President s Report What a fabulous White Christmas in July dance we had! I've had dozens of great and positive thank you s from our members and visitors that came dressed up beautifully in the spirit of a White Christmas. Jump and Jive we're in top form that night and didn't disappoint anyone, especially with Vince's spontaneous Christmas song from his childhood, the band just followed his lead and it was great, he said they had never played that song in the band before. Vince told me later he's been playing at R n Roll dances for 2 decades around Victoria and has never seen such happiness and love bubbling throughout the night and the effort to decorate the hall was outstanding. I was totally blown away with his comments, thank you Jump and Jive. I do sincerely believe that spreading our love in this club is the way for us to prosper and flourish. Thank you to all of you that gave the love that night. Also a big thanks to the great team of committee and members that put in a huge effort to set up the decorations. We will definitely have another Christmas in July next year. Rock n Roll lessons are still being well attended thanks to our wonderful teachers Chris and Raelene. With only two weeks left of this block and then party night on Thursday 10th August, so come and join in the night. Bring a plate of food to share and Chris and Raelene will give out certificates. Entry to Party night is free and then it's straight into the next block starting on Thursday 17th August so tell your friends to come and learn Rock n Roll! GJR s first social event of the year was held on Sunday 23rd at Leura Park, Curlewis. We had a small gathering but the food was beautifully presented and lots of it and at $30 a head it was great value. There was a cosy atmosphere with a great log fireplace and lots of chatting and laughter while we were entertained with some background music. A big thank you to Vicky and Rod, Maggie and Eddy for a great job. Looking forward to our next social event. Watch this space! GJR members only dinner dance is creeping up in September 2nd so make sure you book and pay your $20 on line and book your seats with Glenda for this fabulous night. You must renew your membership to be able to attend this Dinner Dance. The club has very heavily subsidised this night and it should be a wonderful event for our members. You will be spoilt with a 3 course meal from John and Marty's Bistro. Any special culinary requirements should be given to Glenda when you book your seat. Tables of 10 only for ease of dining and arrival time will be pm sharp. The cut-off date for booking and payment for this event is FRIDAY 25th AUGUST!! Don't miss out! Book and pay early. The Vincent's will be our show band. It's been 2 years since we've had them play at one of our dances and I'm really looking forward to this great night. It's a formal night so frock up!! See you then. Geelong Jukebox Rockers AGM is coming up on Monday 11th of September at 7pm. I will be approaching some of our newer members to join in the club committee to help keep a new fresh feel to the club, but anyone that feels they can make a contribution to our club with kindness and commitment please let me know. Cass Our next Dance is Saturday 5th August with The Fender Benders. You can book with Glenda and pay at the door for this dance. We also have Louise from Retro Clothing for you to browse and buy. "SPREAD THE LOVE" Keep on Rockin, Cass

