1 The 2 Seater March, 2011 March Major Events: MARDI GRAS 2011 Pub Night First Day of SPRING Dinner Night Eurocar Meeting IASC International Auto Showcase Board Meeting The 2 Seater Published Monthly by: The MG Car Club of Central NY P.O. Box 1666 Cicero, NY Newsletter Editor: Terri LaVergne tlavergne@twcny.rr.com Advertising rates/info: Contact Rick Kunz rkunz@twcny.rr.com MG Enjoy The Ride! President s Message Happy March, everyone! Spring is almost here. What a nice break we had those 2 days mid-month. Sure gave me the itch to get Sunshine out and into the sunshine. Yet, even in the doldrums of Central New York winters or maybe because of them the club continues to be active with so many things going on. The after holiday party was everything I had hoped and even more! Our soloist, Tish, was just delightful! She sang some very happy memory songs, and a few of her own design. She mentioned that she works with Joe Ripozzo, whom I m sure our club musicians know. I was lucky enough to have Joe as my Clarinet teacher back in Elementary and Middle school. (Bet you didn t know I played the Clarinet or at least attempted to). She is a very talented woman, and we were very lucky to have her entertain for us. And I did not realize we had such dancers among us! Thanks, Ray and Linda, for putting this together and for bringing Tish to our party. I sponsored Pub Night at Meghan MacMurphy s in Liverpool. There were only a few of us there, largely due to the weather, but we had the opportunity to be together and that s what counts. By the time you read this, we will have been to the Mystery Theater at Spaghetti Warehouse. I had promised I wouldn t win again, but hoped I shared some of my insight so someone else from the club did win. And the valve cover races are part of our March meeting Message cont d Pg4

5 The MGB featured in Classic Motorsports magazine's Drive Time segment, March 2011 issue, page 14, belongs to our very own, Richard Major! He s been a Club member about six years, and was 3rd in Class at Eurocar 2010 with his 1978 MGB, and is proud to let us know his MGB was this month s featured vehicle. As Follows: We have designated the second Friday of each month as Drive Your Classic to Work Day. Photographic evidence of such trips is much appreciated. Two months after Richard Major finished a rolling restoration of his 1978 MGB, the car was rear-ended. It has been reassembled, now sports a very bright third brake light, and has since won some trophies. I am a sales rep calling on home center stores in Central New York, he writes. And as the photo shows, yes, sometimes the car gets to join him at work. head injury at the Tech Session? Larkin s Winter Storage Poor John s crying! The ice-cream store is CLOSED! 5

6 Historic Jaguar C-Type to Fetch $3.7 Million in London by Jared Paul Stern (RSS feed) A rare 1950s Jaguar C-Type has been added to the lineup at RM Auctions' Automobiles of London event on October 27, where it joins the famed 1964 Aston Martin DB5 driven by Sean Connery as James Bond in Goldfinger and Thunderball as we reported in June. 7 The After Holiday Party of 2011 We were happy that so many of our MG buddies turned out and had an opportunity to enjoy Tish and the fun and food at the Lincklaen House. The staff who worked with us were thrilled to be part of the festivities and stated they wished that all their Banquets were like ours! Ray Hevner Featured Performer at The After-Holiday Party of 2011 Tish Oney, DMA Jazz Vocalist/Lyric Soprano New York and Los Angeles Dr. Tish Oney, vocalist, arranger, pianist, composer and Artistic Director of several internationally-touring productions including her brand new 'Sweet Youth' tour (celebrating the spring 2011 release of her new duo album with guitarist John Chiodini), 'The Peggy Lee Project,' 'Jazz Seasons,' 'Tish Oney's Big Band Excursion,' 'Tish Oney's Swingin' Christmas, 'An Evening With Tish Oney,' and 'A Journey Through Holy Week with J.S. Bach,' completed her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at The University of Southern California's renowned Thornton School of Music. Oney's second CD, 'Dear Peg,' earned international recognition in WHLI Radio's Top 50 Releases of Tish maintains a very active touring and recording career. Her singing has been featured internationally on radio, television and internet media. In 2009 Tish embarked on a national tour following the release of "Dear Peg," and continues to appear worldwide as a full-time touring vocal artist. Jazz festival credits include Earshot Jazz Festival (Kirkland, WA) and Syracuse Jazzfest (Syracuse, NY), among others. She has performed at regional jazz hotspots from The Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles to The Jazz Corner in Hilton Head, South Carolina to Michael Feinstein's elite Park Avenue cabaret, Feinstein's at Loews Regency. A mainstay in the Los Angeles and New York jazz scenes, Tish has been lauded in the 2008 book "The Jazz Singers: The Ultimate Guide" authored by jazz critic Scott Yanow. She has also recently been honored to be named The Robert G. Boehmler Visiting Artist at Ithaca College School of Music. A recipient of The Diane Warren Award, Dr. Oney earned a second initiation into national music honor society Pi Kappa Lambda for her musical excellence. Dr. Oney earned her Master of Music degree in Voice Performance from Ithaca College. She continues to actively perform, record, compose, arrange, teach master classes and appear worldwide as a soloist in both jazz and classical circles. Her diverse artistic talents combine to form a consummate vocal artist with exceptional technique, improvisational skill, and expertise. For more information about Tish s career, recordings and tour schedule, please see 7

