1 PRAIRIE FIRE CHEERLEADING THIS IS WHO WE ARE We are pleased to invite you to our 9 th year of Competitive All-Star Cheerleading. We are always pleased to see smiles at PFC practices, training driven by excitement, and athletes who are ready to Dream it! The season will continue to build on last year s challenges and successes. In the last three years we have shared a statement: Dream it, Build it, Own it! We knew if we could Build a cheerleading program and a family of athletes, parents and coaches to support it: success would come. We are so grateful to you for choosing Prairie Fire Cheerleading. To those who are new to our club, we are thrilled to welcome you to PFC on behalf of our coaches and families. This year our club, our coaches, and our athletes will Own it. Every single athlete at PFC illustrates everyday that cheerleading is the single best sport for females. Athletes will see success while working towards achieving their goals. Teams train and compete routines, by building trust and commitment with fellow athletes and coaches. Our individual strengths come together to support each other team accomplish things they never dreamed of. #ownitpfc 1

2 ALL-STAR CHEERLEADING As one of the fastest growing competitive sports in Canada, Cheerleading was recently accepted by the International Sports Accord and the International University Sport Federation: on its way to be considered for the Olympics! Competitive cheerleaders do not cheer for a specific school or sports team; they cheer for themselves, their teammates, and for the love of the sport. Cheerleading improves strength, flexibility, endurance, and coordination by focusing on acrobatic stunting, tumbling and dancing. Being a valuable member of a team is a great way to build self- confidence, friendships, and develop social confidences all while working towards perfecting a two-minute routine. AGE GROUPS AND LEVELS Teams at Prairie Fire Cheerleading will be broken up according to the ISASF/USASF, the world governing body for cheerleading, age groups and ISASF levels. At PFC we are committed to offering every athlete the best cheerleading experience by offering more than one level at every age group so each athlete will be on a team where they fit in. TEAMS The ISASF/USASF rules are designed to provide the proper progression of skills from levels 1-6. These standards are used to promote best practices at every gym around the world. All efforts are made to offer the latest in best-known practices in safety, education, and ethics. Athletes will be placed on a team to be best challenged and equally provided with the opportunity to flourish. More information regarding the current ISASF/USASF age groups/rules can be found at In we have teams training 1-3 times per week. We have worked very hard to provide an opportunity for everyone! All of our teams learn skills progressively moving towards a routine that athletes can enjoy and be proud of performing. Teams with one practice per week will allow athletes to try out the sport, provide a once a week practice commitment and enjoy showcasing the skills they have learned locally. Every athlete is welcome to these teams (tiny, mini, youth). Teams with two practices per week provide more focus for those athletes who are more experienced and/or athletes who want to train twice a week (3-5hrs/wk). These teams (mini-senior) will compete provincially and nationally and every athlete is welcome. Teams with two-three practices per week are specifically for those athletes who want to commit more to the sport. These teams (youth, junior, senior) will train 2-3 times a week with focused practices on both stunting and tumbling (5-6hrs/wk). These teams compete nationally and may travel internationally to compete. Athletes on these teams are expected to commit extra time to becoming better cheerleaders. Our Open program consists of one Co-Ed team and one All-girl team training to become a Worlds level team. These teams require athletes who are at least 17 years old and available for two practices per week (5-6hrs/wk) that focus on both stunting and tumbling. These teams compete nationally and may travel internationally to compete. Athletes on these teams are expected to commit extra time to becoming better cheerleaders. #ownitpfc 2

6 FAQ s Do I have to be at every practice? Every practice is important, your team is better with you practicing at every practice. Even when you are sick or injured, you are still a valued part of our practice. You will only be asked to participate as you can, however you will need to watch for any changes that directly affect you. Absences are best managed when communicated to your coach prior to the practice time. Please have a discussion DIVAS IN CALIFORNIA with your coach anytime you have a conflict with practice. If you are absent responsibly find out what information or choreography you may have missed while absent. Can I be on more than one team? Crossovers are athletes who train and compete on two different teams. On the registration form you will be able to select if you would like to be considered as a cross over athlete. Crossovers will be selected at team assignment based on what that athlete can contribute to the team and specific needs of a team. Only a limited amount of athletes will be selected as crossovers. Crossover athletes must be prepared for additional training and additional financial commitment of $240+GST for the season. In addition, crossovers will have to pay competition fees, which vary event to event. In some cases these are significantly reduced. No secondary registration or uniform fees will be applied. Do I have to buy a uniform every year? Each PFC Athlete is required to purchase a uniform. You will own this uniform. PFC is committed to keeping this uniform design through to the end We will starting this year with a new design, so every athlete will need a new uniform which will be sized in August / September, and they will receive their uniform in November of that year. In the past lots of families chose to sell their uniforms if they need a bigger size the next season, this keeps costs lower for those who need a new uniform. Cheerleading requires athletes to wear clean white running shoes. You may purchase cheer shoes through PFC near the beginning of the season, or provide your own pair. Is fundraising required at PFC? No! We have lots of families who choose to pay for travel, uniforms, clothing, etc all on their own. However, we have a parent group at Prairie Fire who plans fundraising activities for all of those families who wish to take part. Money fundraised goes to the athlete and can be used to cover the costs associated with travel and uniforms, or can be put toward buying some sweet team gear! We are continually looking for different fundraising ideas, as well as parents to help run and organize events! If this sounds like you, join our parent board this fall! Our parent group is also a registered Non-Profit organization, so many of our athletes are able to receive funding from outside organizations such as KidsSport and JumpStart! What else does PFC offer? We do much more than just offer team practices! All of our members have access to open tumbling and stunting time on Friday nights and some afternoons. We also do fun team nights: team movie nights, sleepovers in our gym, community events, and fundraisers! #ownitpfc 6
