2 Master Classes & Guest Artists offers serious classical and contemporary Dance & Company dance training to youth and adults in a positive, progressive program of study. Classes are offered year-round in ballet, modern, tap, jazz, musical stage, hip-hop, and Irish step dance. Performance opportunities are provided by concert performances, informal showings, and students participation in the dance center s youth repertory performance companies. Dance & Company offers additional study for advanced and intermediate students by hosting periodic master classes, guest artist residencies, master teacher workshops, and weeklong choreography intensives with visiting artists. Dance & Company s The Shenandoah Contemporary Dance Theatre, resident, repertory performing company and its preparatory younger affiliate group, offer performance opportunities and pre-professional training to members selected by audition. The SCDT performs regularly in venues such as Kid s Café (NYC), Brooklyn Arts Exchange (NYC) and, The New Dance Festival (VA). SCDT annually hosts The Shenandoah Collaborative Teen Arts Festival. Teaching Philosophy Dance & Company s carefully selected faculty offer a variety of unique talents and teaching styles. Our faculty operates as a team in partnership with one another and families, to provide a positive environment for students to flourish and express themselves artistically. The dance center is closed when Harrisonburg Inclement Weather City Schools close due to inclement weather, including school dismissals for snow, sleet, or ice. Students make up canceled classes by attending alternate classes of similar level offered by the studio. The dance center is not closed when city schools are closed for elections or teacher workdays Pick-up and Delivery Parents or guardians are responsible for a child s arrival and departure from the studio. Accompany your child into the studio. In the event you are late for pick-up, instruct your child to await your arrival in the studio classroom-not an emptying waiting area. Notify attending instructor when departing with your child. Due to the cumulative and participatory nature of classes, Attendance all students are required to attend every class meeting. Excessive absences are not tolerated and may result in dismissal from class. Tuition reductions for absences are not accepted. Students make up classes by attending alternate classes of similar level. Registration for September classes places student in class until June. If a student withdraws, the balance of that quarter s tuition is forfeited. We require written notification of withdrawal in order to remove the student from the class roster for the remainder of the year. Expect to continue receiving tuition bills, unless our office receives written notification of student withdrawal, Students performing in the spring concert are Spring Concert required to purchase a costume. Concert participants must attend all rehearsals for spring concert, held every weekday night prior to concert weekend. Absences place unfair burden on others, and may result in dismissal from cast. Students opting to perform must conform to all rules and procedures concerning concert participation. Dance & Company strives to ensure student needs Instructional Level are met on the appropriate instructional level. Timelines of development are individual to each student. Variance in skill levels among students within the same age range are normal, should be expected, and will peak and plateau throughout the formative years. If initial enrollment indicates a class population presents large discrepancies in performance; teachers balance class instructional challenge to an average which best serves each student on his/her most positive level of instruction. Toward this goal, classes are split into two sections, if the number of enrolled students allows. Current higher functioning students are encourage to advance to classes providing more challenge, and/or curriculum goals are adjusted, within the existing class, to individualize instruction for varying groups and/or individuals

6 Dance & Company Faculty Drew Jones, founder and director of Dance & Company, has taught dance for 37 years. She holds a Bachelors of Education from JMU, where she studied dance on the master s level. She trained privately with Robin Haig, former soloist, Royal Ballet Company, (London) and has studied with the following: Andahazy School of Classical Ballet (St. Paul) with Marius Andahazy, Luba Gulyava and Gabriella Komleva (Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo), Finis Jung (Harkness Ballet), Ted Kevitt and Michelle Lucci (Milwaukee Ballet) and Robert Atwood (Alvin Ailey School) She attended summer intensives with Boulder Ballet, Florida Dance Festival, Somerset Ballet (Kansas City) and Copley Ballet (Boston). Rebecca Berryman, the founder and Director of Tappin Company, trained at the Wilkins School of Dance (Virginia Beach), where she later became a teacher. Rebecca graduated from JMU in Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies with minors in Dance & Early Childhood Education. Rebecca teaches third grade at Peak View Elementary School. Melodie May has danced for over 20 years; first at Dance & Company, where she was a member of the Shenandoah Contemporary Dance Theatre and later at Messiah College. Melodie became Director and Head Choreographer for Acclamation Dance Ministry at Messiah, and taught advanced Modern and Tap classes. Melodie is a former Music and Library Skills teacher at Community Christian School. Eva Robertson trained from childhood at the School of the National Ballet of Canada. Following her training, Eva became a member of the company. Eva later became a member of the American Ballet Theater during which time; she performed as a soloist in numerous roles including Chinese Dance from the Nutcracker, Variations from Paquita, La Bayadere, and Pillar of Fire, among others. Eva has performed as a freelance artist in the Matthew Nash Modern Dance Company. Some of her awards and honors include: Finalist, International Ballet competition. Peter Dyer Award for excellence in ballet, and a Canadian Council for the Arts grant which enabled her to study abroad at the Royal Ballet School, Paris opera Ballet School, Les Ballet De Monte Carlo, The Royal Danish, The Stuttgart Ballet, and numerous other international schools. Karmy Thornley trained at Dance & Company, Center for Dance Education (SC), Columbia Music Festival Association (SC) among other venues for over 19 years. