1 Volume XXVII, Number 4 THE PRESIDENT S MESSAGE by John & Barbara Marshall Has it been hot enough for you? Summer is here, and the dancing has also been hot. Several of our members have been traveling to various dance festivals and weekends. During June we went to the AACE convention held in Milwaukee, WI. We counted 3 ½ squares from Trailblazers that attended and about 1 square from PACE. We all had a great time dancing to all of the calling staff. The staff includes: Sandie Bryant, Vic Ceder, Barry Clasper, Ross Howell, Mike Jacobs, Lee Kopman and Anne Uebelacker. The featured guest caller for this year was Todd Fellogy. Next year the featured guest caller will be John Marshall. The 2009 AACE will also be in Milwaukee. This was the third time we have danced in Milwaukee during June, and I must say that the weather was perfect with no humidity to speak of. Those of you who haven t been to the AACE convention are missing out on a lot of fun. The plan is that for the Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning sessions; a call or concept is worked at each level and then reemphasized in the later sessions using different ways that the calls/concept can be used. I believe that this was true for the A2, C1, C2, C3A, and C3B halls. There was also a C4 hall that only danced part of the time. For the upcoming August Trailblazer dance, Darryl Lipscomb asked to be replaced. Due to military scheduling reasons, his son moved his weding to the same weekend that Darryl was scheduled to call for us. We will miss his calling this year, but we have him scheduled for our August 2009 dance. He suggested that we contact Tim Ploch from Houston, TX. Tim hasn t been traveling too much lately because his law practice in Houston takes up most of his time. He comes highly recommended by Darryl, several other callers (Continued on page 3) Aug 1, 2, 3 Sep 5, 6, 7 Oct. 3, 4, 5 Oct. 31 Nov. 1, 2 Dec. 1, 2 & 3 Jan Feb. 7-8 Mar. 7-8 Caller Quotes Ross Howell Scoop er up Do I keep giving the heads the wrong partner? Which John? Are there 3 boys in that line? I was just wondering because there are 3 girls in the other line. Well, that went well! Would you like to try that again? And you all have right hands, and of course you also have lefties. 3 Page 3 TRAILBLAZER (Continued from page 1) and dancers. It is always nice to have the opportunity to dance with someone that we haven t danced to before. Our club is committed to continue hiring national level callers. Several callers we have booked in the past have either retired or passed on. Because Trailblazers normally dance 11 to 12 times a year; we want to continue to keep our options open. There are always emergencies that can come up, and we want to be prepared for these circumstances. Several members and guests have expressed a concern about refreshments. Some would like to contribute, but either do not have the time or the knowledge to prepare something. We thought that we would have a piggy bank for those who wish to contribute for this purpose. It is always okay for anyone to bring goodies or whatever to help our club. As most of you know, the club has decided to contribute water and coffee only. Barbara Shimomura is our 3 rd Vice President and is responsible for coordinating the refreshments. She has done an outstanding job, so your continued support is greatly appreciated. Barbara and I will be taking an Alaskan cruise in late September. We plan on taking Amtrak to Seattle, enjoy the ship cruise to Alaska, dock back in Seattle, and then fly back home. Last year we went to my 50 th high school reunion and became reacquainted with some fellow schoolmates. Some of us decided to take this Alaskan cruise together. Unfortunately, none of these people square dance, so we will just have to wing it for something to do. Several communities have open air concerts during the summer months. Barbara and I went to the Glendora Finkbiner Park on Sunday evening, July 20 th and saw the Wise Guys Big Band Machine 18 piece band. Their repertoire included music from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bobby Darin, and Peggy Lee, swing, jazz, Latin and big band standards. You might want to checkout the parks in your local area. The concerts usually are free and well worth the effort. Finally, the Trailblazers Board met to determine the dance format and times beginning with our January dance. The decision was based on the statistics gathered from the cards that were filed out by dancers. It was not an easy process, and unfortunately we cannot please everybody. We will be dancing on Saturday and Sunday only, with no evening sessions on Trailblazer weekends, that is to say, the 1 st Saturday of each month that does not include a holiday during the weekend. For Saturday: C1 11:00am to 1:30pm 1 Star Tip C2 last tip A2 2:30pm to 5:00pm 1 Star Tip C1 last tip For Sunday: C2 11:00 am to 1:30pm No Star Tip C3A 2:30 pm to 5:00pm 1 Star Tip C3B last tip We wanted to keep the same times for both Saturday and Sunday. In addition as previously discussed, we wanted to end the Sunday session early enough so that the caller can catch a return flight at a reasonable time. I picked up this quote from a morning TV News show and I thought it was appropriate for the square dance community. TODAY S RELATIONSHIPS: