1 Subscription: $7.00/year Dec/Jan 2005/6 Volume XXIV Number 6 THE PRESIDENT S MESSAGE BY John & Carolyn Melstrom JOHN & CAROLYN MELSTROM I m back to dancing after my big trip! I missed George Monaghan s September dance, but I do remember my feet twitching as I was climbing castle walls in Italy. I hear that the dance was a big success and that George challenged all the dancers with many interesting calls. John Marshall s November dance put me to the challenge. Memory recall and dance speed were issues that I had to face after my big layoff. John s calling brought me quickly back to the square dance world. The other dancers had an equally exciting time. Thanks to both callers for great weekends. This will be the last paper Trailblazer newsletter for many of you. Karl Springer, webmaster, and Mickey Klinger, newsletter editor, have been working together to present the Trailblazer electronically. This should take place by the time of the next issue of the newsletter. If you haven t checked your address on our roster, please do so. Karl has received several undeliverable messages when he has done a test mail. The annual dues are now due. If you haven t already given Paul Libis your check ($15 per person), please do so as soon as possible. We need an accurate roster of members for insurance purposes, and a timely renewal will help keep the membership roster up to date. The holiday season is almost upon us and that means it s time for Carolyn s annual Christmas Boat Parade party at her family condo in Newport Beach. The date is Sunday, December 18, from 4:00 pm to 11:00 pm. (Continued on page 3) 2005/2006 Dec 2, 3, 4 Jan 6, 7, 8 Feb 3, 4, 5 Mar 3, 4, 5 Mar 31, Apr 1, 2 May 5, 6, 7 June 2, 3, 4 DUES ARE DUE FOR 2006 It is time to renew your Club membership! Dues are due on or before the December dance weekend. They are $15.00 per person, ($30.00 per couple). 3 Page 3 Dec/Jan 2005 TRAILBLAZER (Continued from page 1) [President s Message] The location is 310 Fernando, #302 (on the third floor). Please bring a salad or main dish to share. Carolyn would greatly appreciate any and all help before and after the party. If you can stay after 11:00 pm, Carolyn needs help cleaning up because another family member has the condo on Monday for their friends. The boat parade begins about 6:30 pm and comes by the condo between 7:00 and 8:00. Parking is difficult during parade times, so come early and consider carpooling. Be sure to wear something warm as it can become cold in December. If you have questions before the day of the parade or can volunteer to help, you can call us at (714) We can be reached at (949) ONLY on Sunday, December 18 (the day of the parade). The trip to Europe was fabulous! I was so busy that I had no time to miss being retired from teaching. I was told upon return that my school district called to see if I wanted to substitute. Carolyn told them I was somewhere between Carcassonne and Marbella and could not be reached. She advised them to call back after Christmas. Each day I would download my digital photos into my laptop computer and label everything. Like square dancing, if you take notes after experiencing something new, there is less likelihood that it will be forgotten. Over the 46 days I was gone, I took over 4000 photos and logged about sixteen and one half hours of video. I am now in the process of burning DVD s in order to archive the trip. It will be fun to pop a DVD into the big screen TV and relive the trip in a slide show. Another new endeavor for me was to keep a journal of each day s activities, along with commentary about just about anything that was different or unusual. I would write the journal after labeling the photos and while waiting for the camera and camcorder to recharge. The daily entries started off rather short, but as the days rolled onward, entries grew lengthier. By the time I flew home, I had thirty-five typewritten pages. Each day began early and lasted well into the night. In between there was a lot of driving (almost 7400 miles), interpreting maps, studying the descriptions of the cities we were visiting, walking over many cobblestones, climbing nearly every tower or city wall, and having a wonderful time. The trip was not unlike a day of teaching middle-schoolers and an evening at a square dance class or workshop. Decisions had to be made on the fly, schedules had to be adjusted, and precise directions had to be followed. We got lost more times than I like to admit, but it was understandable when you are working with only a general map of the country. Our car survived unscathed even though we squeezed through some streets that were only wide enough for one car. Pedestrians often had to get into doorways just to let a car get by. Evidence of less fortunate drivers close encounters could be seen in numerous gouges and scrapes along walls and corners of buildings. Cars scrambling everywhere reminded me of passing time between school classes with student bodies instead of metal fenders. I figured that my square dancing was going to look pretty much the same when I returned because I did not find any free time to study definitions. I was almost right! I started studying early for my Monday C3A class with George Monaghan. Just to be on the safe side, I started by going back to the C1 and C2 calls. Whoa! Fascinate, Tally Ho, Sets in Motion, Chain Reaction - - the names were familiar, but the definitions escaped me. I really was leery about going to class. Jetlag seemed like a perfect excuse to stay home. Fortunately the evening went very well, although there were more than a couple of deer in the headlights moments. Most likely George made the evening an easy one just to lower my anxiety level. Seven weeks away from square dancing does something to the memory. The more recent stuff seems to be recovered quickly, but the more distant calls, the ones you think you know, seem lost forever. You only hope you are inactive when the call occurs so you can watch what the others do. I had just had firsthand experience at the consequences of not studying the definitions, especially those of lower levels. A Ben Rubright dance several days later was all I needed to remind me of my reaction time! So, it s back to the books... Carolyn and I wish everyone a joyous holiday season and a happy and prosperous New Year. See you on the dance floor.

Later from a formation formed from parallel right-hand two-faced lines and having the leads Bend The Line, John workshopped "Do Your Part of Mini Busy". John also taught the (C-1) Stretch Concept where dancers execute the two- or four-dancer call but the new centers end past the flagpole center down the long axis: (1) from parallel ocean waves -- Stretch Explode The Wave, Stretch Recycle, Stretch Single Wheel, Stretch Peel Off; (2) from parallel two-faced lines -- Stretch Wheel & Deal, Stretch Turn & Deal, Stretch Crossfire; (3) from outfacing lines -- Stretch Single Wheel; (4) from a tidal wave -- Stretch Linear Cycle, Switch The Wave; (5) from a left-hand tidal wave -- Stretch Chain Down The Line; (6) from point-to-point diamonds -- Stretch Cut The Diamond; (7) from infacing lines -- Stretch (Facing) Recycle. 6 TRAILBLAZER Page 6 Dec/Jan 2005 IMPORTANT NOTICE (REVISED) At the last Trailblazers Board of Directors meeting, the Board determined that it would be very beneficial to the club to start publishing an electronic version of the Trailblazer newsletter instead of a paper version. Currently, we plan to start publishing electronically starting with the February/March, 2006, issue. To allow members and subscribers to experience what is involving in accessing an electronic version, Karl Springer has set up a special web page on the Trailblazers website. To access this page navigate to the website ( and then click on the "Trailblazer On-line" link. MISSING - TWO PAIRS OF HEARING RECEIVERS AND EARPHONES If anyone borrowed a hearing receiver and earphone from the Trailblazer s Wireless FM Listening System to use or to try out, please let John Marshall know. The Trailblazers purchased the transmitter for trial use, but we need the receivers and earphones for individuals to use at each dance. In order to see the contents of this file you must first have PDF file reader program installed on your computer. If you don't have such a program, the page has links to other websites that will allow you to download a free copy.
