Subscription: $7.00/year Feb/Mar 2006 Volume XXV Number 1 THE PRESIDENT S MESSAGE BY John & Carolyn Melstrom JOHN & CAROLYN MELSTROM A new newsletter era is about to begin! This will be the first electronic newsletter for most of you. Karl Springer has been very busy updating addresses and preparing for this first release. You will be able to read this newsletter straight from your monitor and, if you wish, print a hard copy. For those who still rely on the US Mail, your copy will arrive at postal speed. You will actually get this electronic version before the February dance, so the Coming Trailblazer Dances caller schedule on the front page will not be past history as you read this. Both Karl Springer, Webmaster, and Mickey Klinger, Trailblazer Editor, have done a great job getting ready for this moment. If any glitches occur, be sure to let us know so we can get your newsletter to you. December s dance with Lee Kopman and January s dance with Ben Rubright were big hits. They kept the dancers moving with unusual setups, and the dancers were reminded that one cannot overlook the importance of lower level calls. The Trailblazers always look forward to the visits of these two great callers Feb 3, 4, 5 REMEMBERING A FRIEND Those of you who have been dancing a long time probably remember Penny Doane, affectionately known as "Auntie Penny" from skits she performed at PACE Extravaganza. During the major growth years of Trailblazers, Penny was a strong advocate for the club and often volunteered her time and talents. Her most important contribution was to revive the new, but not very successful, Singles Rotation. She always said "If you're not sleeping with your partner, you need to be on the rotation; and that goes for married partners, too". She was able to motivate enough dancers that the Trailblazers Singles Rotation grew from about 4 to 6 dancers to over three squares. She was also able to help PACE successfully implement a Singles Rotation. One remark regarded an observation made by an east coast dancer when he inquired about our dances. When told that we dance C3A on Friday, A2 on Saturday, and C1/C2 on Sunday every first monthly weekend, he commented, You hold a festival every month! I had never thought about it that way before, but the Trail- (Continued on page 3) Mar 3, 4, 5 Mar 31, Apr 1, 2 May 5, 6, 7 June 2, 3, 4 July Aug 4, 5, 6 Bill Haynes Todd Fellegy Mike Jacobs John Marshall DARK Darryl Lipscomb

Page 3 Feb/Mar 2006 TRAILBLAZER (Continued from page 1) [President s Message] blazers do hold a three-day festival. What an opportunity for all levels of dancers. We have members and guests that come to our dances from places far and wide. And, most important, it is the regular attendance of our members that makes these weekends so successful. For those of you who may have missed some of our dances, I encourage you to join us and our great line-up of callers in Another remark that sparked my interest revolved around the level of difficulty at our dances. The Trailblazers prides itself on providing a National level dance program that is a cut above the normal dance level. Dancers at Advanced and Challenge levels who seek new and interesting variations of calls and higher level calls that incorporate lower level concepts are drawn to the Trailblazer dances. Higher level dancers attending lower level dances may often feel bored and would like the level to be made more challenging. However, we must remember that we are there to help dancers and guests at their level. We want to make the dancers feel comfortable and successful without pushing them beyond their limit. The helpfulness of the higher level dancers will reap the reward of having newer dancers and guests improve their skills, have fun, and want to return. I recently realized the adage, You don t know how well-off you have it until it isn t there any more. Unlike many square dancers who have to travel many miles to get to a class or workshop, I have been blessed by living a short distance away from classes and have taken it for granted that classes and workshops are but minutes away. George Monaghan has been my teacher from C1 through C3A and I have benefited from his classes. Even when going through a class a second or third time, a week didn t go by without learning something new. George always stresses knowing the definition of every call. There have been many dances where I have thanked George when I was confronted with a call that seemed impossible. George has moved to Prescott, Arizona, and the comfort of a nearby class has disappeared. There will be a big void in the Southern California square dance caller community. George was instrumental in the formation of the Trailblazers and is an Hon- orary Member. Many, if not most, square dancers in our area have had George as a teacher, and much of their prowess is due to his desire to make them the best dancers possible. I, personally, thank George for his efforts and for helping make me a better dancer. And I thank George and Carol for opening up their home for classes and dances. They will indeed be missed as they relax in their new home in Arizona. Several last reminders: If you have not already renewed your Trailblazer membership, please do so. A strong membership is a sign of a healthy club. Square dancing numbers may be declining, but we intend to keep on growing. Trailblazer elections are coming up soon. A strong organization needs the effort of all its members. Help from everyone, no matter how great or small, is key to our continued growth. Please consider how you might be able to contribute to making our club even stronger and show your willingness by stepping forward. The Trailblazers have had the pleasure of having dancers from the Magic Squares in San Diego attend our dances. I encourage you to support them as their new club grows. Their next dance is February 25. I hope many of our members will join them on that date. It is important that we support Advanced and Challenge dancing in the Southern California area. The Trailblazers look forward to great dances with Bary Clasper in February and Bill Haynes in March. Come on out and enjoy the fun and friendship. See you on the dance floor.
