Page 2 President s Letter 2017 We continue to grow our club at a steady pace, thanks in large part to the good work provided by our volunteers. This year, we have a full staff with all of the Director s positions filled including Skeet & Trap, Sporting Clays, 5-Stand and Information Technology (IT). In 2016, we continued investing into our sporting clays course with new clay target machine purchases and substantial roadwork on the course to improve navigation and drainage. In response to some recent vandalism, we have posted more No Trespassing signs, put up a gate in our driveway and installed a video surveillance system. Looking ahead, we have initiated grant requests with the Wisconsin DNR (who control Federal Pittman-Robertson funds) and the Friends of the NRA to make repairs on our crumbling Infrastructure; namely the high house on the lower skeet field. If we are successful in acquiring these funds, we will start construction in late spring 2017 to re-grade the lower skeet/middle trap field, build a new high skeet house, build a new trap house and construct new shooting pads that are Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant. We will also purchase a new skeet machine set and a new PAT trap with voice releases. Our new IT Director, Greg Allen, has taken on the responsibility of updating our website and investing in a new cloud-based computer system to automate some of our internal paperwork like maintaining membership information, scoring shoots, posting scores in real time and tracking volunteer work hours. I m looking forward to seeing you at the club soon. Please bring your friends! Tim Kuski, President
Details of WS&TC Memberships For the 2017 membership year, your WS&TC Board is continuing the incentives to volunteer and work on behalf of the club. There is no mandatory membership work hour requirement. Membership fees remain $35 for a family or single person one-year membership. (Jan 1 thru Dec 31). How can you reduce (or eliminate!) your shooting fees with work hours? Recruit a new member: earn 5 work hours Work on tasks specified by the board, shooting directors, committee chair, or event coordinator, such as grounds / equipment maintenance or staffing shooting events Use your personal equipment for club site work as authorized: work hours earned are based on equipment weight and are in addition to the man-hours. (details at the counter) Hours worked in a previous year will roll over to the current year for redemption. Work hours may be redeemed to purchase shooting cards which further reduce shooting fees for members For work in excess of 75 hours within a calendar year, a round of 25 targets will be free for every hour worked, up to 100 rounds. These can be claimed in 10 hours increments via a Worker Card, good for 1 year from the date of issue. Help yourself to lower shooting fees by helping out your club! 2017 Fees Membership (single / family). $35 Family membership extends shooting privileges to a member s spouse and children under the age of 19, or any member s child under the age of 23 if such child is enrolled full time in college or technical school. 5 Page 5 WS&TC 2017 Women s Trap League Girls Night Out MONDAYS June 12 th thru August 21 Astonishing. Amazing. Awesome. Accurate. These are the fitting team names of the 2016 Women s Trap League and the tradition will continue in 2017! Awesome - The highest compliment a program can receive is when participants have so much fun that they come back and bring their friends! For 2016, 12 ladies continued honing their shooting skills for their second, third, or fourth year in the Girl s Night Out Trap League. Amazing - Once again there was a range of experience with shotguns, from absolutely none to wanting to better their hunting skills for the new participants. About half of the regular ladies had their own shotguns (and some causing serious envy from the coaches!) while the other half used club guns and once fitted properly, they were particular about using the same shotgun. Astonishing It is gratifying to observe and coach new shooters especially when the addition of an eye patch to address previously unknown cross-eye dominance increases her score by 13 targets in one week! While there is a bit of ribbing and competitiveness on occasion, the support, encouragement, and compliments show the camaraderie among the shooters. Accurate Indeed! The average score from 2015 to 2016 increased by 2 targets. The high-gun average was 20.5 targets; two shooters increased their weekly average by 4 targets over the previous year; the league s youngest shooter won a GOLD MEDAL at Badger State Games; and there were significantly fewer single-digit scores. At Girl s Night Out, we emphasize safety, education, correctly fitting the shotgun, correct form, and FUN. The festive finale pot luck and everything chocolate awards also included an Annie Oakley, plus a few targets of 5- stand and skeet Women s Trap League starts MONDAY June 12 th and continues thru MONDAY August 21; there will be no league on Monday July 3rd. Coaches are onsite from 5-8 pm on Mondays, and new participants will be oriented including shotgun-fitting the first two Mondays; returning participants will have a brief refresher session. All participants purchase a club membership (good for the whole family!) at $35, and the 10-round league fee is $40. This is the same rate as the 15-round league, prorated for 1/3 fewer rounds. Practice / additional shooting can be paid round-by-round, or with 10-round Trap/Skeet bonus Card. Shells can be purchased on-site, or participants may bring their own (see details in the brochure) An informative brochure is at the club counter; contact Kris Ullmer ( or KrisUllmer@gmail.com) for additional details, or to sign up! Can YOU help? Can you coach / provide shooting tips for Trap? Can you keep watch that shooting is safe? Can you score a few rounds? If you say yes to any of these, you can log volunteer hours and join us for the evening dessert! Contact Kris Ullmer with your availability; you need not commit to every night.