COUPLES WHO PLAY TOGETHER; STAY TOGETHER. Hope to see you in a square soon. Editors note: the fine graphic representations have been removed for reduction in space. The complete file is available on Four Calls from Unusual Setups Sue Curtis, Sharon, MA Trailblazers Workshop, February 2008 Introduction This workshop focuses on doing certain calls from unusual setups. The calls I use are Acey Deucey, Horseshoe Turn, Load the Boat, and Pass and Roll. These calls are interesting because they have different parts for the centers and ends. Often, both the centers' and ends' parts can be done from several different setups. This gives us quite a variety of overall starting setups for the call. Acey Deucey The definition is simple: Centers Trade and the Ends (or Outsides) Circulate. The centers can be in a wave (or line) or box. The ends can be any place they can do a Circulate; the setup might feel like lines or columns. The examples that seem to be the hardest for people are from setups in which the centers are in a wave (or line), rather than a box. Example 1. Acey Deucey from diamonds In this example, dancers are often tempted to do a 6 By 2 Acey Deucey instead (doing Very Centers Trade, rather than having all of the centers Trade. Be careful not to make this mistake! Here are some other examples where the same temptation arises. Example 2. Acey Deucey from a 3/4 tag Example 3. Acey Deucey from an I (Continued on page 5)

5 Page 5 TRAILBLAZER (Continued from page 1) Are you guys getting close back there? It s probably not legal, but at my age, who cares! Seven to the middle and back! Recycle him; he needs it. Who said Its over, I ve got the mic. It ain t over until I say so. Is the sound making it back there okay? I ll try it again this time in English. We have the salmon swimming upstream. I think there was a plus call in there somewhere. Right & left grand, in most cases. I don t have enough time to explain it right now. It s courtesy turn, not molest! What the hell happened to that square? That s an illegal Yellow Rock over there. Girls, flip a coin, the loser gets John. I don t do mornings. Does anybody know exactly what time I lost control? A2 Workshop Material Ross Howell Acey Ducey from a diamond starting formation Remember you cannot roll if you are moving straight forward, or laterally Anything and roll; Mix and roll, Peel & Trail & roll, Walk N Dodge & roll (can t roll), A2 Workshop Material Vic Ceder The May 2008 Trailblazer A2 workshop was on T-Bones. Specifically, the workshop was designed into 4 sections: 1) Circulates: including Split Circulate and 1/2 Circulate; 2) Non-Shape changers, mostly 2x2 to 2x2 such as Walk & Dodge, Split Counter Rotate, Chase Right 3) Shape-Changers: Crossfire from Facing Diamonds, T- Bone Peel & Trails, Follow Your Neighbor, etc. 4) Other miscellaneous stuff (Continued from page 3) Horseshoe Turn As in the previous call, the definition is simple: Centers Partner Tag and the Ends (or Outsides) Cloverleaf. However, many callers only use this call from a completed double pass thru setup. When I call it from other setups (particularly those where the centers have a wave or line), dancers are often confused. Example 4. Horseshoe Turn from a 3/4 Tag Remember that any pair of adjacent dancers can do a Partner Tag; it doesn't matter whether the centers are in a box, line, or wave. After doing the Partner Tag, finish directly back-to-back with the person you were working with. Example 5. Horseshoe Turn from an I Load the Boat Most dancers can do Load the Boat very well as long as the call starts from lines facing in. Here are some additional setups that might cause a little more trouble. Example 6. Load the Boat from a tidal wave If you get confused, just rear back from your tidal wave, and you will see lines facing in. In practice, the ends usually get this right but the centers often have difficulty doing the 1/4 Out after Passing Thru from the wave. Example 7. Load the Boat with ends facing out Remember that the ends must pass 3 people and then face in. It will feel like you are going further than you normally do. When we combine the above two ideas, we can get quite a wide variety of starting setups! Example 8. Load the Boat from diamonds Example 9. Another Load the Boat from diamonds THE ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS WILL BE ARRIVING SOON! Trailblazers will be selling the Entertainment 2009 books to help pay for the operating costs for the club and help continue bringing you outstanding national level callers. The Entertainment 2009 is packed with money-saving coupons for dining out, travel, entertainment, shopping and much more. You ll not only save a lot of money with Entertainment 2009, you ll also help the club. The books are scheduled to ship the week of August 25, 2008, so they should be available at the September 5-7 dance weekend. The editions that we plan to have available will be: (Continued on page 6) Edition Price (each) Orange County $35 West Los Angeles/Long Beach $25 San Fernando Valley $20 San Gabriel Valley $20 San Diego $40 Inland Empire $20 Las Vegas $20 Please contact John or Barbara or rule78@sprintmail.com, as soon as possible, if you have special volume orders or need us to obtain books for other areas within CA or for other states.