Page 4 TRAILBLAZER Feb/Mar 2006 DANCE REVIEW by Craig Shucker Lee Kopman was the featured caller for the December Trailblazers weekend. At the Friday C-3A session, some of is more interesting material included: (1) from parallel ocean waves -- Finish 3/4 The Deucey; (2) from parallel ocean waves -- Initially Checkerboard Mix; (3) from outfacing lines -- Own The Ends, Snap The Lock by Partner Trade & Roll; (4) from twin diamonds -- Own The Points, Strip The Diamond by Counter; (5) from parallel 3&1 lines with the heads as couples with their right hands to the center and with sides in right-hand mini-waves -- Own The Heads, Percolate by Split Circulate and Hocus Pocus; (6) from parallel single-file columns with girls as #1 & #2 in the columns -- Own The Girls, Invert The Column by Trade & Roll; (7) from parallel ocean waves - - Own The Leaders, Follow Your Leader by Beau Hop; (8) from outfacing lines -- Split Phantom Lines Catch 2; (9) from parallel ocean waves -- Split Phantom Waves Exchange The Boxes 3/4; (10) from a formation formed from parallel 3&1 lines with outfacing centers and the ends with their right hands to the center and having the centers Press Right -- In Split Phantom Columns Centers Walk & Dodge, Ends Circulate 2; (11) sequence: from a formation formed from parallel right-hand ocean waves and having the ends Peel Off -- Inside Tandem-Based Triangles Wheel The Sea; Outside Tandem- Based Triangles Wheel The Ocean. Lee Kopman At the Saturday A-2 workshop Lee workshopped quite a few simple applications of higher-level calls and concepts. He introduced Squeeze, Right/Left Loop 1, 3 By 1 Cut/Flip The Diamond, Galaxy Circulate, Butterfly Circulate, O Circulate, Wave-Based Triangle Circulate, and several simple calls using the Triple Boxes concept. Also from a formation consisting of a center line of 6 dancers and two lonesome dancers as points of a center diamond, Lee used the terms "Very Center Diamond", "Middle Diamond" and "Outer Diamond" to refer to the diamonds formed using the lonesome points and the designated dancers in the center line of 6. Other calls used during this session included: (1) from a formation formed from a left-hand 3/4 tag and having the very centers and the outside beaus Run -- Centers Work As Couples, All Any-Hand Grand 1/4 Thru; (2) from parallel 3&1 lines with infacing ends and with center right-hand mini-waves -- Coordinate; (3) from parallel two-faced lines -- Motivate But Turn The Star 1/4; (4) from a formation formed from outfacing lines with boys as the left-hand couples and having the girls Quarter Out -- Do Your Part, Boys Crossover Circulate Twice, Girls Split Circulate & Roll; (5) from a formation formed from parallel two-faced lines with the boys facing in and having the girls Face In -- Do Your Part, Boys Crossover Circulate Twice, Girls Checkmate The Column. At the A-2 dance session, Lee used some of the calls from the workshop session, but also included additional interesting material: (1) from a facing diamond with right-hand centers -- 1/4 Thru or 3/4 Thru; (2) from columns with the ends in right-hand mini-waves and the centers in left-hand mini-waves -- Those Facing Start Pass & Roll; (3) from a formation formed from parallel ocean waves and having the centers Counter Rotate -- Cast A Shadow; (4) from a formation formed from parallel single-file columns with boys as #3 and #4 in the columns and having the boys 1/2 Zoom -- Girls Start Peel The Top; (5) from parallel left-hand ocean waves -- (Do The Parts) In Reverse Order 