2 FIRST VICE PRESIDENT Barbara Freeman At this writing we are planning on attending the Marina District Convention which will be held Saturday, April 21st. More information about the convention can be found elsewhere in this newsletter. We are hoping TWC wins some awards and is recognized for all the volunteer work the members have done. Our own Deanna Hanson is the Chairman for this Convention and she has worked hard to put together a fun day for all. The next Marina District Meeting will be held at our clubhouse on Friday, May 25th. It will be the installation for the upcoming Marina District officers. This meeting will also include lunch so the donation is $10.00 instead of the regular $5.00. Before the meeting starts there will be a small breakfast. Please plan on coming and helping out. We want a good showing since it s our turn to host the meeting. Also, this summer there will be a Marina District Picnic at Chevron Park in El Segundo. Please put it on your calendar. The date is 25th. More information will follow. DCFS is hosting a Baby Shower on April 24th for the Foster teens who are expecting babies. The Redondo Beach Woman s Club hosted the baby shower last month to collect items for this event. Thanks to Janice Petrosino and her committee for an outstanding TWC Fashion Show. I thank her for all her work and support working on this big event. SECOND VP/MEMBERSHIP Sharon Saffer May s holidays include Mother s Day, Cinco De Mayo and Memorial Day. A sweet Mother s Day saying is Mothers hold their children s hand for a short while but their hearts forever. Thank you for those who have renewed their membership. If you have not paid your membership dues of $40, please bring it to the May meeting or mail to me. Thank you Anita for your excellent leadership and helping to make TWC the Heart of the Community. We greatly appreciate your time and effort. You make giving to others fun. Also I would like to thank our members for their many hours of participation. I am so proud to be a member of such a caring club. Save The Date - Tuesday, May 15 - Older American Award May is Older American Month, and our Carol Quinn will be honored along with 5 other outstanding citizens at this year s Torrance City Council meeting Tuesday, May 15, The meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m., in the Council Chamber at City Hall. Carol became a club member in1963 and is one of the founders and chairman for the Torrance Woman s Club Evening Division. She served as a Director for the TWC Executive Board and is our club's Reservation Chairman. She is very active in the Helping Hands Committee that makes Huggy Bears for children in need. She leads a similar Huggy Bear program at the YMCA. This year s theme by the Administration on Aging (AoA), is Engage at Every Age: May Congratulations Carol! SET AND SERVE Sharon Broadbent Set and Serve for May Set-up: Roberta Smith, Pam Sheerin, Janice Petrosino and Karen Delpozo Coffee & Water: Lisa-Marie Silver (Need 2 more volunteers) Decorations - Cindy Heistand Napkins - Beverly Saliba 2

3 the ladies socialize with cookies & coffee. After they are sewed together the corners need to be clipped (waah) another need is born & guess what, someone volunteers Joy Marcon takes them home, stuffs them and then brings them back to Helping Hands. MAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!! 4 Irma Chiota, Marjorie McKarns and Mary Alice Platz 10 Bette Herbst 14 Joy Marcon 15 Anne Imrie 26 Tecki Poletti 30 Maria Elena Rendon HELPING HANDS Marilyn Keller Pat Green Wow!!! What a fun & productive day we had yesterday. 15 fantastic ladies came to Helping Hands and they did unbelievable work. We are making Huggie Bears galore and so many children are going to so happy & blessed. You can't believe what team work goes into making these bears. First, Pat Green buys some beautiful cotton fabric and brings it to Helping Hands. She then irons the fabric and encourages others to help. She has a Bear pattern and plenty of pencils to trace the patterns onto the material. They are then cut out & two pieces pinned together to be sewn on the sewing machine. She makes this a lot of fun and 3 What's a Bear without a cute face. Circles the size of a dime are traced onto a special paper & material along with a pattern for the mouth. These are cut out in a unique way and pressed on to make eyes, nose & mouth. This is not always a favorite thing to do but someone will step up to the task. This is a work of art. Lois Jones was so great to take the initiative to get help to learn how to do the job. Now the fun begins. A black marker is used to paint that adorable face. A nice shiny ribbon is tied around the neck and another work of art is done. The last step is to bag them up and they are ready for delivery. They are given to Torrance Memorial Medical Center, Providence Little Company Of Mary, Rainbow Services, Fisher House and the Torrance Fire Station. A big thank you to everyone who has taken a part in making these precious bears. The women of TWC are always willing to help where ever needed. The women that make & tie Cuddle Blankets deserve a big thank you also. There is a big need for ladies to make these blankets. More of this in the next newsletter. We meet the 3rd Wednesday of the month from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM. We will be taking Cuddle Blankets and Turtle Pillow covers to the office, in Santa Monica, for the Painted Turtle Camp. More later. Pat Green and myself enjoy being chairmen of Helping Hands and are so thankful for all your help. Keep it up. HURRAH.

4 Marina District Convention What a fun day. Lots of wonderful women from all the clubs, great lunch, good entertainment and awards. Our own Deanna Hanson was the Chairman for the Convention and she did a marvelous job. She found new entertainment for us and we loved it. Here is a list of the awards for TWC: First Place in: Advocates for Children, Membership, Education, Domestic Violence, Conservation, Women s History, Leadership, Fundraising, Public Issues, International Outreach and our club Newsletter. Second Place in: Arts in the Community and Home Life Honorable Mention for Public Relations TWC Members Awards: Mary Alessandra-Cook won First Place in Creative Writing. Cindy Wall won Second Place in Creative Writing. Anita Dinicola won Second Place for Still Life Photography, Joan Sedillo won Second Place General Crafts and Bette Herbst won Second Place Trash to Treasure. Thank you to all the ladies who attended.
