At the Wheel Gary Heichelbech - Director Hello Dogwoodies! This is my LAST 'At the Wheel' column. It has been a great experience being the Club Director these past three years! I'd like to thank everyone for their input and support! We will announce our new Director and board members at the Holiday Party. Fall color, delicious wine and a Porsche display, oh my! That's what nearly two dozen Dogwoodies experienced during our November Event at Wolf Mountain Winery. After having a quick bite in the town of Dahlonega, the group caravanned up to the winery were they "sampled" some of the fruity spirits and were given an extra treat of being able to view the proprietor's Porsche collection. Luckily the smoke from the forest fires stayed away to make it a breathtaking day! Thanks again to Dan Villeneuve for organizing this great trip! Don't miss our next event, our annual Holiday Party, on Saturday, Dec. 10th. It will be held in Roswell at the awesome home of Steve Caster and Joel Feuer. Our holiday festivities will include a Dogwood buffet (you wont want to miss the desserts!) and a fun Auto Quiz with prizes. Check this newsletter for details and don't forget to RSVP via EVITE by Dec. 4th. Happy Holidays! P.S. Please remember to renew your annual membership! Happy Motoring! Gary Welcome New Members! 4 November Debuts Corey Boyette - Reporter Adding to his eclectic collection of automobiles, Jim Masone debuted the quintessential British sports car in the form of a 1973 MG MGB. The roadster features Glacier White paint and a black leather interior. The engine is a 1.8L 4 cylinder that is fed by Webber side draft carburetors that have been recently rebuilt. Surprisingly for an English car, Jim reports no major oil leaks and no Lucas Prince of Darkness electrical problems. Though the weather was rather chilly, Jim donned proper driving gloves and tooled around with the top down. Cheerio my good man! With the unfortunate demise of Gray Heichelbech and Guy Van Ort s GMC Envoy XUV, Gary needed a reliable, affordable and accessible vehicle to replace it with. He found the perfect solution in his new (to him) 2006 Toyota RAV4 Sport. This low mileage example has AWD and a 4 cylinder option. It is Super White with black interior. The tech includes a CD player and aux jack. While not quite a versatile as the Studebaker Wagonair like Envoy, the RAV4 has plenty a room to carry almost anything, including the kitchen sink. It will serve Gary well for many years to come. New member Mark Pearson s debut is a 2013 Dodge Charger R/T Max. This beautiful car in Ivory white with a racy Rally Red Interior is a special car! It is powered by a 370 hp 5.7 HEMI V8. But don t let that brute of an engine fool you, it can be surprisingly fuel efficient. And what could be more American than a V8, try heated and cooled cup holders. The Max part of its name means its maxed out with all the technology, comfort and convenience features including Beats audio, rain sensing windshield wipers, adaptive cruise control and much more. 4

November Debuts Jeff Harris debuted a drop dead gorgeous 2016 BMW 750i X-Drive. This vehicle is dressed in Black Sapphire paint and Ivory White leather interior. This car is powered by a twin-turbo V8 producing a gut wrenching 445 HP. It features a whole lot of tech like 1400 watts of Bowers & Wilkins sound, a fully customizable LED lighting package and 4 zone climate control. The exterior also features the M packaged adding that extra special look. Dale Klamfoth introduced one sporty new ute, a 2017 Porsche Macan. This is the newest small SUV to the Porsche stable. This particular example is powered by a 2.0L Turbo 4 cylinder good for 252 HP powering all 4 wheels. And those wheels sport optional Turbo Design rims. Dale s Macan has a sunroof and the Bose sound system. The outside is White with a black leather interior. The Macan replaces Dale s 2016 Stingray. Now he can bring along two extra friends - quickly. Needing a companion for his 1990 Camaro IROC-Z, Dan Villeneuve debuted the latest Camaro to his stable in the form of a 2017 Chevrolet Camaro SS 2LT. This particular example is the 50th Anniversary edition. Featuring all the latest safety and infotainment features Chevy has to offer this Camaro s ace up its sleeve is its 455 hp 6.2l V8 mated to an 8 speed transmission. It features a dual mode exhaust for that extra throaty sound when using all of that V8 power. It is in Nightfall Grey with black leather interior. 5

Drive & Wine Terry Bird, Dan Villeneuve - Reporters Terry Bird, Dan Villeneuve, Corey Boyette - Photos Early on Saturday November 12th hardy Dogwoodies braved the morning chill and assembled at the Shell station off of Georgia 400 in Alpharetta. Sandy and his friend Mike drove Monica, his beautiful blue 1975 Cadillac Coupe de Ville: Ken and his friend Dana arrived in a loaner from the Chevrolet dealer: Mark and Bill in their GMC Terrain; Dan was there in his hot new Camaro SS; Corey and Joe drove their Jaguar XJ sedan, Terry drove Hernando, his 1957 DeSoto Shopper wagon; and perhaps the most impressive entrance was the team of Ken with friend Doug in Doug s 1955 Oldsmobile 88 sedan followed by Ken s husband Hector in their 1964 Rambler American 440 convertible with the top down! Hector had the top back up within minutes of arrival, before the photographers could get his picture. From here the group headed northward towards Dahlonega. It was a beautiful fall day and we did get to see some leftover fall color as our caravan headed up highway 9 for a scenic drive to downtown Dahlonega. We then split up and went shopping and had lunch on our own with many ending up at Crimson Moon for lunch. After a hearty meal we gathered up for the trip to Wolf Mountain Vineyards. The handsome guy that event organizer Dan spoke with on Friday met us at the gate with a golf cart and parked a few of our cars in strategic spots for the guests to admire from the balcony of the tasting area. We then went in for a tasting or glass of wine...or two, The bartenders, all around college age/military types were very cute and had everyone drooling so we stayed there around an hour.. and met up with a few more Dogwoodies. A pleasant surprise was a tour of the cars owned by the Wolf Mountain s proprietor. One of his many Porsches was a speedster once owned by singer Olivia Newton-John. Supposedly she wanted crank windows ( not power) so she sold the car and he restored it back to original as she had changed the interior to a non original color. The winery owner didn't believe in the stock market so those were his investments he could enjoy...( he was in his early 70s). After the tour of the cars our group headed for home. Thank you Dan Villeneuve for organizing a great day with about two-dozen club members enjoying the drive, fall colors and wine. 6

