1 May 2012 Volume 31 Number 5.1 THE PRESIDENT S MESSAGE by John & Carolyn Melstrom John &Carolyn Melstrom It s great to be back in Southern California again. After an extended vacation, I am faced with the usual outcome slower recall of calls, total memory loss of calls from lower levels, and a feeling the dance speed is in overdrive. My debut back was met with Vic Ceder saying Let s crank it up for John at the Phantom s dance. A week later at the PACE dance, Rob French challenged my math skills with Do one half of a Two Thirds Recycle. Although I heard it clearly, I was determined to do one half of a Recycle. I was reminded by several nearby dancers that my days of teaching math were not that distant. About half a tip later I figured it out. With the monthly publication of the Trailblazer newsletter I have come to realize that, despite missing some dances, writing my monthly article can be distilled down to a few basic standardized phrases. The following might serve as an example: The Trailblazers had a wonderful, challenging, delightful time at the (Month) dance called by (Caller). (He/She) kept the floor moving with intriguing patterns that left everyone in awe. Dancers could not become complacent because sequences that involved the same call several times were suddenly changed with a similarly-sounding call. Although the dance weekend conflicted with New Years, Super Bowl, Easter, Fourth of July, Trailblazers and guests had a great time. Many dancers commented after the dance how much they enjoyed the visit by (caller). Actually, all the above descriptions refers to Ett McAtee. I wasn t aware of her other nickname until (continued page 2) [President s Message] April 2012 Trailblazer Contents Page Advanced & Challenge Dances... 6 Board Members, Trailblazers, Board Members, Trailblazers, Caller s Bio, Anne Uebelacker... 2 Caller Calls and Concepts, Ett McAtee, April Caller Quotes, Ett McAtee, April Dance Schedules & Location, Saturday & Sunday... 7 Dances, Trailblazers, Upcoming Photo Gallery... 5 President s Message... 1 Swing Along The Trail... 4 Dave & Heidi Heffron C1 Angels Needed Deanna Kugler Trailblazer Statement of Policy... 7 Trailblazers Flyers A-2 & C-1 Schedule... 8 C-2 & C-3A Schedule... 9 Trailblazers Sunshine... 2 Upcoming 2012 Trailblazers Dances Saturday 1st Session C1, 2nd Session A2 Sunday 1st Session C2, 2nd Session C3A See page 7 for dance locations Jun Ross Howell... 2 Page 2 May 2012 Anne Uebelacker Trailblazers May 2012 Caller Anne started calling in 1976 for a children's group and has progressed to call for all dancing levels from Basic to C4. A strong "home" program for Squares Across the Border Monday through Thursday complements an equally busy traveling schedule on the weekends that may find her calling anywhere from Vancouver to Florida, Boston to San Francisco and across the miles to Japan and Europe. Some of her calling highlights she is really proud of are her calling assignments at the numerous IAGSDC Conventions in Canada and the Unites States, the Canadian Challenge Convention, the National Challenge Convention, and the Academy of Advanced and Challenge Enthusiasts. Anne's relaxed style and easy listening voice have won her many square dance friends at all the dancing levels and from all corners of the world. Anne was born and grew up in Peterborough, Ontario of Scottish parents and as a child Anne knew nothing of square dancing. After she finished high school her parents took square-dancing lessons. When a local Mainstream caller was having a weekend dancing campout that her parents were planning to attend, they invited Anne to come along to swim, enjoy the outdoors, or whatever since she had no specific plans for that weekend. It turned out that the dance was one dancer short of an additional square and Anne was drafted to fill in. After three days and a lot of push, pull, and shove, she was dancing (almost a Plus level) - and she was hooked! Anne then continued dancing at a local Mainstream club and enjoying it immensely. She soon realized that there's a lot more to square dancing than she had ever dreamed, and thought, "This is for me!" Anne resides in Burnaby, British Columbia, with her son Todd [President s Message] (continued from page 1) I read last month s newsletter. Ettilla the Hon she wasn t, but instead a fun-loving