Previously we advised that there would be no Monday night social on the 3 rd of September due to a booking by the Polish Club. 5 Hello my lovelies, I found this article on the net and thought I would share it with you all as I found it very inspiring! It is from a vintage fashion blog called Nora Finds and it is about getting your vintage wardrobe started. Enjoy! 1. Get inspired Whether they are old photographs, vintage blogs, pinterest or instagram - there are so many beautiful images out there showing lovely ladies (both then and now) wearing vintage. 2. Start small Your favorite vintage ladies (yes, this includes Dita) didn t start by wearing vintage head-to-toe. Whether it is a vintage hat or a vintage dress, they all started with one special piece. Wearing vintage should be natural and not feel like you are wearing a costume. 3. Find/create an occasion to wear vintage Some occasions dictate you to dress up or wear special pieces. It might be a wedding or a gala that requires you to go shopping, so think of it as an opportunity to wear vintage. You might want to buy a unique fascinator or a lovely brooch to secure your pashmina. It is a great way to adopt a different look, and you can be sure you won t bump into someone else wearing the same pieces. 4. Stay true to yourself Whatever fashion style you have (modern or vintage, sporty or feminine), it is most important to be true to yourself. This is something that I took years to learn - I used to wear clothes to follow trends and they often do not suit me or make me feel comfortable. As your style evolves to become more vintage, you will find that some styles and decades suit you more than others. There isn t any need to force yourself to wear something you don t feel comfortable in. You will also learn more about your own body shape by trying on different decades. 5. Research Research is an important aspect of wearing vintage. You want to learn to identify vintage clothing quickly (especially when you re thrifting or going through ebay), to quickly figure out whether they are appropriately priced/designer pieces, and whether you should adopt them into your wardrobe. You want to learn about the construction of vintage pieces, how to clean and store them, and have an idea of age and price. 6. Learn from the experts Your research can be overwhelming and filled with contradicting information. So who should you trust? Well - the experts. Whether it is from forums, blogs, or vintage sellers - you can learn a lot by just chatting with them and following discussions. If you have any question don t be afraid to ask. These are people who have been wearing, collecting, or selling vintage for many many years. It is always handy to learn from other people s positive and negative experiences too. 7. Visit vintage events and shops The best way to learn about how to wear vintage is to be surrounded by vintage lovers and beautiful clothes. Visiting vintage events might be a bit intimidating at first, but you will soon realise there are so many different styles and levels of vintageness. Vintage shops are also great - they often stock a great variety and if you chat to the shopkeepers or owners you will get the best advices and ideas on how to wear a piece and how it suits you. 8. Realise that it is a process Do not feel like you have to replace your whole wardrobe with vintage. Do not feel like you have to start wearing vintage lingerie or get matching hats to all your vintage. Just like everything, wearing vintage is a process. Give yourself time to learn about your style, to make mistakes, and to not go bankrupt in the process. 9. (Controversial Statement): It is just clothes There are often stereotypes attached to people who wear vintage. But remember, just because you want to start wearing vintage doesn t mean that you need to learn how to swing dance, buy a vintage car, or give up your office job and become a pin up model. I am a firm believer that you need to find your own comfort zone. I love my vintage but don t always hang out with vintage-wearing folks or feel like I need to give up my science job to open a vintage shop. It can just be a fashion style, it doesn t have to be a lifestyle if you don t want it to be. I want you to also remember that it is okay to make mistakes or regret your outfit choices. It is a learning process and hey - we all have outfits we regret wearing. I still have moments when I caught my reflection and thought that my shoes don t actually match my dress. It s not a big deal. 10. Prepare yourself for comments/compliments/attention Oh yes, this will happen. You will receive comments like Are you going to the races? or Aren t you too dressed up? - comments that might make you doubt what you re wearing or feel out of place. I say hold your head up high and say Oh no, this is what I wear all the time and just remember that it is not wrong to be fabulous. Another stranger will also tell you your dress is beautiful, your hat is amazing, or they simply love your style. And remember, it is because you DO look amazing :) Take the compliment and don t forget to thank them. Attention can be intimidating but if you are comfortable in what you wear you will soon get used to it.

When Where Time Tuesday 15 th August White Eagle House 7.00pm All members welcome Due to many members of our regular demonstration team being away we are not booking any demos for the time being. Watch this spot when the birds begin to fly south again.. We would like to welcome the following new members to the club: Keith Lowerson Judy Lowerson Jonathan Billing Diane Billing Joy Bishop Also, a special welcome to Eyvonne Robson who I forgot to mention in an earlier newsletter.