6 Page 6 TRAILBLAZER (Continued from page 5) Pass and Roll Most dancers can do Pass and Roll correctly as long as it starts from an eight chain thru setup. An alternative, which seems to make the call somewhat harder, is to start the call from a right-hand box. This doesn't sound hard on paper: just rear back from your box to make an eight chain thru setup. Many dancers can in fact do the call correctly as long as the two boxes are side-by-side, forming right-hand waves. Would you do Pass and Roll correctly from right-hand columns? Example 10. Pass and Roll from columns Rear Back After Entire Call This setup is confusing because dancers are trained to look for their 1x4 column when doing a Pass and Roll. I've even seen dancers turn around to make an eight chain thru setup in order to do this call. However, Pass and Roll really can be done from right-hand columns: just focus on your box instead of your column of four, and rear back first. I like to use the method \Touch, Scoot Back, and Box Circulate" for Pass and Roll. If you use this method, then Pass and Roll from a box just starts with a Scoot Back. For those of you who dance C1, think about doing Pass and Roll from your blocks. Example 11. In Your Block, Pass and Roll Final Comments To do the examples in this workshop correctly on the dance floor, you must do two things. First, think carefully about the definition. If the definition says Centers Trade or Centers Partner Tag, make sure you have all the centers involved, not just the very centers. Second, be aware that any call that starts with a Pass Thru or Pull By can be done from right-hand waves (or in some cases, right-hand columns). If you're expecting a column of 4, the call may be done from a box. Through the eyes of a child? In the beginning, which occurred near the start, there was nothing but God, darkness, and some gas. The Bible says, 'The Lord thy God is one, but I think He must be a lot older than that. Anyway, God said, 'Give me a light!' and someone did. Then God made the world. He split the Adam and made Eve. Adam and Eve were naked, but they weren't embarrassed because mirrors hadn't been invented yet. Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating one bad apple, so they were driven from the Garden of Eden. Not sure what they were driven in though, because they didn't have cars. Adam and Eve had a son, Cain, who hated his brother as long as he was Abel. Pretty soon all of the early people died off, except for Methuselah, who lived to be like a million or something. One of the next important people was Noah, who was a good guy, but one of his kids was kind of a Ham. Noah built a large boat and put his family and some animals on it. He asked some other people to join him, but they said they would have to take a rain check. After Noah came Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Jacob was more famous than his brother, Esau, because Esau sold Jacob his birthmark in exchange for some pot roast. Jacob had a son named Joseph who wore a really loud sports coat. Another important Bible guy is Moses, whose real name was Charlton Hesston; He led the Israel Lights out of Egypt and away from the evil Pharaoh after God sent ten plagues on Pharaoh's people. These plagues included frogs, mice, lice, bowels, and no cable. God fed the Israel Lights every day with manicotti. Then he gave them His Top Ten Commandments. These include don't lie, cheat, smoke, dance, or covet your neighbor's stuff. Oh, yeah, I just thought of one more: Humor thy father and thy mother. One of Moses' best helpers was Joshua who was the first Bible guy to use spies. Joshua fought the battle of Geritol and the fence fell over on the town. After Joshua came David He got to be king by killing a giant with a slingshot. He had a son named Solomon who had about 300 wives and 500 porcupines. My teacher says he was wise, but that doesn't sound very wise to me. After Solomon there were a bunch of major league prophets. One of these was Jonah, who was swallowed by a big whale and then barfed upon the shore. There were also some minor league prophets, but I guess we don't have to worry about them. After the Old Testament came the New Testament. Jesus is the star of the New Testament. He was born in Bethlehem in a barn. (I wish I had been born in a barn, too, because my mom is always saying to me, 'Close the door! Were you born in a barn?' It would be nice to say, 'As a matter of fact, I was.') During His life, Jesus had many arguments with sinners like the Pharisees and the Democrats. Jesus also had twelve opossums. The worst one was Judas Asparagus. Judas was so evil that they named a terrible vegetable after him. Jesus was a great man. He healed many leopards and even preached to some Germans on the Mount. But all those guys put Jesus on trial before Pontius the Pilot. Pilot didn't stick up for Jesus. He just washed his hands instead. Anyway's, Jesus died for our sins, then came back to life again. He went up to Heaven but will be back at the end of the Aluminum. His return is foretold in the book of Revolution.
