1/23/ Welcome, Falcon Fans! It s midterms week, but our athletes will still be hard at work on the courts, mats, tracks and in the pool.. No rest for the weary! Students, please consult the schedule below to see where and when you can take a break from studying and go cheer them on. In last week s issue, we overlooked two talented athletes in our wrap-up of the Hartford s All-Courant Team awards. Volleyball players Rachel Carlson and Audrey Worth were named All-Courant Honorable Mentions. Our apologies to Rachel, Audrey and their families for the oversight. Congratulations, girls! This weekend, we made up for Ice Hockey s canceled Spirit Week game by converging on Avon Old Farms rink, Saturday night. A Booster Club-sponsored fan bus transported dozens of red, white and blue-decked fans to the 8:00 game where they dominated the stands and cheered on our players to an heroic 5-4 win over powerhouse Glastonbury. Photos can be seen further along in this issue. Lastly, the Booster Club will accept team capital disbursement requests for one more week. All requests are due by January 31st. For details and forms, please click here. GO FALCONS! 3 WINTER CONTACTS Sport Head Coach & Team Rep & Captains Boys Basketball Kris Pedra Holly Zacchio Robby Zacchio, Charlie Reiss, and Jordan Williams Girls Basketball Jamaal Lee Jennifer Jeandell Marita Galligher, Lauren Jeandell, Heather McGuire, and Olivia Donahue Wrestling John McLaughlin Cheryl Edwards Blake Edwards, Mike Lancaster, and Alec Wyatt Swimming & Diving Diana Cesaro Susie Downey Annie Hayes, Kyle Emery, Sarah Preleski, Brendan Downey, Sam Johnson, and Jared Culbertson Ice Hockey Scott Percival Fawn Murray Peter Hoffman, Danny Shayler, Timothy Arena, Sam Buchanan Cheerleading Nancy Deschenes Bonnie Burns Boys Indoor Track Courtney Fusco Diane Oberhausen No official captains (Seniors) Girls Indoor Track Al Dadario Diane Oberhausen No official captains (Seniors) Four years ago, parent, para-educator, and former Booster Club President, Maria Mascoli, saw a an opportunity to enhance Avon High s Adaptive Physical Education athletics program: It was great that the school s physically and intellectually challenged students got to play team sports (in partnership with their peers from Farmington High School) but, because the program took place at FHS, they never got to play on their home turf, in front of their AHS classmates and friends. That all changed with the introduction of For the Love of the Game, Avon High School s all-abilities showcase event. With the support of coaches, athletes and the Booster Club, Mascoli organized the first For the Love of the Game in 2012, partnering
varsity athletes with special-needs athletes on mixed gender, mixed ability teams. It s an annual tradition now, and a big hit with all of the athletes and their many fans. At this weekend s fourth annual For the Love of the Game event, fans were treated to some exciting court action including 5th grader Aidan Piehl s steals, Meghan Morrison s dogged determination at the free throw line, Jon Shaw s fierce defense, and Carlos V s precision shooting. But, even more exciting (to this fan, anyway) was seeing the joyful camaraderie on the court, and the prideful expressions of the athletes. Meghan is cheered on by the AHS girls varsity players at the free throw line, while Aidan prepares for the rebound.
Meghan follows through on her free shot.
Carlos sinks one of his many shots
Aidan shoots from the outside, while Carlos defends. Johnny, defended by Aidan, swooshes a tough angle shot.
The whole crew, post-game. Final score The Booster Club is accepting capital funding requests for school year right now and through January 31st. In just the past five years, we have invested over $100,000 in gear and resources for Falcon teams - things like training equipment, storage units, scoreboards, cameras, seating, and much more. Coaches and team reps with wish list items they would like to see funded, can click here to read our policy and download the disbursement request form. Please note: - Requests are due by January 31st - Coaches and/or team reps will make their request presentations at our February meeting (Monday, 2/13 at 7:30 p.m.) - Member Voting will take place at our March meeting (Monday, 3/13 at 7:30 p.m.). The Collinsville Press posted a wonderful story about Avon High School s For the Love of the Game event on Saturday, January 21st. You can read about it here.
WFSB was at the multi-team Wrestling match on January 20th! Click here to read all about it. The C ville Press posted a piece just today about the co-ed Indoor Track team s stellar performance at both the NCCC and Haddam-Killingworth Invitationals this weekend. Read all about it here. Our reporters caught the action at the Farmington Valley Generals thrilling 5-4 win against Glastonbury on the ice at the Avon Old Farms rink on Saturday night. Fans (below) dressed in red, white and blue to cheer on their Avon classmates, and the other players on the team (which is a multi-town cooperative) from Farmington, Burlington and Windsor. Photos: Avon fans dominated the stands and cheered the hockey team (pictured below, post-win) to victory!
