and in my estimation made things worse. There has always been considerable traffic around the circle and an occasional fender bender. Fast forward to June 21, 2014 and any stranger(motorist) trying to figure out how to find Rte. 611 North would probably think, What the? In addition to the usual traffic there were dozens and dozens of Antique and Foreign Cars, hot rods and modified s coming and going around the circle. Then back and forth on Northampton Street. A Cruise Night with a different twist. Perhaps a hundred special interest cars were parked in the quadrants around the circle and the streets were full of people, like it was on Saturday Nights in the 1950 s. People eating and drinking at European style sidewalk tables, couples holding hands, an occasional couple dancing to the DJ s music. (Fred Antunes and his dancing partner) and Dave Schomp commenting on the pretty ladies wandering around. I don t know if any real drag race s took place on Northampton Street that evening as happened years ago. I recall once watching an old 1939 Buick Coupe beat a brand new wheel squealing 1950 Ford Convertible at every light on that which was then the main drag. I also recall getting a ticket for drag racing with my 1953 Oldsmobile, a visit to attorney Dimassi, a bottle of Seagram s 7 for the Easton Policeman and my ticket disappearing Pouf. Ah yes, I remember it well. Thanks to the city and DJ Jimmy for a different kind of Cruise Night. See you on the next Cruise Night on the circle in Easton. P.S. Ask Vice President Joe Vasko about being in the back seat while cruising Northampton Street, oh so long ago. P.S. #2 New member Ian Arnett is recovering from a badly broken ankle.