Membership: Just a reminder that as our membership year is the same as the financial year memberships so memberships are now overdue. Don t forget you can pay by EFT: Bendigo Bank BSB Acc: Members Dinner Dance: While we are on the subject of membership there will be a Members Only Dinner Dance on Saturday the 2 nd of September (see the notice in this newsletter) with the fabulous Vincents. There will be a three course sit-down dinner beforehand at White Eagle which will be heavily subsidised by the club. This dance will only be open to financial members so please make sure you are paid up and financial as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Any new members will need to get their memberships in ASAP to ensure they are accepted in time. This will be a formal dance so it should be a wonderful evening and a great excuse to wear your best dress ladies! AGM: A reminder that the AGM will be held on Monday the 11 th of September at 7pm at White Eagle House. Nominations will be accepted for the positions of Vice President and Secretary which will become vacant. Warren has also submitted his intention to resign as club treasurer at the AGM so the position of Treasurer will also be vacant.the club is also in need of several ordinary committee members to help alleviate the work load on the executive committee. If you feel you could help out with any of the following tasks please give some thought to being on the committee: Web hosting and maintenance of the club Facebook page Newsletter editor Maintenance of the club music database, computer and ipod Creation, design and printing of dance flyers Maintenance of the club membership database Don t forget that you can t be on the committee and you can t vote at the AGM unless you are a financial member. *** Paul will be ing all appropriate forms to members shortly. *** New Committee Member As you know we put out a call for help in the last few issues of the newsletter due to many of committee members either resigning or going on extended leave. Lea Gilliland has graciously volunteered to become a committee member until the AGM and her application was accepted at the July meeting. Lea s help and expertise will help alleviate some of the added pressure on the remaining committee members and the committee welcomes her on board. Vice President Position As expected there were no applications or nominations for the role of Vice President which was advertised in the May newsletter. As a result the committee voted that Janet Butcher will retain the position until the AGM.

Good news! The line dance lessons (ahem, sorry rock and roll line up dance lessons!) on Monday nights have been so well supported that the committee has decided to not only keep them going but to increase them to EVERY Monday at 7.00pm. Lea and I have put our heads together and decided that each new dance taught will be followed the next week with a revision class by the same teacher so we will each be teaching two classes in a row. This will give the opportunity for better consolidation of the dances and hopefully we ll get a few practice dances in too. We will also be teaching some of the popular partner dances as well. Please come along even if you don t have a partner as you can still learn the steps and you ll be ready have a go at our next dance. Lessons will be at the usual time of pm every Monday. Lea will be kicking things off on the 24 th with revision of The Drifter which was taught this week Date Dance Lesson Teacher 24/07/2017 The Drifter (Partner) Revision Lea 31/07/2017 Chilly Cha Cha New Janet 07/08/2017 Chilly Cha Cha Revision Janet 14/08/2017 Chicago Swing (Partner) New Lea 21/08/2017 Chicago Swing (Partner) Revision Lea Yeehaa! I mean, Rock ON! The Lincolns New CD I have managed to secure a limited number of The Lincoln s new CD, Hundred Dollar Bill, which you can purchase from me for the princely sum of $20. Lee believes this is the band s best CD yet and I tend to agree with him. It has the band s usual format of 8 originals and 8 covers, all of which are fantastic and have that unique Lincoln s sound. Definitely no track skipping! These are all awesome and the band is enjoying some great feedback on social media. While I would prefer not to post these out due to additional costs involved I am happy for you to text me to reserve your copy for pick up at a Monday night social or our August dance. Janet

Friends Reunited A group of fifteen year old school girls decided to meet up for dinner. They discussed where to eat and finally agreed on the Marine Café because it was cheap and the cutest boy in class lived nearby. Ten years later, the same girlfriends now twenty-five discussed where to meet for dinner. Finally they agreed to meet at the Marine Café because there was no cover charge, beer was cheap, the band was good, and there were plenty of good looking men. Ten years later, the same girlfriends now thirty-five debated where to meet for dinner. Finally they decided to go to the Marine Café because it served good wine, it was near the gym and if they got there after eight there would be no children running around. Ten years later, the same girlfriends now forty-five discussed where to meet for dinner. Finally they agreed on the Marine Café because the martinis were big and the waiters wore tight jeans. Ten years later, the same girlfriends now fifty-five discussed where to meet for dinner. Finally they agreed on the Marine Café because the air conditioning was efficient and the fish was good for their cholesterol. Ten years later, the same girlfriends now sixty-five debated where to meet for dinner. Finally they agreed on the Marine Café because they could get special rates if they went early, the lighting was good and the menu was in large print. Ten years later, the same girlfriends now seventy-five discussed where to meet for dinner. Finally they agreed on the Marine Café because it had wheelchair access and the food wasn t too spicy. Ten years later, the same girlfriends now eighty-five discussed where to meet for dinner. Finally they agreed on the Marine Café because they d never been there before.