1/4 Thru; (6) from parallel right-hand ocean waves -- (Do The Parts) In Reverse Order Remake; (7) from a formation formed from facing lines with the boys as the right-hand couples and having the boys Single Wheel -- Do Your Part, Girls Inroll Circulate, Boys Column Circulate; (8) from a formation formed from facing lines with boys as beaus and girls as belles and having the girls Face Out -- All Do Your Part, Acey Deucey & The Girls Roll. The Sunday C-1 session was primarily a dance session. Some of the more interesting calls Lee used included: (1) from parallel ocean waves with the girls facing out -- Percolate, Girls Twice; (2) from a formation formed from outfacing lines and having the centers Face Out -- Regroup, Centers Twice; (3) from a tidal wave -- Concentric Linear Cycle; (4) from parallel ocean waves -- Concentric Zing; (5) from infacing lines -- Square The Bases, Replace Split Square Thru 2 with Split Square Thru 4; (6) from infacing lines -- Square The Bases, Replace Split Square Thru 2 with Split Square Chain Thru and Replace Trade By with The Axle; (7) from a formation formed from parallel inverted lines with infacing ends and having the right-hand miniwaves Hinge -- (Start Phantom) Tally Ho; (8) from a formation formed from a 1/4 tag with original partners facing each other on a Jay and having the centers Slip and Spin The Top and having the ends 1/4 Out -- With Your Original (Continued on page 5)
TRAILBLAZER Page 5 Feb/Mar 2006 (Continued from page 4) [DANCE REVIEW] Partner Jay Partner Trade & Roll; (9) from a formation formed from a completed double pass thru with girls as belles and having the girls Zig Zag -- Do Your Part, Girls Linear Cycle, Boys Trade & Roll; (10) from parallel right-hand two-faced lines -- Do Your Part, Leaders Percolate, Trailers Circulate and Left Shakedown. The Sunday C-2 session was also primarily a dance session. Some of the more challenging calls included: (1) from parallel single-file columns -- Magic File To A Wave; (2) from a tidal wave -- Swing Along But Add An Extra Circulate; (3) from same-hand twin diamonds -- Exchange The Diamonds Once & 1/4; (4) from facing twin diamonds -- Exchange The Diamonds; (5) from a tandem-based triangle -- Tandem-Based Triangle Wheel The Ocean or Wheel The Sea. Ben Rubright started the new year for Trailblazers by calling our January weekend. At the C- 3A dance session, he presented a good dance with interesting applications of concepts: (1) from split phantom right-hand ocean waves with all the dancers in the outermost waves -- Split Phantom Waves 1/4 Mix; (2) from a formation formed from parallel two-faced lines and having the centers Counter Rotate -- Own Ben Rubright The Centers, Reach Out by Follow Thru; (3) from a formation formed from a double pass thru and having the centers Touch 1/4 -- Own The Centers, Drift Apart by Circle To A Wave; (4) from a formation formed from parallel ocean waves and having the centers Counter Rotate -- Own The Ends, Flip Back by Walk Out To A Wave; (5) from a double pass thru -- Initially Cross Concentric, Spin Chain The Line; (6) from a 3/4 box -- Initially Centers, Scoot & Counter; (7) from parallel ocean waves -- Initially Checkerbox, Catch Mix 3; (8) from a formation formed from parallel right-hand two-faced lines and having everyone 1/2 Press Back -- Initially Triple Lines, Tag Back To A Wave; (9) from a formation formed from infacing lines and having the ends slide out one position -- Initially Triple Boxes, Catch Mix 3; (10) from a double pass thru -- Initially Centers, Catch Scoot The Diamond 3; (11) from a formation formed from infacing lines and having the ends Face In -- Initially Centers, Catch Follow Thru 2; (12) from a completed double pass thru -- Initially Beaus Stable, Turn To A Line Motivate; (13) from a left-hand tidal line -- Finally Once Removed, 1/4 Wheel The Sea; (14) from an eight chain thru with sashayed couples as centers and normal couples as ends -- Finally Girls, Catch Inlet 3; (15) from a tidal wave with boys as the very ends and with boys as ends of the center wave of 4 -- Finally Boys, Flip Your Neighbor. At the Saturday A-2 workshop Ben presented our dancers with a challenging program. First, he reviewed replacing the last Cast Off 3/4 of a call with another call (to save space, most will be presented here in abbreviated form): (1) from parallel ocean waves -- Relay The Deucey But (Replace The Last Cast Off 3/4 With) Mix; (2) from parallel ocean waves -- Spin Chain The Gears But Mix; (3) from parallel ocean waves -- Spin Chain The Gears But Switch To A Diamond; (4) from parallel right-hand ocean waves -- Motivate But Turn & Deal; (5) from a right-hand 1/4 Tag - - Chain Reaction But Turn & Deal; (6) from twin diamonds -- Diamond Chain Thru But Spin The Top. The material that caused the most discussion was Ben's review of Cloverleaf as a 4-dancer call working from a box consisting of two single-file columns of two. The leaders roll back in a 270 degree arc to end up facing and the trailers follow the their original leaders to end behind them; the result is single double pass thru. Although some may argue that this is not acceptable usage of the call, the CALLERLAB definitions do not specifically exclude it. C-3 dancers will recognize this call as Peel The Deal. Ben also used Cross Cloverleaf in a similar fashion. Other calls used during this session included: (1) from parallel ocean waves -- Follow Your Neighbor & Spread & Slither; (2) from twin diamonds with all outfacing points -- Cut The Diamond; (3) from outfacing lines -- As Couples Chase Right; (4) from a right-hand tidal lines -- As Couples 1/2 Tag. The Saturday A-2 dance was primarily a straightforward fast-paced dance, but Ben included a few unusual calls: (1) from a formation formed from a completed double pass thru and having the center beau Run (3/4 box) -- Clover & Peel The Top; (2) from a formation formed from a right-hand 3/4 tag and having the centers of the wave Run (3/4 line) -- Clover & Chain (Continued on page 7)
TRAILBLAZER Page 6 Feb/Mar 2006 (Continued from page 1) [A FRIEND] Penny has been blind in one eye for 24 years. At Christmastime she lost the vision in the other eye. Its called non-arteric anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (optic nerve death). Usually it happens in both eyes in rapid succession. She is taking it like a pro and feels fortunate for having the 24 years of sight. She is living with her daughter Mandy in San Marcos right now. She is taking classes in 'Living Blind' at a Braille Institute in San Diego, and getting lots of 'equipment' for the blind too. Her goal is to live independently at her senior living apartment in San Marcos with a little help. MISSING - TWO PAIRS OF HEARING RECEIVERS AND EARPHONES If anyone borrowed a hearing receiver and earphone from the Trailblazer s Wireless FM Listening System to use or to try out, please let John Marshall know. The Trailblazers purchased the transmitter for trial use, but we need the receivers and earphones for individuals to use at each dance.