Club Improvements Page 6 Purchased four new MEC 400E Sporter traps with Renair bases in the spring of We now have enough automatic traps to have a 50- bird fully automatic course. To make our Ironman 100-bird course fully automatic, we still need to rent about six 12 volt traps. We started working on the culverts on the bottom of the sporting clays course by hand in the fall of 2015 and realized that we needed a significant amount of ditching work. We had to bring in a big excavator, repair and replace many culverts and hauled in 50 yards of road base at the bottom of the course. We also chose to raze the old outhouse, which was falling in on itself.
Page 7 Club Improvements (cont.) We purchased a new, energy efficient furnace and air conditioner at cost from one of Greenheck s manufacturer s reps in Portland, Oregon. Besides saving energy, the new system operates much quieter and maintains a more even temperature in the space than the old unit (which was failing). The installation was done by members of our volunteer work force. We ve added a new gas grill for special events
Page 8 Youth Shooting Programs at Wausau Skeet and Trap Club The 2016 Youth Shooting Program is history. We had 19 students enrolled in the SCTP (Scholastic Clay Target Program) at the club this year and welcomed SCTP visitors from other clubs coming over to practice for state competitions in Skeet and Sporting clays. Wausau Skeet and Trap, our club s SCTP team name, graduated three seniors out of the program at the end of the 2016 season. Thank You August, Orion and Roje for your commitment over the years! Our team shot against teams from Antigo, Tomahawk, Stevens Point, Merrill, McFarland, Manitowoc and NW WI in either a postal or head to head format. The league is seven weeks, preceded by practice weeks, and followed by a state high school shoot in Mayville as well as Conference and State SCTP shooting at Rome, Wisconsin, ATA fields. In June, WS&TC hosted the first annual Thunder in the Valley SCTP Team Shoot as a fund raiser. Additionally, we raffled a Midway Foundation sponsored SKB 28 gauge side by side shotgun. WS&TC Sporting Clays Director John Saris won that gun. Thank you all for your support of the raffle. For 2017, we have a second SKB 28 ga SxS gun at the club. If you saw last year s impressive gun, this year s is even more beautiful! The highly figured wood, case hardening and overall gun is more striking than last year s model stay tuned for raffle ticket sales. This is a 501(c)(3) raffle, sponsored by the State SCTP Foundation, therefore your ticket purchase is tax deductible as a charity contribution. Tickets are one for $20, three for $50, with only 200 tickets available. Costs for the SCTP (Scholastic Clays Target Program) are $100 per student. This will help to offset the club s cost of league fees, shot shells, insurance, seven weeks of league shooting and a limited number of practice rounds. Students are encouraged to bring their own shotguns, which are checked for safety and fit. WS&TC has some shotguns, shell pouches and vests that can be used. The first student and parent meeting is scheduled for March 12, DryFire training and practice precedes on-field shooting starting in March.
Page 9 John Muir Shotgun Camp, October 20, 2016 we hosted 55 middle school shooters from the John Muir Middle School. 28 club members mentored and coached the students, many of whom had never handled a firearm before. Students shot trap and rabbit targets. Teachers from John Muir are always appreciative of the experience our club members provide. A special thank-you to our members for providing their time and 20 ga shotguns for this outing for the students. Wingshooter Training This is a DNR sponsored program using steel shot to enhance shotgunning success and reduce crippling of game. This is an advanced program with practice on crossing targets, subtending targets for distance, patterning shotguns, load experiments and classroom discussions of various loads. Cost is $25, payable to the WI DNR. There are two sessions, Saturday August 19 th and Sunday 20 th, from 9 am to 4 pm each day. Each day has 10 spots for participants. Sign up on the WI DNR Wild Site. First come, first served. Please note: this is not field qualification for Hunter Education! Practice, practice, practice shoot til your arms fall off is the motto, with targets and shells provided. Participants need a shotgun capable of two shots and an adjustable choke system. 12 gauge is preferred but some 20 ga loads are available. Saturday August 19 or Sunday August 20 9:00-4:00 with lunch available Register at: WI DNR Wild Site For more information on any of the mentioned shooting opportunities, contact Randy Ullmer or dotwhyru@aol.com. If you are interested in helping, let me know!
