1 June/ July 2008 Volume XXVII, Number 3 THE PRESIDENT S MES- SAGE by John & Barbara Marshall Summer is almost here? The week of 5/19 I was attending a business conference in Las Vegas where the temperatures averaged 108 degrees during the day and about 105 degrees during the evening. Upon returning home the temperatures were much cooler. On Thursday we were hit with thunderstorms, power outages and a tornado hit Moreno Valley that turned over an 18-wheeler and several freight train cars. The weather for the Memorial weekend was also unusual with very cool temperatures for the holiday that is supposed to be the beginning of summer. As a contrast the dancing has been hot, hot, hot! In April with Bill Haynes and in May with Vic Ceder. As usual, they both called excellent dances. Bill taught us the meaning of the term LEFT. It was more than just using the left hand; the dancer was also sometimes required to do some role reversals while executing the calls. Vic did some very interesting a- symmetric sequences. As we all know, Vic is the a-symmetric king. I had one caller tell me that he once asked Vic how do you do that? I can t remember how Vic answered, but afterwards the caller still couldn t figure out how. The heat continues in June with Ross Howell calling. We are looking forward in seeing him again. Ross is also calling at AACE later in June and the Dream Festival in August. I was also told that Ross is the favorite callers caller. Barbara and I are making our plans for traveling to AACE this year in Milwaukee, WI. A great lineup of callers is scheduled for the event. Every caller at AACE has or will be calling for Trailblazers. We hope to see other Trailblazers there again this year. I hear the air is different in San Diego. (After a call): You too Heidi. Smile, you re having fun. I m just trying to take the pressure off John. I m not calling fast, you re square is just too big! 3 Page 3 TRAILBLAZER (Continued from page 1) We normally would also schedule the Mid Summers Dream Festival held at the York Hotel in York, PA, but unfortunately due to a hotel snafu they had to schedule the event this year on the August TB weekend. For 2009 they also had to schedule for the August TB weekend, because of IPAC. Some of the callers scheduled for the Dream festival also call at IPAC. In 2010 they will be back to the regular July weekend and will not conflict with TB. There are several tape and workshop groups out there working on improving the dancer s skills. A lot of the material used for these groups are recorded from live club dances. Unfortunately, quite a few of the dancers are not attending the Trailblazer, Pace, Phantoms or Magic Squares to dance to a real live caller at floor speed. Dancing to a live caller is different because you can t stop the tip and start over. Usually if the floor is having difficulty completing the tip, the caller will sometimes go back and show folks where the problem(s) exist. Most clubs are struggling to stay afloat due to decreased attendance. We all need to support the club dances, if we want our level of the activity to continue. Trailblazers is making an attempt to increase the attendance and lowering the expenses by changing the TB dance format to a 2 day 4 sessions A2 through C3A weekend. The plan is to eliminate all of the star tips with the exception of the last tip at the 2 nd session of each day. This was a suggestion from the callers who feel the other star tips interrupt the flow of the session. The dancer surveys are being looked at very seriously and we hope to reach a decision at the next board meeting (Sunday, June 8, 2008). Whatever the outcome, nothing will be changed until Your feedback has been very valuable as have been the comments commending the club for using the survey method rather than just making an executive decision about the changes. On Saturday June 7, 2008 the TB Board Members will be installed for the next fiscal year. All board members have agreed to continue in their present positions with the exception of the A[]D representative that will now be David Yamasaki. We would like to encourage other folks to be involved in the board of the club and to participate in the club board meetings. We do not want our club to become stagnant so we encourage you to be involved. Please don t be shy; step up and volunteer to be on the TB board next time nominations are opened. Trailblazers have devoted members and guests who help out at each dance by carrying the equipment and furnishing refreshments. We want everyone to know that this is greatly appreciated, but we also appreciate when you contribute your new ideas and answers to challenges for our club future. Lastly, many of you may have noticed the sporty Trailblazer polo shirts with the embroidered logo at recent dances. This new look was designed by Sandy Brinigar. Sandy has the equipment to embroider shirts and caps, with the capability to embroidery jackets coming very soon. The Trailblazer board recently authorized Sandy as the official source of Trailblazer logo items (club members only please). She has a wide choice of styles and colors to choose from. Sandy also has a website that can be accessed to see pictures of samples. The website address is or call Sandy at (858) for additional information and questions. Members, if you wish to order a Trailblazer logo item, check out the ad in this issue of the newsletter. Orders must be placed no later than July 10, 2008 to be available for the August 1-3, 2008 dance. Caller Quotes Vic Ceder I thought that was pretty unusual too! Do you like this corner? I need it explained slowly, because I m blond. Debbie writes them. I just call them. (not really) I just go to Choreos R Us.com. That one cost $0.95. The other original girl is a girl too. It s a leasure to watch you prance. The announcements are shorter when John M. is not here. That s strange, even by my standards.
4 Page 4 TRAILBLAZER
5 Page 5 TRAILBLAZER (Continued from page 1) Sometimes I amaze myself. John, don t start thinking. (After a mistake): See, now I m calling what you re dancing. and In Roll circulate 1 & ½ or just doing ½ of in roll circulate. Motivate from two faced lines with variations of turning the star ¼. We heard what you said, but what did you want? It doesn t matter, I m not watching your square. Smile, people, this is entertainment! Smile, this is a game we play. It s OK, one of those three walls will work. Bill Haynes (April 4-6, 2008) A2 Workshop notes. Using the Callerlab A2 definitions preamble as a guide line for the use of the term LEFT. As described in the preamble, the term left has more to it than just using the left hand, it also sometimes requires the dancer to do some role reversals while executing the calls i.e., Left Track 2, Left fan the top, or Left and Right thru which did not get a lot of play but hopefully got the idea of what is possible at the A2 level. Focused on Left Hinge from normal couple formations as well as moving on to the use of Left Single Wheel. Using Left Turn and deal from lines facing out, Two faced lines and from ocean waves both right and left handed waves. Used as couples turn and deal from left handed two faced lines end to end. Left Track Two making sure the dancers used their left shoulder while reversing their roles on the call. Also using the parts of calls ie Scoot and weave 1 &1/2, Swing thru 1 & ½, Trade circulate 1 & ½, Workshop notes Vic Ceder Do you believe nobody on the board took notes? We all just danced and had fun. Is that any way to run a workshop? Sure was great!
