1 "You don't stop playing because you grow old; you grow old because you stop playing! " March 2016 "The BATTER UP" Newsletter is published for the Sun Cities Senior Softball Clubs, and is made possible through the generosity of our sponsors. Lorali Holt Editor WHO'S ON DECK? SUN CITIES NATIONAL LEAGUE WELCOMES KIT NIELSEN ~ Lorali Holt ~ Kit Nielsen was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, on January 30 th, 1956, and is proud of the fact that she just turned 60 years old. She spent most of her childhood and school years in the small town of Wildwood, just outside of Edmonton with her parents, five sisters and two brothers. Her parents will be celebrating their 66th wedding anniversary this July. Kit was very active in school sports and was willing to try everything. She played volleyball, badminton, basketball, participated in track and field events, and as she said, enjoyed playing anything that involved using a ball. Kit told me that if I could be outside, I was outside. After leaving school, Kit attended university, met Murray, her husband of 37 years, and started her career in the banking industry. Kit and Murray have two daughters, Lori and Lisa, and are the proud grandparents of two grandchildren, ages 6 and 7. Lori and Lisa are both teachers in the Calgary area. Kit had retired from banking 14 years ago, but finding herself with nothing to do she began working in the jewelry business and retired from that 4 years ago. Again, with time on her hands, Kit decided to get back in shape and do something for myself, so she joined a 55+ track team and began training for her first senior games. Kit s goal was to qualify for the Canada Games, which are held every two years. Not only did she qualify, but she won all of her events while competing at the games. The Nielsens had always planned on becoming snowbirds, but with the encouragement of their family, they finally made the decision to begin wintering in the Sun City area three years ago. Baseball has always been a big part of the Nielsen s life. Murray is an avid baseball player and competed in the 35+ World Series of Baseball, so coming south made a lot of sense. Kit and Murray are welcomed additions to the Long Realty coed team, and Kit is a valuable member of her national league team, Pruitt s Furniture. She is known for both her speed and also for her outstanding defensive play. Her strong arm and quick reflexes makes her a natural for both infield and outfield play. In addition to softball, Kit loves playing golf, gardening, reading, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. ~~Happy Camp~~ Liberty Field March 14 th, 21 st, & 28 5:45 More details inside INSIDE THIS ISSUE Angels in the Outfield.... p 3 Calendar of Events p 3 Hall Of Fame... p 2 Happy Camp p 1,2 Hot Flashes - Women's Softball.. p 2 Sponsors p 5 Tin Cup..... p 6 Trivia Time.... p 4 Who's On Deck?... p 1 Word Search Puzzle.... p 4 Word Search Puzzle Solution.. p 2 You Make The Call.... p 2
