3 Batter Up The Sun Cities Senior Softball Newsletter November SOFTBALL HEAVEN WHERE S YOUR BAT? Submitted by Bob Williams Two 90-year-old women, Rose and Barb, had been friends all of their lives. When it was clear that Rose was dying, Barb visited her every day. One day Barb said, Rose, we both loved playing women s softball all our lives, and we played all through High School. Please do me one favor: when you get to Heaven, somehow you must let me know if there s women s softball there. Rose looked up at Barb from her death bed and said, Barb, you ve been my best friend for many years. If it s at all possible, I ll do this favor for you. Dennis Farrar It s been brought to my attention that some of the players have been putting bats on the package tray in the back window of their car. Maybe they are trying to warm up their bat before the game? However, driving your car with a bat in the back window can be fatal! If you quickly slam on your brakes or have an accident that bat in your back window would become a missile that potentially could kill you. Please think safety both on, and off the field. Reprint.. SCW GENERAL MEETING Shortly after that, Rose passed on. At midnight the following Friday, Barb was awakened from a sound sleep by a blinding flash of white light and a voice calling out to her, Barb, Barb. Who is it? asked Barb, sitting up suddenly. Who is it? Barb -- it s me, Rose. You re not Rose. Rose just died. I m telling you, it s me, Rose, insisted the voice. Rose! Where are you? In Heaven, replied Rose. I have some really good news and a little bad news. Tell me the good news first, said Barb. The good news, Rose said, is that there s Softball in Heaven. Better yet, all of our old buddies who died before us are here, too. Better than that, we re all young again. Better still, it s always springtime, and it never rains or snows. And best of all, we can play softball all we want, and we never get tired. That s fantastic, said Barb. It s beyond my wildest dreams! So what s the bad news You re pitching Tuesday. Life is short... So Remember to Live Well & Laugh Often! Editor s Note: This is a reprint from a previous Batter Up Newsletter with different characters, but still funny. Enjoy! Page 3 of 8 Art Nelson Just a reminder November 12th General membership meeting. The agenda will be about misters, Flag poles Vintage baseball, Tin cup and the up coming elections. It is your club get involved.

DENNIS VISITS PIEDRA FALLS IN COLORADO DURING THE SUMMER WHAT DID YOU DO THIS SUMMER? Dexter & Cherie Yard meet up with Dennis Farrar in Bayfield, Colorado while Dennis was on his annual Square Dance calling tour. This is one of many pictures we all took while visiting Piedra Falls just north of Pagosa Springs, CO. A short hike but a must see if you re in the area. Right: Here is Dennis standing on the ledge with part of the falls pictured in the background. You will find Dennis sporting his Sun City West Softball T-shirt most anywhere. Even in Colorado. 5 DOCTOR S IN Sore muscles from getting back into play???? Dr. Terese Farrar Welcome back! Just a few reminders to help you transition from the summer of fun elsewhere or to help those new members to avoid being side lined by injuries. Stretch out, warm up, and use a Dr. Terese Farrar mustard soak of two tablespoons dry mustard in a tub of hot water for 20 minutes to reduce those aches and pains from asking your muscles to do more than they have for awhile. If these measures are not enough because you tore the blood vessel and it leaked out to the surface so you are black and blue you have a couple of options. One is to increase the Vitamin C that has bio-flavinoids along with it by ingesting it, but you can also smack it up and make a paste to put on the area as well. We do carry a product at the office that will do the job well. Second you could get ultrasound with electrical stimulation that will go deeper than any massage and do a better job as it won t increase the pain. There is also acupuncture and chiropractic available. I m here to help you remain in the game and on the field. If you have any questions about what I can do for you just ask Bill McKenna and call the office should you need help SUN CITIES SOFTBALL LEAGUE Mike Hester, League President By the time you are reading this message we will have started playing ball again. Let s have fun and try to be safe out there! As we start a new season I want to thank the American League Committee (Greg Owens) and National League Committee (Rich McAndrews) for all the hard work in preparing for the new season. Under their leadership much work has been completed to try to insure we have a good draft and work towards parity among all teams. Without this committee s work we would not be where we are today. Also some new rules are in place for the American league and we have adopted a new ball for play in both leagues, which will be phased in as the league progresses. Also please welcome all the new players on your teams and make them feel welcome. We must continue to recruit new players if we are to grow our league. Welcome back to all and let s play ball! 6 LEAGUE BOARD APPROVES MAJOR OPERATIONAL CHANGE Gregg Owens The American League Committee has been replaced by several committees: The American League Placement Committee comprised of Bob Dobbins, Ron Power, Wayne Conn and Ron Johnson with Gregg Owens as the representative from the league board. The American League Committee for Manager selection comprised of Dick Lemoine and Linda Graham. The American League Rules Committee comprised of Bob Brain, Bob Wenners, and John Collins with Tex Wells as the representative from the league board. In addition, two other committees were established that service both leagues. The Data Committee comprised of Mike Graham and Loran Swanson was established to provide data to support both leagues and other groups like the Angels in the Outfield. The League sponsor committee comprised of Len Wicketts and Carol Bowden was established to keep track of current and potential sponsors from both cities. As a result of these changes more people are involved. If you would enjoy serving on one of these committees let a Board member know and we will maintain a list of those interested. NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE Mike Hester, League President If you have uniforms which we will no longer be using and have approval from your sponsor to donate to our armed forces please bring them to the SCW Field by 11/4 and we will get them to Luke Airforce Base for delivery overseas. Also, for all of you that have been saving tab tops during the summer please bring to the SCW Field next week and we will donate to Ronald McDonald for their use, and many thanks. AS I SEE IT! Dennis Farrar With the printing of this month s newsletter I m sure it will find most of us ball players back in the dugouts. There are a few stragglers still in route and more to come back after the holidays. I hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable summer. As you can see by the pictures I put on page 4 of this issue one of my many stops was in Colorado. My long time friends Louis & Judy Norton and I met up with someone you ve seen on the field many times. Dexter Yard and his wife Cherie. The five us were escorted on a day trip to Piedra Falls which is north of Pagosa Springs in the mountains. We cooked hamburgers on the tailgate of Louis s pickup and enjoyed each others friendship. When you see Dexter ask him to do his cow call for you. On the way home Dexter and his infamous cow call had a few cows stirring up that started walking towards our truck. This was really funny. It was one of the highlights of the trip. Of course, like I mentioned in last month s newsletter I really enjoyed spending 6 weeks of my summer with my daughter, son-in-law, and spoiling my precious granddaughters. I sure most of you have had a chance to do this one. I m glad to be back on the field to play ball. I played and managed a team in the third session but it seems like months since I ve swung a bat. It s going to be great to get back at it again and have the chance to renew the old friendships and make new ones with the new ball players that have joined since last spring. Finally, my wife Terese and I would like to wish all of you and your families a bountiful Thanksgiving and to remember those in your prayers who are not so blessed and who have challenges during the holiday season that s upon us. Also please keep those service men and women who serve us in the armed forces, both abroad and here in our home land in your prayers this Veteran s Day. Our freedom is never free. Some of us have to pay the price. So when you see a vet, please thank them for serving all of us. That s how I see it. Have a great game and get home safe. Editor Page 6 of 8

7 THANK YOU SPONSORS WE SUPPORT YOU! A Thank You to all of our wonderful sponsors who have continued to sponsor our recreation! Threw your ongoing support our league would not exist as we know it.
