1 Volume XXX Number 5 THE PRESIDENT S MESSAGE by John & Carolyn Melstrom John and Carolyn Melstrom Summer comes to a close with hot weather and two equally hot dances. In August, Rob and CJ called a great dance. Since the Marshalls and Melstroms were out of town, running the club was assumed by Bruce and Nancy Rosenblum. The dance was a big success, with Rob and CJ using their calling skills to challenge the floor. The September dance was equally spectacular. Bronc Wise called to larger than usual crowds, mixing his smooth styling with different and unusual positioning. There were a number of dancers from local clubs who commented about how much fun it was, as did several dancers who were new to the level. I was impressed with the enthusiasm of the visiting dancers. Word has gotten out about the great dancing at Trailblazer dances. Plus, there have been many comments about how friendly the Trailblazers are. Hopefully our visitors will spread the word among their friends and we will see even bigger crowds. Many clubs have dancers who may be at the Advanced or Challenge level, but they seldom venture to a higher level dance such as ours. We hope that they will realize that, in addition to supporting their own club, they have the opportunity to experience a different kind of calling like that offered at a Trailblazer s dance. 5 Page 5 TRAILBLAZER (Continued from page 1) [PRESIDENT S MSG] callers like those on the Trailblazer schedule don t come to our area often, yet our club features such callers every month. The publication of this newsletter comes as a result of the hard work of a new group of Trailblazers. While Karl Springer was recovering from a heart attack, Tom Roberts, as back-up webmaster, has kept us up to date with the last newsletter and dance reminders. Karl is now back in action and Tom is standing by. Steve and Mickey Klinger will be vacationing in Canada shortly, so Hal Anker will be publishing the newsletter and club flyers. Thanks to Tom and Hal for making everything work so seamlessly. One additional note regarding health issues - John Martin is on the road to recovery following recent surgery. We wish him a speedy recovery. Challenge classes have been few and far between in Southern California in recent years. In order to offer the opportunity to enter Challenge dancing, the Trailblazers will support two C1 classes, one taught by Rod Shuping in the San Fernando Valley area and another taught by Frank Lescrinier in Orange County. As soon as last-minute details are completed, a flyer with contact numbers, dates, and locations will be available on our Trailblazer website. Copy it and pass it on to any friends or dancers you know of who might enjoy learning or re-learning C1. Both callers will use the same teaching order so, if someone can t make one of Frank s classes in Orange County, they can get the class in the Valley with Rod. Trailblazer members are encouraged to promote the classes as you visit other clubs, and angels are always welcomed. It is hoped that these classes will provide an opportunity for dancers who would like to learn the next level. It also opens the door for these dancers to experience the level of dance provided by the Trailblazers each month. The club has purchased a new sound enhancement system. The old system had undergone several repairs, and buying a new system was the logical choice. It arrived and will be put into use at the October dance. If you are interested in purchasing special earphones, Bruce Rosenblum can provide you with details. The time is approaching for collection of Trailblazer yearly dues. At $12 per person, they are a bargain. Bring a check with you to the October or November dance and drop it off with Treasurers, Robert and Vickie Morris. It is important that we get our updated roster and insurance fees to A Square D as early as possible in order to be covered by insurance. There were a few things that were brought to my attention at our last dance. One issue regarded booking squares. Trailblazer members are good dancers and capable of dancing in any square. Setting up a square for support is not necessary. If a person wants to help a guest or friend, arrange the square ahead of time and walk onto the dance floor together as a group. It is inappropriate when only one or two couples are standing in a square and, when another couple approaches the square and sees empty positions, say that the square is full. The Trailblazers want everybody to feel welcomed. Asking our guests if we may join their square will certainly help to promote the friendliness that we wish others to experience. Another point brought to my attention was the swinging upside-down of a dancer. Enthusiasm is encouraged, but temper it with caution. Some dancers are not so nimble, and caught off guard, can slip or turn in an unhealthy manner. One of our members recently recovered from just such an occurrence. So, enjoy the dance, but mind the body. Our October dance brings Darryl Lipscomb back to our area. We missed him the last two years and look forward to his fine calling. In November we are treated to the return of Dave Wilson. This time he comes from Arizona, his winter home, a little bit closer than Sweden. Both dances will give members and guests the opportunity to marvel at unique and entertaining callers. See you on the dance floor.
