1 Turner Student Wins 2017 Terrific Trees of Texas Arbor Day Poster Contest Congratulations to fourth grader, Zisel Braza. Her poster was selected as the winner in the 2017 Terrific Trees of Texas Arbor Day Poster contest from our school. Zisel along with her teacher, Ms. Tracy Gray were invited to attend the 2017 Tree Campus USA Proclamation & Ribbon cutting ceremony recognizing Lone Star College Montgomery. The ceremony was part of 2017 Texas Wildlife & Woodland Expo and Spring Fling sponsored by Montgomery County Beautification Association, Lone Star College Montgomery, Texas A&M Forest Service, Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service and the Texas Parks & Wildlife. Autumn McDonald, 2nd Grade Teacher, Cannan Elementary School Mrs. McDonald's second grade class is using the Poster Method to solve real world math problems. This was the first time for the students to implement this method in math. The students were presented with a problem to solve and instructions to find two ways to come to an answer. The students worked in groups to plan, solve, illustrate how to solve, explain, and defend their answer to the class. The activity had the students actively engaged in finding a solution and using math terminology while having meaningful conversations with their peers.

2 Parmley Holds Super Hero Color FUN RUN Michele Adkison, Math Teacher, Willis High School Willis High School Math teacher, Michelle Adkison is teaching her class about scatter plots. Her students generated data by timing each other on how long it took to say a tongue twister that she asigned them through Google Classroom. Each student would take turns saying a tongue twister while the other members of the group timed him or her. The group continued the process, collecting data to create a graph that was used to estimate times. Students then intrepreted results and made predictions from the graphs they created.

3 School Board Meeting, April 12, 2017 Nicole Clark, MVP, 4th Grade Teacher, Turner Elementary Emily Meachen, Unity LaRouche, Secondary Student of the Month, Mr. Harkrider Brabham Students help with pledge and prayer-taylor Jones, Cole Arnold, Alexander Colby The American Legion Auxiliary Unit #618 presented WISD with more than $8,000 profit from the Chili Cook Off Charlene Cordery (Gold), Corie Barlow (Best of Show), Chloe York (Gold) Wrestling Team: Coach Thomas, Tiffany Cherry, Alyssa Murillo, Colton Stalsby Eric Burns Named Permanent Principal of CC Hardy Elementary During the meeting, Superintendent Harkrider announced that Eric Burns, named Interim Principal of CC Hardy in December 2016, was being named the permanent principal effective immediately. Fellow school administrators and Burns celebrated this news, which came as a surprise, but was really no surprise at all, as Burns has already made a huge impact on the teachers and students at CC Hardy. Congratulations Mr. Burns!

5 Montgomery County Fair Highlights The 2017 Montgomery County Fair was a HUGE success for Willis ISD students! Members of the Willis FFA, Willis 4-H and Champions 4-H participated in all aspects of the fair, and did so with great showmanship and teamwork. Students put in long hours preparing non-livestock projects, fabricating ag mechanics projects, practicing speaking and interview skills and tending to their livestock, and these hours paid off big time for several of our students. Saturday morning began the fair. Non-Livestock projects were turned in, the Ag Mechanics contest was held, and the Turkey, Chicken and Rabbit shows started in the Livestock Barn. As the day progressed, our Fair Queen candidate gave her public speech and did her interview. By the end of the day, Willis ISD had been awarded Grand and Reserve Champion along with the 5th consecutive Sweepstakes Award in the Ag Mechanics contest, Grand Champion Turkey (Colton Backhus), Grand Champion Chickens (Kylie Dobraski), Grand Champion Photography (Maggie Dorris) and crowned the 2nd Runner Up Fair Queen (Kassi Koy). On Sunday, Willis ISD continued their success in the Livestock Barn. In the Scramble Heifer show, students took the Grand Champion British Heifer (Hailey VanWagner) and Grand Champion Exotic heifer along with Grand Overall Scramble Heifer (Kolby Hughes). The Breeding Beef show followed with a Grand Champion Angus breed and Reserve Champion British Heifer (Mikala Snead), Grand Champion Chianina breed (Wrangler Luke), Reserve Champion ORB breed (Kolby Hughes), and Grand Champion ORB along with Reserve Champion Exotic Heifer (Kassi Koy). The day rounded out with the Lamb show where WISD had several students showing lambs in a very competitive show. Tuesday started off with the Goat show. Within WISD we had 5 goat entries with 2 class winners (Journey Mathis, Mason Dutton) and 3 sale slots! The Steer show rounded out the Livestock Shows, of the 9 entries from Willis ISD, we had 4 class winners (Grace Hoegemeyer, Hutton Hoegemeyer, Mason Mathis and Hannah Rogers) and Reserve Grand Champion (Hannah Rogers)! Wednesday evening, the Livestock Auction brought an end to many of the projects that the students have raised over the past year. Hard work and dedication paid off as we auctioned off 26 livestock animals including 3 Grand Champions and 2 Reserve Grand Champions, Willis took 5 of the top 10 sale slots!!! Members of Montgomery County and Willis Community came out in full force to support our youth. Thursday at the Fair was much quieter than the other days, most of the livestock had been moved out and the Replacement Heifer show took place. WISD had 2 entries in the show, Kelly Carmack and Jewel Steen (4th place). The Replacement Heifer committee has its own auction and own set of buyers, who come to the sale to purchase heifers to replace their personal stock. The Replacement Heifer program is an intense one that does not just involve raising and showing the heifer, but keeping records on monthly gains and expenses, taking a rigorous test and being interviewed by professionals within the cattle industry. Thursday night, at the Calf Scramble banquet, Willis ISD students took home 5 of 10 awards given out---hailey VanWagner-Best Overall Scrapbook, Heather Harrison-Most Original Scrapbook and Runner Up Best Overall Scrapbook, Kolby Hughes-Supreme Heifer Award(Kolby pictured below) and Grand Overall Scramble Heifer Project ($3000 scholarship). Monday was a busy day for WISD, the most participation in the fair comes during the Swine show. By far the longest day for the students who raise these animals. Willis had over 30 entries in the swine show and at the end of the day walked from the ring with a Grand Champion Barrow (Kassi Koy) and a Reserve Champion Barrow (Sierra Reynolds) along with numerous class winners.
