3 Page 3 Trailblazers Presidents Message Trailblazers is a unique club, because we offer National Level Callers from A2 thru C3 on the first weekend of most months. This is like a festival that requires a lot of planning and support from all members and dancers. It is such a pleasure to be a part of the Trailblazer Square Dance club. We recently realized that both Barbara and I have been on the Board of Directors for 15 years. During that time, we have had several issues to John & Barbara Marshall contend with. 1) we lost the Paramount Senior Center for our Saturday sessions, 2) changed the dance/workshop formats, 3) changed the dancing hours to accommodate a 1-1/2 lunch break for both Saturday & Sunday sessions, and 4) replaced the star tips with ones of increased difficulty at the level of the session. Recently Shirley McNiel had to resign her position as the 3rd Vice President for the Saturday sessions because of health reasons. We need someone to volunteer to take her place and continue supervising the refreshment area. Trailblazers only provides coffee and water for all sessions. The kitty fund was established so that the 3rd Vice Presidents can buy additional items to complement the refreshment area as needed. There was a lengthy discussion at our last Board Meeting about the club s liability with serving donated food. Please give generously to the fund, so that everyone can enjoy the benefits. A lot of Trailblazers attended the Challenge sessions in the Wine Country 2016 in Sebastopol, CA: Latch on C3A July 31-August 4, 2016 with Vic Ceder, and The Catch C2 August 9-12, 2016 with Sandie Bryant. There were mostly 3 sessions per day for both groups, and by the end of each day, the dancers were ready for a much needed rest. At our last September Labor Day weekend dance, Barry Clasper from Toronto, Canada did some very interesting T-bone asymmetric sequences during the entire weekend. He started calling for our club in 2004 and has called every year since through this year. He is also scheduled to call for us for the next two years; and hopefully further into the future. The club s By-Laws, Standing Rules, and Code of Ethics are being reviewed and will be updated soon. They will be available to ALL members. All new members should be given a copy of the current documents as soon as they become members. There have been several comments made at the A2 sessions that Trailblazers needs to have computer squares. The dancers that dance A2 only are accustomed to having computer squares. In the past Trailblazers has avoided this step by always encouraging the members NOT to stack squares and allow new dancers to mix with experienced dancers. The computer squares also allow the squares to be mixed. We encourage single dancers to come and dance with the club. To allow for this, we have a singles rotation board in use. For the DECEMBER 2016 A2 dance only, we will try Presidents Message (continued next page)

4 Page 4 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE (continued from page 3) computer squares to see if this will be a workable and popular solution. In the past when there were uneven squares, the people who stayed out would usually be the same people. The computer squares would eliminate this repeat sit-out problem. There are a couple of programs available that will accommodate the singles. The system can also accommodate those who wish to sit out at their discretion. We are inviting ALL dancers that would like to be a part of this test. Remember on November 6, 2016 Daylight Savings Time ends. If anyone has any suggestions or comments to make the club better, either tell a Board Member or attend any Board Meeting. Remember ALL members are invited to be present. We are looking forward into seeing you in a square soon. 5 Page 5 Darryl Lipscomb Trailblazers October 2016 Caller Darryl Lipscomb began square dancing at the age of 12, started calling at the age of 14, and made calling his full time profession in He was raised dancing to C.O. Guest and Ray Smith who both called for the clubs to which his parents were members. Both were very instrumental in encouraging and helping Darryl. Darryl conducts a winter program in Mission, Texas, for all the Winter Texans" who choose to spend their winters in the "Tropics" of the Rio Grande Valley. He calls a full range of programs, beginners through C-3B. In 1987, the McAllen, Texas, Chamber of Commerce staged the first South Texas Square Dance Jamboree and has repeated the event each year with the help of the Caller Staff for the Jamboree. In addition, the Chamber of Commerce initiated another program which has become The World s Largest Beginners Square Dance Class meeting for three weeks beginning in mid-january on every Monday morning for two hours. Darryl is one of the staff callers for both the Largest Beginners Class and the Jamboree. During the summer months, he travels extensively throughout the United States and foreign countries, calling many festivals, weekends, and week-long institutes. Among his favorites is Kirkwood Lodge, where no dancing or calling career is complete, until you've attended a week at this historical square dance destination! When dancing to Darryl you are assured of smooth flowing, innovative, and exciting choreography. He enjoys calling all levels of square dancing equally well; however, he admits working with beginners is especially exciting! Darryl has recorded on several square dance record labels ESP, Global Music, Good Vibrations, Grand, Prairie, Riverboat and Square Tunes and is currently a Staff Caller for Global Music Productions. He is also a member of CALLERLAB. A message from our Food Lady and 3rd Vice President, Shirley McNiel... To all My Friends at Trailblazers, I am writing this NOT because I want to but I have to. I still can t stand longer than 15 to 20 minutes, go shopping or drive. After a long conversation with my therapist Friday and today Monday I need to resign from my post as 3rd Vice President. I will not be able to do my job for at least 6 to 8 months from what I have been told. I cannot tell you how much this upsets me. I truly enjoy fixing treats on Saturday for the Trailblazers. I will miss visiting with my friends. But I need to put myself first and do all I can to try to improve my walking, standing, etc. I really don't know if I can come back to dancing, but I am going to try my best. Shirley, we wish for you a speedy and complete recovery. Thanks for all of your past contributions to Trailblazers and for your efforts to make our Saturday Square Dances extra special.