caller who really enjoys her calling. Although I missed Ett s April dance, you ll notice from Ett s Caller Quotes, fortunately other John M s were present so Ett had someone to whom she could direct her comments. It really gets complicated when more than one John M is in a square. Thanks, Ett, for a great dance. Rod Anderson and Hal Anker have come up with a great solution to the glare everyone has had to deal with when dancing at Mel s Place. It was difficult re-orienting oneself to the new Heads and Sides positions when the caller s stage was moved to the back of the hall. On top of that, if you faced towards the windows from the front of the hall, it was difficult to recognize anyone. It was even worse for the caller if they needed to look at a distant square. Hal and Rod provided a material frequently used for gardening-shading purposes that reduces the glare and allows everyone to see better. The draperies have now been modifying so that they can easily be put up and taken down each dance. Thank you Rod and Hal. We will be installing our Trailblazer Board members at our Saturday dance in May. Anne Uebelacker will be coming down from the northern latitudes so it should be a hot dance. I have missed several of Anne s dances, once because of a broken back, and another time because of the gout. I promise to be there this time, Anne. Trailblazers Sunshine Know or heard about a Trailblazers member who needs an extended hand of friendship in a time of happiness or sadness. Please inform Barbara Lane, our Trailblazers Sunshine Representative, so a big Yellow Rock can be sent through a written note. Barbara can be contacted in person, by phone ( ) or at sunshine@trailblazers-socal.org
3 Page 3 May 2012 Caller Quotes, April 2012 by Ett McAtee Look them in the good eye. Find a good corner. Back Square, Work NO Hands. Wake up the Center Girl... You have to be disciplined. Move that square in the back up here to the front so I can keep my eye on John (Martin). After the floor crashed... Square your set... I always debate if I should say Shadow as an alert... BUT... Girls are way out there... We are definitely going to do this again... (Dancer s name withheld): Turn Around.... I bet you re sorry you told me your name now!!! I m looking for the song, Little Gummy Bear. You know who uses it as a theme song?... Rob French does The Cute Little Gummy Bear! It s definitely a Rob French song. That square, get a grip... Ett requested John Martin s square - Dance no hands. Finally after some possibly undesirable results, Ett said, I think John Martin s square needs to use hands!!! I ll take it... I m sure you ll let me know what I left out. With all the laughter and fun happenings in a particular C3A squares, Ett became distracted and lost her place on her calling card. She chuckled and exclaimed, It s all John Martin s fault. At the end of the final tip on Sunday, Ett did not call the usual, Allemande Left, Promenade Home... She very simply and emphatically proclaimed: GO HOME!!!! (Pause, Pause) But Ett finished with an as enthusiastically spoken: THANKS FOR A GREAT DANCE!! Congratulations to grandparents Dave and Heidi Heffron, and great-grandparents Tom and Kris Heffron, on the birth of their granddaughter, Riley Marie Kiple, born on Feb 18, Riley also has 3 great-great-grandparents, two of which are still Square Dancing here in Southern CA. Angels needed for Vic Kaaria s C1 class. Vic has been instructing a C1 class at Cedarbrook Dance Center. The class started in October 3, 2011 and has been regularly dancing with 2 squares (including 3 Angels). A recent job-assignment change for 1 student and extended travel plans for another student have reduced student participation. If another student needs to be absent on a particular class evening, then not all students have the opportunity to dance every tip. If your schedule permits, your assistance as a C1 angel would be greatly appreciated. Class meets on Monday evening, 7:00 to 9:30 pm, Cedarbrook Dance Center, Garden Grove, CA. Information and maps can be found at It is with sadness this note about Deanna Kugler s eldest brother is conveyed. Jack Harrington, passed on April 18. Deanna fondly recalls the many joyful times they have shared. Trailblazers extends their heartfelt sympathy and thoughts of support to Deanna. Ett...
