4 Page 4 David Yamasaki Pat on the Back Pat Roberts Columnist Well, friends, what do you think you know about David? I learned a lot about this friendly and capable dancer. He shares his story: I am a native-born resident of Orange County. Born in Santa Ana, moved to Stanton when I was very young, and then to Anaheim, where I have lived ever since. Educated in local schools, I achieved an A.A. from Cypress College and a B.A. from Pepperdine University in Malibu. I went to work for Sears at one of their service centers located in Buena Park which is where I first heard of square dancing. In the fall of 1978, someone put up a flier advertising a square dance class in nearby Orange. It turned out that the instructor was a tech supervisor where I worked whom I knew. I did not know he was a caller much less a square dancer. I had been looking for new activities and meeting new people, so I decided to go. I got sucked into what has become a 40-year passion for square dancing. The club I started with, the Shirts n Skirts, had just moved from Norwalk to Orange County but lost half of its membership in the move and had to rebuild. S ns was left with around 35 members and a bare treasury. It struggled for the first few years, before growing in the 1980's and 1990's into quite a club. I started going to workshops called by Bob Johnston and Bob Cottington. I was a regular angel at the classes and club workshops... making many friends and enjoying lots of good times and memories along the way. I became well known for frequently bringing my camera and taking hundreds of pictures which were crammed into several volumes of photo albums. Among my favorite memories are trips with a bunch of fellow club members to Hawaii and another to a dude ranch in Colorado. Several club members and I were involved in a group called the Rat Pack. Some of our activities included: covering the front doors of hotel rooms with newspapers; hiding and leaving loose tickets in other people's houses; among other deeds. One time, I found the front of my car was jacked up when I could not go into reverse. Another time I was stuck with a blow-up doll at one of our White Elephant Christmas parties! That doll wasn t much of a partner. Along the way I served in a variety of jobs with the club: Visitation Chairman for several years; Secretary; South Coast Association Representative; and Sheriff. I also started and did the club's newsletter. In 1995, a friend of mine told me about some caller named Romney Tannehill who was starting an A1 class. I had been told negative stories about Advanced dancers being (continued next page)

5 Page 5 David Yamasaki (continued from page 4) snobbish. But I thought that maybe I had become too smug and too comfortable in my own dancing. (I had been dancing Plus for 16 years; I was overdue for a change.) So, I went to my first Advanced class. My journey through A1 and A2 between 1995 and 2001, took me through Romney's dances, workshops, and weekends. Then there was my entrance into Trailblazers. I heard about Trailblazers, but I was intimidated because I had heard of how good the dancers were and the level was so high. Other dancers I knew went to their dances and became members, so I figured I might as well start going. The first dance I went to, was on Saturday afternoon. Later that same night, I went to a Plus dance visitation with my club. It just was not the same. And I ve stayed with Trailblazers ever since! (Shortly thereafter, then- President Sheldon Raizes gave me an application to join.) Realizing that I was thought of as Trailblazer material gave me a good feeling... and still does. Dancing continued with Marty Firstenburg's workshops, Fun-Wuns, Scrambled 8's, and B Sharps. My then-square Dance partner, Barbara Lane, and I ran the front desk at the Scrambled 8's dances when Romney took over their dances. Weekends were spent doing Advanced... at the A Sq D Jamboree in Oxnard, Bakersfield Fiesta (25 in all), King City, and Lee Kopman weekends in Henderson, Nevada. It was a wonderful dance schedule. Speaking of Bakersfield, I remember fun times at the final session on Sunday in the Advanced Hall, where some of us would purposely square up in all-male or all-female squares, or when half the square would be males as couples and the other half with females as couples, or squares where we would all be half-sashayed. And sometimes, we would switch couples from square to square at designated points during a tip. We were tricksters having a good time. Then around 2000, a certain couple wanted to take a crash-course in C1, so they could go to a C1 event. So, a group of us traveled to places like Altadena and the Valley for a private crash course. I got hooked again... only this time into Challenge. I took classes with Frank Lescrenier, Patricia Wahle, and George Monaghan, with further education from Craig Shucker. In 2005, I went into C2; thanks to Frank and George, and began going to Phantom Squares and PACE, while also attending workshops at Paul Freeman's home in Midway City, and Martin Hall South. At the end of George's C2 class, he announced that he would be holding a C3A class, and after that he would probably leave the area. Well, it was take advantage of the opportunity. There was no way of knowing when there would be another one. So off to C3A I went. And that s where I am now. PACE dances and the Extravaganza became part of my schedule. I was attending Paul Freeman's C3A group, which became (continued next page)

6 Page 6 David Yamasaki (continued from page 5) Andrea Weinberg's tape group in Rossmoor. And when Andrea moved away, it became what is now Jane Clewe's group in Tustin, where I still attend. Along the way, I have been blessed by dancing with some terrific Square Dance partners: at first I was with Barbara Lane, and now with my current frequent Square Dance partner, Barbara Shimomura. I will always be grateful for partnering up with capable and charming women such as these. My 40-year journey through square dancing has led me through different levels, which meant new vistas, new dimensions, and new experiences even up to now. I love to dance with other dancers where we all share the same passion. That passion is to stay focused, to do our jobs as dancers by doing our part of the calls, to work in conjunction with each other, and help each other when the need arises. Everyone brings something to the table to keep the square going. The fun builds up during the tip David & Dance Partner Barbara Shimomura resulting in a pleasant experience. This is because all eight dancers in a square are pulling their individual abilities together into working as a team. I am also a firm believer in quality square dancing, and that those who are passionate also pursue quality...not to act as snobs or know-it-alls, but dancers who enjoy good square dance choreography. We are just people who want something different and challenging, and we all work together to get through the sequences. This makes Challenge dancing an enjoyable physical and mental exercise. It is always a pleasure dancing with David in tips. As we struggle through some sequences, you will hear him murmur, There we go. His encouraging phrase brings a smile and confidence to the square. [A BIG Pat on the Back to David for contributing this article... and being a passionate Trailblazer.] Pat
