3 1916 Easter Rising: Maria Winifred (Winnie) Carney McBride Winnie Carney was born in Bangor, Co. Down on December 4, The family moved to Belfast when she was young and she was educated at the Christian Brothers School. Later on she became a teacher at the same school. Winnie was a suffragette, a trade unionist, a Socialist and a Labor activist. Wearing so many hats, belonging to so many different organizations, was not unusual for the strong women of her day. Most of the women who formed and joined Cumann na mban or the Irish Citizen Army began their political activism as a suffragette and/or a trade unionist. In 1912, she was in charge of the Irish Textile Workers' Union, Women's Section in Belfast. It was through this affiliation that she met James Connolly. Her biographer noted that she was the one person who really knew Connolly's politics. Winnie became his personal secretary. In 1914, she joined Cumann na mban and was at the first meeting. On April 14, 1916, Connolly sent a telegram asking her to come to Dublin immediately. She was mobilized on Easter Monday to the General Post Office (G.P.O.) and was the first woman to enter the building with the rebels. It is noted that she entered with a typewriter in one hand and a Webley revolver in the other. Winnie stayed the week at the G.P.O. taking Connolly's dictation of orders and having them distributed. She took his final dictation to surrender. Pearse gave the order for everyone to evacuate but Connolly was injured and she would not leave his side. She, along with Julia Grenan and Elizabeth O'Farrell carried Connolly on a stretcher from the burning building to a safe house on Moore Street. It should be noted that these three women were the last people along with Connolly in the G.P.O. and they carried the stretcher themselves without assistance. After the surrender, she was arrested and sent Kilmainham. After that she was transported to Aylesbury Prison in England along with Helena Moloney and Nell Ryan. They requested that their status as "internee" be revoked along with the privileges that went with it. The wanted the same prisoner status as Constance Markievicz. Their request was denied and they were released in December of She was awarded the 1916 Medal. At the 1918 General Election, she ran for Parliament as a Sinn Fein candidate for Belfast Victoria. She lost miserably to the Labour Unionists. Winnie was on the Anti-Treaty side of the divide and was arrested several times. In 1924 she joined the Labour Party and was an active member of the Labour Party in Northern Ireland (NILP). In 1928 she married George McBride. He was a Protestant Orangeman and a former member of the Ulster Volunteers. He was a fellow Socialist. Winnie continued to be involved in the trade union movement and worked for the Irish Transport and General Workers Union (ITGWU). She did not agree with the Free State government and was steadfastly opposed to partition. 5 Pot-Roasted Pork with Root Vegetables and Apples By Leslie McGlynn (serves 6) Ingredients 2 TBSP Butter 5 strips bacon, finely chopped 2 onions, quartered 3 carrots, coarsely chopped 3 parsnips, coarsely chopped 6 cloves garlic, peeled One 2-LB boneless Pork leg or shoulder roast, rolled and tied Salt and pepper 2 cups apple juice or cider 2 apples, peeled, cored, and coarsely chopped Boiled potatoes (for serving, optional) Source: The Country Cooking of Ireland By Colman Andrews Leslie's Recipe & Recommendations Directions Preheat oven to 400 F Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the bacon and cook for minutes, stirring frequently, until well browned. Remove bacon from skillet and transfer to a baking dish large enough to hold the pork roast, with room to spare. Put onions, carrots, parsnips, and garlic into skillet and cook in the butter and bacon fat for minutes, stirring frequently, or until well browned. Remove vegetables for the skillet and transfer them to the baking dish, stirring to mix them with the bacon. Snip the twine off the pork and season it with salt and pepper. Put pork into the same skillet, raise heat to high and cook, adding more butter if necessary for 4-6 minutes, turning frequently, until browned all over. Transfer pork to the baking dish. Deglaze the skillet with the apple juice or cider, letting it boil for 3-4 minutes. Put the apples in the baking dish, around the pork. Drizzle reduced cider or juice over all, then roast in oven for about 20 minutes. Reduce heat to 275, cover the baking dish and roast for about 1 hour more or until the meat is tender Remove meat from baking dish, let sit for 5 minutes, then carve. Serve with vegetables and any cooking juices on the side and with boiled potatoes, if you like. Tina Mulrooney is a harpist and traditional Irish ballad singer from Co, Clare in the rugged west of Ireland. I first heard her music on a CD that our CIE tour guide was playing and when we arrived at the Cliffs of Moher, there was Tina playing her harp. It was beautiful and so I bought her CD, "A Memory of Ireland". Her music is beautiful and I have not stopped listening to her yet. And if you ever go back to Ireland, stop at the Cliffs of Moher and meet Tina. To listen to Tina: s&toggle=1&ilc=1&fp=1&cop=mss&ei=UTF-8&p=tina%20mulrooney%20harpist To order Tina Mulrooney's CD:
