2 Camp/Conference History 2013 As of ART CAMP- 29 YEARS AT EIU Based out of the Adult and Continuing Education Office and the Art Department This program offers art classes on sculpture, cast and handmade paper, watercolors, and organic abstraction for high school students. Most of the participants will come from Illinois High Schools. They do operate a closed campus for their participants. BADMINTON CAMP- Based out of the Physical Education Department Kevin Hussey 20 YEARS AT EIU Teaches fundamentals for Badminton. Most participants (co-ed) will be athletes from the Midwest. BASEBALL CAMP- Jim Schmitz 15 YEARS AT EIU Teaches fundamentals of Baseball. Most participants (male) will be students from area High School Baseball Teams. BASKETBALL-MENS 30 YEARS AT EIU Teaches fundamentals for basketball and allows for team tournament play. This is where high school basketball teams will come and compete against one another during the summer to prepare for their upcoming seasons. They also hold a 1000 Shots Camp. BASKETBALL-WOMENS- 33 YEARS AT EIU Teaches fundamentals for Basketball. Most participants will be students from area grade school, junior high, and high school teams. BOYS ADVANCED SOCCER TEAM CAMP- Adam Howarth 13 YEARS AT EIU This is a Mens Team Soccer Camp that teaches fundamentals of Soccer. High School Teams from across the state will come and compete against one another.
3 (PREMIER) BOYS STATE- Based out of the American Legion Randy Johnston 39 YEARS AT EIU The Concept of Boys State originated in Illinois and Illinois Boys State is the oldest youth leadership training program in America. The National organization of the American Legion has adopted the plan and it is now in operation in all fifty states. Boys State provides the experience, opportunity and organization to teach young men citizenship and workings of the government. Friendships are developed, new interests are found, and ordinary people begin to do extraordinary things. Camp e3 (Entrepreneurship) Based out of Business Solutions Center Jeanne Dau 4 YEARS Teaches high school students what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur. Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corp Based out of Rosemont, IL Adolph De Grauwe 9 YEARS The Corp is comprised of members from all over the United States. They come to campus to work on their drill for competition. The group is big about holding open rehearsals. Cebrin Goodman Teen Institute Based out of Springfield Illinois Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Association CJ Cavazos First year at EIU The Cebrin Goodman Teen Institute is a national award winning prevention program which emphasizes positive peer influence and helps youth and adults join together to prevent alcohol and other drug use. It is a comprehensive education and training program that promotes positive attitude to improve all areas of life. CIVIL AIR PATROL-Johnson Encampment Based out of Chicago, Illinois Rick Oeth 48 YEARS AT EIU Senior Staff from the Illinois Civil Air Patrol will teach youngsters how to fly gliders, planes, and hot air balloons out at the Coles County Airport. CIVIL AIR PATROL-Nationals Based out of Chicago, Illinois Tom O Shea 12 YEARS AT EIU Senior Staff from the Illinois Civil Air Patrol will teach youngsters how to fly gliders.
4 DISTANCE RUNNING- Erin Howarth 34 YEARS AT EIU Teaches the fundamentals of long distance running. High Schoolers from area track or cross country teams will come and learn more about the methods of long distance running. EVANSVILLE NORTH MARCHING BAND- 17 YEARS AT EIU Based out of Evansville North High School in Evansville, Indiana Steve Shelley The Marching Band from Evansville North High School will come to EIU to learn their marching band show. FOOTBALL CAMP- Tom Kaufman 31 YEARS AT EIU Teaches fundamentals for Football players. Most participants come from area high school football teams. GIRLS STATE- Based out of the American Legion Auxiliary 28 YEARS AT EIU The American Legion Auxiliary believes that training our youth about the basic ideals and principles of our system of government will help to ensure the survival of our republic. Through a unique citizenship training program, Auxiliary members teach the youth of our nation to understand, comprehend, and appreciate their roles as United States citizens. This program is called Girls State. Girls State began as one and two day sessions in the late 1930's and since 1948 has been a regular part of the Auxiliary's Americanism curriculum. The program has grown from a few hundred participants to nearly 25,000 Girls State delegates annually. The Auxiliary has been recognized many times by Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania and the National Association of Secondary School Principles (NASSP) for outstanding Girls State and Girls Nation programs. HERFF JONES Based out of the Midwest Liz Cox 4 YEARS AT EIU This is a yearbook camp that teaches high school students the new trends and best tools of the trade to use when designing year books.
5 HERSCHER MARCHING BAND- Based out of Herscher High School in Herscher, Illinois Rachael Dickman 22 YEARS AT EIU The Marching Band from Herscher High School will come to EIU to learn their marching band show. HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM CAMP (Illinois Press)- Based out of the Student Publications/Journalism Department Joe Gisondi 21 YEARS AT EIU 2 Week Educational program designed for high school students with an interest in journalism. Participants attend various workshops and classes regarding journalism. Participants are usually from Illinois. HIGHLAND MARCHING BAND- Based out of Highland High School in Highland, Illinois Clay Dugger 5 YEATS AT EIU The Marching Band from Highland High School will come to EIU to learn their marching band show. EIU TRACK- Tom Akers 19 YEARS AT EIU Teaches fundamentals of hurdling, pole vault, and the high jump. Most participants will come from area high school track teams. IHSA State Badminton Championship Based out of the IHSA Office in Bloomington, IL 8 YEARS AT EIU EIU hosts the IHSA State Women s Badminton Championships. IHSA STATE TRACK MEETS Based out of the IHSA Office in Bloomington, IL 41 YEARS FOR GIRLS TRACK 40 YEARS FOR BOYS TRACK EIU hosts the IHSA Men s and Women s IHSA State Track Championships. KANKAKEE COMMUNITY COLLEGE UPWARD BOUND- 21 YEARS AT EIU Based out of Kankakee, Illinois Jamal Hawkins This program provides educational opportunities for high school students (mostly juniors and seniors) to help bridge the transition from high school to college. The students will attend classes on campus just like undergraduate students experience during the summer months. Most participants will come from the Kankakee area. KCC hires and provides their own staff. Most of the staff is comprised of students from Eastern Illinois University. Program lasts 2 weeks.