8 Eurocar 2011 Update Eurocar continues to develop, and more people are stepping up to help out. The Sponsorship Committee will be chaired by Dave Winne, but Rick Kunz and Dick Jeffers will be working hand in hand with Dave. If there is anyone you know who might be a candidate to sponsor Eurocar for as little as $50 please let Dave know. While Ray has offered to do all the ordering and pre show work for Regalia, he is unavailable for the day of show. Bob Trombley has stepped up and offered to take care of Regalia the day of show. Thanks for these new volunteers, and to all who have so graciously offered to chair or continue to participate in the planning. Judging this year, as you may or may not know, will be by all the registered participants we will be referring to this as Participant Judging going forward. Final details are being worked out between Glen Markham and Paul Andrews, with input from our previous chairmen John Golas and Lynn Moyer. This will be reported at our March meeting and we will update you next month in this article. The show field will have a new look this year. We will be moving spectator parking to the back section of Lorenzo. Spectators will access the show via the 2 nd road the one through which we exited last year. This will allow the main entrance to be used for show cars only, and we will be able to close the road at 12:00 noon. Late arrivals have always been a problem for registration, so this is a huge step towards minimizing this issue. All vendors, including the food vendor, will be arranged in a semi circle the section where spectator parking used to be to the left of the show field as you face Lorenzo from the lake side. The Premier Cars will be displayed in front of the mansion to the right of the show field, with a walkway to the cars. We are also looking into provided a 50s & 60s band for 2 hours in that same area as the Premier Cars. That will allow us to use the entire show field to display the registered cars, and for the Hospitality, Memorabilia, Judging and Charity tents on the middle section. We also plan to face the cars towards the lake, so anyone driving down Rt. 20 can see the front of the cars and the participants will have a great view of the lake. Finally, due to some complications with providing charitable donations to the Ronald McDonald house, we have deferred to the second choice The Food Bank as our charity for the show. We are pleased to go this route as we know the money stays in the Central New York Area, not to mention how badly food is needed in these desperate times. New ideas and new plans continue to develop. Please feel free to join us at our next Eurocar 2011 meeting at the Retreat Restaurant in Liverpool on March 16 th. Dinner at 6:00, the meeting will start at 6:30. We welcome all suggestions, and can certainly use any and all volunteers. 9 By Jim Konopelski Jean and I are spending our 10th year at our place in Mission, Texas in the Rio Grande Valley. We are only 14 miles from Reynosa and the Rio Grande River. Each year the Valley swells with Winter Texans to fill up over 500 RV Parks. There is a multitude of things to do here. Each day of the week there are numerous dances, jams in the parks and entertainers to see. Many of the entertainers are from Branson. There are various tours into Mexico but the Winter Texans have stopped going due to the Gulf Cartel/Zeta drug war. However, many go to Progreso, just across the border, to shop, eat, dance, buy medication, get haircuts, buy adult beverages and alike. A prescription is not required to purchase drugs. We are about 80 miles from the South Padre Island and have been there three times so far this season including New Years Eve. New Year day we watched the annual Polar Bear swim in the bay. This is actually the slow season at SPI and renting a condo is reasonable. In the middle of March there is Spring Break and the Island swells with college kids who drink and take their clothes off on the beach. We recently attended the Annual Citrus Parade here in Mission. Our RV Park (Split Rail) won second place in the produce category. We seem to win every year. We have also attended the bull riding event at the Mercedes Livestock Yards and the full Rodeo in Los Fresnos which is near SPI. The weather here has been mostly in the 70 s-80 s with an occasional cold front passing through. It has drizzled a couple of times but no New York style heavy rain.