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication/Theatre from Bridgewater College, and recently completed accreditation requirements for the Virginia State teaching certification. She is a former member of SCDT, and now serves as Coordinating Liaison Director for both The Shenandoah Contemporary Dance Theatre Companies. Carly Rahal is Health Sciences Major and a Dance Minor at James Madison University. Before arriving at JMU, Carly was a member of a number of professional and semiprofessional modern, jazz, and hip-hop dance companies. The most recent of which is Coupe Dance Theatre in Nanuet, New York. She has trained with the Knicks, Nets, and Sixers Dancers, for many years. Carly is a member of Mosaic Dance Company and Visual Distortions, at JMU, where she is also a Group Fitness Instructor for University Recreation. Carly is certified to teach dance for fitness in several areas and served as a motivational dancer for DJ evolution Productions, New York. Carly taught numerous full-year and summer classes for years at Steeltoes Dance, her hometown studio, in New York. Earlier, she acted as a Head Camp Counselor for Orangtown Day Camp and a Camp Counselor for Ramaquios Day Camp, both of New York. Rachel Pleasant is Hospitality Management Major at JMU. Rachel is a graduate of Dance & Company, where she is a former five-year member of The Shenandoah Contemporary Dance Theatre, adding to her training in Ballet, Modern, Hip-Hop, and Jazz. During her high school years, Rachel participated in Dance & Company s teacher/student, mentorship, training program, under the supervision of Mary Golden-Hughes and Drew Jones. Emily Marsh began training at Lincolnshire Academy of Dance (Lincolnshire, IL) and Spotlight Performing Arts Academy (Pittsburg, PA). While still in High School, Emily was invited to train in the Dance Major Program at La Roche College (PA). Emily has trained in ballet under Svetlana Novodran (Vaganova Ballet Academy; prima ballerina of the Odessa State Opera Ballet and the National Ballet of Poland) and Gerard Holt (former dancer with the San Francisco Ballet and Pittsburg Ballet Theater). She also received training in Modern, Luigi Jazz, and Tap. Emily studied musical theater dance, voice, and acting at Paragon Studios. Emily s performance career, in ballet, modern and musical theater productions, spans more than a decade. Her featured roles include: The Nutcracker (Clara and The Sugar Plum Fairy), Coppelia (Swanhilda), The Pajama Game, A Chorus Line, and various solo roles created by Gerard Holt. At Paragon Studios, Emily taught multiple classes for which she created and taught annual concert pieces in ballet and musical theater. Marissa Barber grew up at Dance & Company, is a former member of the Shenandoah Contemporary Dance Theatre. She is a former dance major at JMU and attended the Summer Program in Dance in London, England, with JMU s Dance Program (2012). Marissa has studied with Concert Ballet of Virginia, attended Bates Dance Festival (2011), and has worked with numerous choreographers including Kate Waere Company, Karl Rodgers, Shonach Mirk Robles, and more. Claire Gallagher began her dance training at Hart Dance Academy, in Lincoln, NE. at age 4 yrs. Later, she continued her dance studies at Barbara Hammond s School of Dance in Richmond, Va. Her training is primarily in Ballet Arts but also includes experience in Creative Movement and Musical Theater. Claire serves as a peer advisor at JMU. She has participated in a Teach and Train course and loves to teach and learn, in equal measure of exchange, from her tender-aged students. John Gill Seaman trained professionally at The Juilliard School at Lincoln Center. While training, he performed with the following regional companies: New Jersey Classical Ballet, Fokine Ballet, and Atlanta Ballet, among others. He later performed professionally with the Joffrey Ballet, Ballet Melli Iran, London Festival Ballet, National Ballet of Canada (NY Season), and Stuttgart Ballet (NY Season). Though retired from performing, John continues his involvement in the world of ballet through teaching. Emily Fisher trained for 19 years in Northern Virginia in jazz, Tap, Ballet, Lyrical, and modern. She graduated from James Madison University with two Bachelor of Arts degrees in Dance and English as well as earning a teaching license in dance for the Commonwealth of Virginia. She was the recipient of the Dance Faculty Award at JMU and served as Student Technical Director for the Dance Department for the academic year. She has taught modern, ballet, creative movement, jazz, tap, and musical theatre for private studios and public schools throughout Virginia. Emily is incoming Co-Director of The Shenandoah Contemporary Dance Theatre, Senior Company at Dance & Company. She also looks forward to teaching classes in the up-coming year. Hope Gallagher Hope Gallagher is a student at James Madison University, studying Public Relations and Music Industry. Hope started Irish step dancing at age eight at the Boyle School of Irish Dance in Alexandria, VA, and later was a student teacher of all ages and levels. She competed as a solo dancer regionally, nationally, and internationally. She earned a position as an Open Champion dancer, the highest competitive level in 2011, and has competed in prestigious festivals around the world such as the USA Southern Regionals, USA and North American National Championships, and the Irish National Championships. As well as competitive dancing, Hope also enjoyed a long performance career in the Washington D.C. area, including esteemed venues such as DAR Revolution Hall and the White House Christmas Tree. She is so excited to be teaching another year at Dance and Company! Anna St Ours is from Harrisonburg, VA and grew up dancing at Dance & Company, where she was a member of the Shenandoah Contemporary Dance Theatre. From the age of three, she took lessons in a variety of dance styles, including ballet, modern, jazz, musical stage, and hip-hop. Anna went on to study at James Madison University, where she graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in Dance. During her time at JMU, Anna was a member of the Associate Dance Ensemble and the Contemporary Dance Ensemble. She worked with many guest artists and professional dance companies, studying choreography, performance, and technique. Anna s choreography was featured in multiple Student Dance Concerts, the Senior Dance Concert, the Contemporary Dance Concert, and the adjudicated concert during the American College Dance Festival in Currently, Anna is a member of the Harrisonburg Dance Cooperative. Anna began teaching at Dance & Company in 2007
