2 Jammin to Leadership 2011 DAY 1 We were welcomed to Walker with an opening presentation that consisted of a concert by the Bogus Brothers and a glow stick flash mob! During the First General Session, we were introduced to our Platform guests and the convention s theme. Additionally the officers made their dramatic entrance by dropping out of the ceiling dressed as Kiss. At the Second General Session we were graced by Monte Selby, who sang and played songs on his guitar of inspiration and motivation. Delegates later returned to the school for a night of dancing, laughter, and the division dodgeball tournament, where Central Division won the MASC Dodgeball Championship! We also met all the candidates that were running for offices at this time! For more information on Monte Selby please visit: Top: Bogus Brothers perform the opening act! 3 Jammin to Leadership 2011 Upon returning to Walker- Hackensack-Akeley High School, delegates attended various Round Table sessions for idea and project sharing. Alvin Law spoke to the delegation during the Third General Session. Born without arms, he shared his stories and the adversity that he experienced. He showed us that obstacles that stand in our way only make us stronger if we overcome them. For the Fourth General Session, Division Presidents reported on the events and goals of their respective divisions. Delegates then attended two HOT TOPIC sessions where they discussed issues that are present in Minnesota schools. After reporting on the HOT TOPIC issues, students then made care packages for the Red Bulls Infantry that will soon be deployed. The Sixth General Session continued at Moon Dance Jam, where the MASC banquet was held. Here Travis Rinkenberger & Samantha Asper recieved the Ardis A. Kyker Scholarship and Katie McLaughlin & Alennah Westlund received the MASC Scholarship. Following the banquet, the MASC delegates enjoyed a dance and fireworks finale accompanied by Katie Perry s Firework. Since then we have had experiences that we will cherish for life. Being a part of the the MASC Executive Committee involved quite a bit of traveling. In June we headed off to Indianapolis for the NASC convention and were quickly introduced to some of the most committed MASC delegates. It was an amazing experience that allowed us to bond with our fellow Minnesota friends, and meet people from across the country. We were also involved in the President s Forum in Alexandria, and then the Region Four meeting in February where we met the Executive Committees from across the midwest. A big part of Hello & Goodbye being an officer has been networking and meeting new people. Being elected into these offices have given us so many opportunities, for which we are very thankful. Thanks should be given to our wonderful advisors who transport us safely to everywhere we need to be and for giving all their support and advice. Additionally, we would like to thank Ann Postlewaite and Sue Iverson for all the hard work that they put in. Everything they do is appreciated by everyone involved with MASC. Also, thank you to the students of MASC. This organization is for you, and wouldn t exist without you. So thank you for giving us this opportunity to serve you. It has truly been a memorable year. Thanks again and best of luck to next year s Executive Committee! [5]
6 HELPING OUR NEIGHBORS RIVALS TEAM UP TO RAISE MONEY FOR FALLEN ATHLETE Zach Gabbard is a 17 year old junior at Perham High School. His life changed in January when he collapsed during a thursday night basketball Zach and his medical expenses. The normally rivalrous teams ended up raising over $5000. Over 1500 people filled the Laker gymnasium in game against Dilworth-Glendon-Felton. He was rushed to Fargo, as his family and school tried to comprehend what happened. After arriving in Fargo, Gabbard underwent open heart surgery. After multiple One Clap for Zach support of Zach. Silent auctions along with food and a paper air plane contest helped support Zach. Additionally, One Clap for Zach t-shirts were sold and filled the bleachers. This was undoubtedly a tragedy, procedures and two months of recovery, Zach is doing better and got to watch his team play at the but it definitely united two communities behind one cause. State basketball tournament, which they won. During this trying time, Gabbard has received an outpouring of support. 7 YOU CAN T STOP THE BEAT!! This years state service project was YOU CAN T STOP THE BEAT! Our goal was to raise money for struggling music programs across the state of Minnesota. Many schools participated, and came up with great ways of raising money. Some schools raised money by Stopping the Bop, where they played the Hanson Brothers Mmmm Bop until a set monetary goal was reached. Other schools did money drives, and one school even hosted donkey basketball! YOU CAN T STOP THE BEAT turned out to be a great success! Overall, MASC schools raised over $5000 for local programs and the Minnesota Beatle Project! Great Job MASC! RED BULLS INFANTRY CONVENTION PROJECT At the state convention, we assembled care packages for the local Red Bulls Infantry. We filled them with snacks, chapsticks, and decks of cards. We also included personal letters from each of the delegates and encouraged them to keep in contact with the school that mailed them their package. These packages will be mailed to the troops when they will be deployed to Kuwait next month. MASC 1667 North Snelling Avenue Suite C-100 St. Paul, MN Director of Student Leadership: Ann Postlewaite, ann@mail.massp.org Don t forget to send in your stories and photos from your council! We will included them in the next newsletter! Sophia Sodhi will be assembling the newsletter next year and will appreciate any information you give her!