6 LEADERSHIP CAMP- Based out of the Adult and Continuing Education Office & Mona Davenport 28 YEARS AT EIU This is a leadership/college prep camp in which minority students experience college life and participate in activities to develop leadership and communication skills. MARCHING AUXILIARIES- Based out of Dallas, Texas Michael Long 20 YEARS AT EIU Marching Auxiliaries is a national organization that hosts camps across the country. They teach junior high and high school students the skills that are needed to be in a flag corp, marching band color guard, or drum major. METAMORA MARCHING BAND- 34 YEARS AT EIU Based out of Metamora Township High School in Metamora, Illinois Wally Parks The Marching Band from Metamora High School will come to EIU to learn their marching band show. METROPOLITAN FAMILY SERVICES UB Based out of Chicago FIRST YEAR AT EIU The Metropolitan Family Services is an Upward Bound program that brings high school students to EIU for a week during the summer. They let the students experience what it is like to be on a college campus. MINOOKA MARCHING BAND- Based out of Minooka High School in Minooka, Illinois Rick Anderson 24 YEARS AT EIU The Marching Band from Minooka High School will come to EIU to learn their marching band show. MONTICELLO MARCHING BAND- Based out of Monticello High School, Monticello, Illinois Alison Allender 34 YEARS AT EIU The Marching Band from Monticello High School will come to EIU to learn their marching band show.
7 MUSIC CAMPS (2)- Based out of the Music Department Danelle Larson 59 YEARS AT EIU The Music Camps Office in the Music Department provides different music camps during one week in July. Junior High and High School students from across the nation come to learn techniques in percussion, show choir, jazz, vocals, and band. The Music Camps provide their own staff. These camps will also bring in a great deal of faculty or performers that are sometimes famous. MTIEP- Based out of the Educational Department 20 YEARS AT EIU MTIEP stands for the Minority Teacher Identification Enrichment Program. This program helps minority students in creating interest and developing skills and knowledge to become teachers or professors. These students attend many classes and workshops on the subject during a one week program. Participants are usually from the Illinois area. NATIONAL CHEERLEADEING ASSOCIATION- Based out of Dallas, Texas Stefani Lamons 24 YEARS AT EIU NCA is a very popular cheerleading camp which has professional cheerleading staff that teaches cheerleading fundamentals to junior high and high school cheerleaders. This is a national cheerleading camp with camps across the nation throughout the summers. Most of the participants will come from Illinois & Indiana. PEKIN MARCHING BAND- Based out of Pekin, Illinois Karli Oblak 6 YEARS AT EIU The marching band from Pekin High School will come to EIU to learn their marching band show. ROMEOVILLE MARCHING BAND- Based out of Romeoville, Illinois Clark Anderson 19 YEARS AT EIU The Marching Band from Romeoville High School will come to EIU to learn their marching band show. SMITH/WALBRIDGE CLINICS- Based out of Illinois Barry Houser 13 YEARS AT EIU Drum Major, Color Guard, Flag, Rifle, Marching Percussion and Marching Band Leadership Summer Clinics.
8 SOCCER TEAM CAMP-WOMENS- Based out of the Athletic Department 14 YEARS AT EIU Soccer Team Camp for High School Girls Soccer teams to come and learn and compete against one another. Participants are from various high schools across the state of Illinois. SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR HIGHER LEARNING Coordinated by the Student Success Center 2 YEARS AT EIU This program allows seniors in High School to take summer classes at EIU. The individuals will be admitted into EIU pending the completion of this summer program. TENNIS CAMP- Based out of the Athletic Department John Blackburn 12 YEARS AT EIU Two co-ed Tennis Camps designed to help teach the fundamentals of Tennis to junior high and high school students. UNIVERSAL CHEERLEADERS ASSOCIATION/UNIVERSAL DANCE ASSOCIATION 29 YEARS AT EIU Based out of Memphis, Tennessee Peter Michel UCA/UDA is the most popular cheerleading/dance camp which has professional cheerleading & dance staff that teaches cheerleading & dance fundamentals to junior high and high school students. This is an international cheerleading & dance camp with camps across the nation throughout the summers. Most of the participants will come from Illinois. You will see UCA in the Macy s Day Parade every Thanksgiving in New York City. UNIV. OF ILLINOIS UPWARD BOUND- Based out of the Minority Affairs Office at the University of Illinois Dr. Sandra Kato-Wright 18 YEARS AT EIU The University of Illinois Upward Bound will come to EIU for one night to visit the EIU campus. They will also attend campus tours and attend a presentation by our admissions office. VOLLEYBALL CAMPS - Based out of the Athletic Department Kate Price 33 YEARS AT EIU The volleyball camp is geared toward teaching junior high & high school volleyball players more fundamentals of volleyball. WATSEKA HIGH SCHOOL BAND Based out of Watseka, Illinois Erik Parmenter, director 12 YEARS AT EIU The Marching Band from Watseka High School will come to EIU to learn their marching band show.
