1 The Grubstake September 2013 Volume 29 Number 3 President s Message: I m sure if Bruce had sent me a President s message he d certainly start by congratulating our new Life time members, Mary Lois VanSooy, Tex & Betty Broughton and Marge Gabel. He d also recognize the well deserved West Coaster of the Year award winners Jose and Ali Marquez. Further he d point out that we still have many unfilled positions waiting for someone to volunteer. It s always more fun when you participate so why not join in. We are always looking for program ideas so please let a board member know if you have an idea or would like to make your own presentation. Our plans for the Octoberfest meeting is coming together well (see details elsewhere). Another issue we have is a lack of storage for some of our Rendezvous supplies and other club assets. Rent on a storage unit is too high a recurring expense so we are looking for an alternative solution. The board would be willing to purchase a nice storage shed if someone has the space and willingness. (And from Bruce s message 10 years ago and still appropriate today) Only 3 months to the Christmas dinner meeting. Start thinking about offering to cook a turkey and planning side dishes. Remember! Cover and fill your holes so we don t lose our hobby. Keep on hunting and the good things will come. Bruce Gentner

4 Upcoming Events September Field Trip When: Sunday, September 22, 2013 Time: 10:30 am Where: Hartwell Park, Long Beach (corner of Clark & Carson) What: Bob Ketchum will run the September outing. Bring your detectors, a chair, some lunch if your wish and join in on the fun we have at the monthly outings! 2013 Field Trips October 20th Bonelli Regional Park - Dan Perrone November - Lora Persgard & December - No Hunt Squeek Gentner September Meeting Program Bob Hirsch will present a program on the relics he finds. His programs are always a big hit so you don t want to miss out. October Meeting The October meeting will feature items donated by club members that will be raffled off. We are looking for good quality items ($20 value), home made items, baked goods, maybe an item you found (coins, jewelry). Each item will be placed on the tables with a container next to it for tickets. The tickets will be sold for $1 each (6 for $5, 12 for $10 and 25 for $20). You then place as many tickets as you want into any or all of the containers for items you are interested in winning. At the allotted time we will draw the winning tickets for each item. Remember this is in lieu of the yearly auction which was getting stale. And as a bonus, Jose will bring his famous chili and hot dogs for sale with proceeds going to the club. Find of the month will not be held in October so November will be a two month display. Should be great fun!

9 Life Time Member Awards Mary Lois VanSooy: You sure know how to make a girl feel loved and special. I am proud and honored to be a Lifetime Member of an organization that has been an important part of Kirk s and my life. I always felt more reward than work for any small part in the positions I held. I realized how much I ve missed my treasured friends and will plan to participate as I can in the future. The honor, the plaque and flowers touched me deeply. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU ALL. You are all pure gold. I really do miss each and everyone of you and hope that Dianna will be available to bring me once in awhile. 12 Club Business General meeting August 14, 2013 The meeting was called to order at 7:30 by President Bruce Gentner. Our country s Pledge of Allegiance was recited by our members. Bruce introduced the guests. The minutes from the July meeting were approved as written. The 2013/2014 Budget was approved by a vote by the members present at the meeting. Ralph Crowther presented lifetime membership awards to Mary Lois Vansooy, Marge The board has decided not to publish the treasurer s report in the online version of the Grubstake. Jose Marquez will review the treasury status at the general meeting and have copies available. Gable, Tex and Betty Broughton. Bruce Gentner presented Westcoaster of The Year. Congratulations to Jose and Ali. We would like to thank Dan Persgard for a great job on the presentation on Roaring Camp. It was enjoyed by all. 14 Metal Detecting Catch Mat Metal Detecting Catch Mat by Tom Tanner Metal Detecting Hobby Talk Metal Detecting Catch Mat Tip by Tom Tanner This is what I do to make a rubber catch mat for turf metal detecting. I go to a truck and tire place (the type that service big rigs and heavy equipment). Fish in their dumpster for a large diameter inner-tube. Then cut a dinner plate sized square-ish portion out. You must cut it in such a way as to where the concave interior side (the rounded dish shaped interior) creates a slightly cupped shape. By cutting open an inner-tube, and observing how it naturally bends/curves, you can see where you are going to need to cut. Then cut to shape, wash it up, and there you go. A single inner tube will make 5 or 6 of these rubber catch mats. The benefits of this type of catch mat are: 1) the rubber resists dirt (doesn't absorb like a cloth towel would, for instance), & cleans off easily. 2) It folds up tight to put in your apron (see the pix), yet pops out to full size with a "spring-out" action of the pre-formed inner-tube slight concave shape it was originally in. Note: Be aware that rubber inner-tubes come in different gages (thicknesses) and that the thinner gages are preferable. a) The thinner gages fold / roll up into a smaller fold. b) The thinner gages perform the same function, so no need for the thicker gauge of rubber.

18 20 Years Ago this month September Years Ago this month September 2003 President Ron Cole called the meeting to order. There were 78 members and 5 guests present. Jim Wronski led the annual auction. The club raised $217 selling items like stuffed animals, books, a rose mad of soap, basketball hoop etc. Challenge awards were presented to Ralph Crowther and Mary Urieta for level 1. A special prize went to Tex Broughton. We need more tables, we need more room was the call from the Find of the Month chairman as we had 27 people displaying including 6 first timers. Pat Sherrick is determined to prove to some of you, that it not how large your display, but how an what you display. Pat had only one item in her display and it was good for first place in Most Unique - a penny with a bullet lodged in it. John Forrey found himself with a second place in the Best Token category with a Frontier Hotel an d Gambling Hall Free Room token. Ralph Crowther took a third place in Best Gold. Many West Coasters attended the Central Coast hunt. Mary Lois VanSooy took 2 nd place in the women s division; Ralph Crowther took 4 th in the men s division and Kim Crowther took 1 st in the Junior Hunt. The meeting was called to order by President Bruce Gentner. There were 86 members and 8 guests present (editor: that s a good crowd!). The month s program was the annual auction hosted by Blaze Guerin. A silver dollar went to the biggest spender. The club made $ Dick and Nancy showed off all their gold from their nearly two month trip to Hawaii. From the Find of the Month summary: The winners in each category won a silver round (editor: silver was at $4.85 ave in 2003). Bruce Gentner won first place in Best Gemstone for a gold nugget ring with diamonds. (Roger Libby was a close second). Nancy I d rather be in Hawaii Waters won Best Gold with a huge gold bracelet (Bruce Gentner was a distant second). Best Silver went to Arthur Bashaw with a huge silver ram s head necklace (Roger Libby was a distant second). Best US coin went to Bob Hirsch who displayed an 1899 Barber quarter. Best Foreign Coin/Token also went to Bob Hirsch with a Good for $1.00 token (Dick Waters was second). And finally a three-peat with Bob Hirsch winning Most Unique with a 1870 s era breast pump.
