We find both unity and diversity by sharing the knowledge, intelligence and humor of past and contemporary writers. Our Guild expands our ability to integrate the world of the written word into our lives and our community. We encourage all ages to find the pleasures of reading, the enjoyment of the spoken word and the growth of perspectives which the written word affords. Our youth are the future thinkers, the past serves as their roadmap; current readers, writers and poets carry the message. *We invite all ages from 6 to 96; exceptions may be made if you bring a note from your parents.* We encourage young writers/poets and everyone to attend! Bring original writings for sharing or just bring yourself. Come early cookies are warm upon arrival and go quickly. Pony rides and hot-air balloon rides will resume as weather permits. Moderator, Greg Wright was born in 1949, a late bloomer baby-boomer. From an early age people said that someone should follow Greg around and write down his insightful and witty observations. Being there were no takers he assumed this yoke of honor himself. Readers have described him as a cross between Dr. Seuss and Sigmund Freud. Therefore, he describes himself as a Seussenfreudian Poet. Since April 4 th, 1999 he has dedicated his writings to Peace, humor and contemplative writing. A big fan of both Rudyard Kipling, Dr. Seuss and his hero, his father, he currently is alive and kicking in Wilmington, Delaware.
2 LIBRARY GILD Evening with the Author: Arden Library Series On Friday April 13 at 7:30 New York Times bestselling author will read selections and sign her newest publication. She revisits the characters from her beloved novels Love Walked In and Belong to Me in this captivating, beautifully written drama involving family, friendship, secrets, sacrifice, courage, and true love for fans of Jojo Moyes, Elin Hilderbrand, and Nancy Thayer. On the weekend of her wedding, Clare Hobbes meets an elderly woman named Edith Herron. During the course of a single conversation, Edith gives Clare the courage to do what she should have done months earlier: break off her engagement to her charming yet overly possessive fiancé. Three weeks later, Clare learns that Edith has died and has given her another gift. Nestled in crepe myrtle and hydrangea and perched at the marshy edge of a bay in a small seaside town in Delaware, Blue Sky House now belongs to Clare. Though the former guest house has been empty for years, Clare feels a deep connection to it. All are welcome. This is not a fee event, but donations would be much appreciated. New books at the Arden Library The bad-ass librarians of Timbuktu: and their race to save the world's most precious manuscripts, by Joshua Hammer. Library Journal (November 1, 2015) In the 1980s, as an archivist working for a Mali government library, Abdel Kader Haidara made his way across the Sahara's sands to rescue tens of thousands of ancient Islamic and secular manuscripts nearly lost to history. In 2012, as al Qaeda militants swarmed through Mali, Haidara directed a team of librarians at the privately funded Mamma Haidara Memorial Library in Timbuktu, who packed more than 350,000 manuscripts into tin boxes and sneaked them out of city to safety in southern Mali. Multi-award-winning journalist/author Hammer, who has been visiting Mali for two decades, tells an absorbing story of librarians as risk-taking heroes, striking a blow for culture Piecing Me Together, by Renee Watson. Booklist (December 1, 2016 (Vol. 113, No. 7)) Grades Who owns the river and the line, and the hook, and the worm? wonders Jade, a scholarship kid at Portland s prestigious St. Francis High. Through her first two years of school, she s had to balance her home life in a poor neighborhood with her life at a school populated mostly by rich white kids. When offered a mentorship for at-risk girls (which includes a full college scholarship), she jumps at the opportunity to learn how to be a successful black woman. However, she soon suspects that her mentor, Maxine, may only have a superficial understanding of Jade s challenges and that there may be things Jade can teach her. Watson is unafraid to show Jade as a young woman who is resilient and mature for her age, but also plagued by self-doubt. The book itself is a balancing act between class, race, and social dynamics, with Watson constantly undercutting stereotypes and showing no fear in portraying virtues along with vices. The book s defiance of a single-issue lens will surely inspire discussion and consideration. Wolf in the Snow, by Matthew Cordell. Kirkus Reviews starred (October 1, 2016) A near-wordless story of kindness repaid. As the book starts, readers see a dark-haired, light-skinned family starting their day. A girl in a red, hooded parka bids goodbye to her dog, and with snow beginning to come down, she s off to school. As it happens, a wolf pack is also on the move. On her way home, the snow has intensified. In a dramatic two-page spread the wolf pack can be seen walking in the girl s direction, clouds of steamy air coming out of mouths filled with pointy teeth. As the girl trudges on, head lowered to the falling snow, and the wolf pack also trudges on, a wolf cub is left behind. Eventually, the girl and the scared, lost cub 2 THE ARDEN CLUB CALENDAR APR 2018
3 LIBRARY GILD CONTINUED meet. Hearing the wolf pack howling in the distance, the girl takes the cub and, facing many perils, reunites cub and pack. Now exhausted and unable to move on, she collapses in the snow. The grateful pack returns favor for favor, and as its members surround and protect the girl, they howl in a call to her family, who has been out looking for her. The last page shows the family warm and safe back home. What distinguishes this book are the many feelings that Cordell s pen-and-ink withwatercolor illustrations capture so well cold, fear, courage, exhaustion, relief keeping readers hooked to the end. Deeply satisfying. (Picture book. 4-8) CONCERT GILD Twisted Pine Saturday, April 7 th, 8 PM $15 (members $12) JUST ADDED Ian Fitzgerald opens the show. New England singer songwriter getting acclaim regionally Twisted Pine's all-original debut album showcases a new force in Americana: four versatile players and singers writing and improvising across forms in bluegrass, folk, funk, jam, and vintage radio pop.