In My Opinion Christopher Conway - Editor As this is my last In My Opinion article as newsletter editor, I thought I would reminisce a bit, with a little ranting and raving thrown in for good measure. The Dogwood Region was formed in April 1989 and I joined a few months later. The first event I attended was at a couple s home in Buckhead with everyone parking on the lawn (photo above). Not only did I see some pretty sharp cars, but I met some great people, many are good friends to this day. After a few years I joined the Dogwood board as treasurer. With a few breaks in between I did two stints as membership chairman before volunteering as newsletter editor in Can you tell I like this club? During my first stint as membership chairman in 1993 our region had about 80 members. Through some advertising and recruiting by our members our enrolment rose to almost 200. Though members have come and gone, our membership has remained high, in fact Dogwood has more members than any other region in the Lambda Car Club. One reason for this is we are an active club. We hold two club activities each month, the third Sunday cruise-in and an additional activity that varies month to month. From talking with members of other regions, they are fortunate if they even have one activity every few months! What makes Lambda different from all other car clubs? It s the men and women in the club and the variety of our cars that makes us unique. Lambda allows us to be out and proud and meet and mingle with likeminded people. While many car clubs are more welcoming toward gay members than in the past, holding hands or kissing is usually frowned upon, and a few of our conversations, especially when it comes to sex would make non-gays faint! As a long term member of a Mustang club, I ve seen every variation of Mustang built. While I like them all, I ve think I ve seen them all many times. At almost every Dogwood event I see something new and interesting. Old, new, economy, luxury, muscle, domestic or foreign our collection of cars spans every decade and almost every marque. Our members like to show off and drive their cars, we don t just have trailer queens. I ve ridden in the rumble seat of a 1926 Buick, been chauffeured in a 1964 Imperial Ghia limousine and driven a 1956 Packard Clipper, just a tiny sample of the wonderful vehicles I ve had the pleasure of interacting with through Dogwood. Of course a car club is only as good as the members that participate and run it. While we typically have good event participation, we are often lacking in volunteers to help run the club. My rant is that with our large membership we have a hard time getting people to lend a hand. As I am writing this, after a little arm twisting, one person has expressed interest in being club Director. If this person had not stepped up, Dogwood would cease to exist. As the largest Lambda region that would be shameful. I encourage everyone to make event suggestions and every now and then volunteer to help with a club activity. For my raves, there are a few people in particular that I want to thank in helping me get the newsletter published. Gary and Chip for sending me interesting articles, Donnie and Corey for being debut reporters, and Bill for being my proof reader, usually with a very short deadline. I wish I could name everyone that has helped me out, as there have been many. It has been most appreciated. Though my personal schedule keeps me from continuing as editor, I still plan on participating in club activities. After all, where can I get my car fix and socialize with such a great group of fellow car nuts? 8

How to Handle Parking Lot Accidents By State Farm During the holidays, parking lots at malls and supermarkets are packed, increasing the possibility of a fender bender. If you hit, scrape or otherwise damage a parked car or if you re the victim of such an accident don t panic. Here are some steps you can take: IF YOU RE THE DRIVER Own up. Don t drive away if another customer or a surveillance camera spots you, you could be punished for a hit-and-run. Track down the other car s owner. Head into the store and speak to someone at the customer service desk. Describe the car to the employee, and have him or her announce it over the store s loudspeaker. Leave a note. If you re unable to find the other driver, jot down basic information your name, phone number and a brief explanation of the accident and place it in a secure spot on the car. Write down the license plate number and take a photo of the damage if you have a camera with you. Call the police. Depending on how extensive the damage is, you may want to involve the police. They ll document the accident and they can help you find the other car s owner. IF YOU RE THE VICTIM Contact your Insurance agent. Let him or her know what happened as soon as possible. Your agent will help you determine the next steps. Record evidence. Take pictures of the damage with your phone or a camera, if you have one on hand. Take thorough notes. If the other driver is still around, jot down his or her name, address, phone number, driver s license number and insurance company. Gather as much information as possible. Get backup. Ask others in the parking lot if they witnessed anything. Also head back into the store and find out if they have security camera footage you can check. IF YOU RE THE WITNESS Provide assistance. If the offending driver is gone, help the other driver document the damage. Give the driver your contact information, in case his or her insurance agent or the police need to contact you for further comment. 11
