1 Andy McKenna 1 Team PA Redesign Designed during my marketing internship with the Pittsburgh Penguins. I was given free reign to produce a new logo and sweaters for the Team Pennsylvania youth team co-sponsored by the Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers. The new look harkens back to historic hockey uniforms while embracing trends toward minimal striping (and, therefore, fewer layers of material and stitching) resulting in performanceenhancing sweater construction. The sweaters were used in the 2014 Brick Invitational Tournament in Edmonton, where the team improved their record from in 2013 to in The logo is still in use today. Fall 2013
2 Andy McKenna 2 Make-A-Wish Itineraries While working with the Make-A-Wish, I was tasked with creating a more effective itinerary for wish trips to Hawaii. We decided that the design had to be intuitive, organized, and adaptable. To meet those goals, I drafted a design that uses simple color principles and type hierarchy to create a structured but beautiful document. The custom color scheme works in concert with the hibiscus flower cutouts to carry a Hawaiian theme through the design. Most important for the document was that it be adaptable. That s why the entire design (per their request) was recreated in Microsoft Word. By stretching the capabilities of Word as a design tool to their absolute limit, any employee or intern can edit the itinerary in the future. Summer 2015
3 Pitt-Greensburg Soccer This set of logos was created at the direction of the new University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg mens soccer coach. We worked together to draft over 100 potential designs and color options before finalizing the first design to the left. Unfortunately, the University of Pittsburgh would not approve any new designs, so we refocused on cleaning up the paw print logo and word mark. The cleaner marks were adopted by the team in time for the season as they transitioned to a simplified look under only their second head coach in 16 years. Summer 2014 Andy McKenna 3
4 W&J Summer Marketing To help create awareness of Washington & Jefferson s Summer program and increase registration, I was commissioned to create a series of flyers to be put up around campus. Being on the cusp of Winter, I designed the flyers around the seasonal changes to create a positive connotation for the Summer Program. The images and colors used were chosen to catch the eye of the viewer and encourage further reading, as they would be among many studentplaced flyers competing for the eyes of the audience. The project was a success, as enrollment in the Summer Program increased by 52% for Spring 2013 Andy McKenna 4
5 W&J Summer Website As a student worker at my college, Washington & Jefferson, I was tasked with researching ways of increasing the usability and organization of the W&J Summer Program website. To do this, I gathered information on web UX and UI, and found examples of good design from both competing and noncompeting schools. Once I had completed my research, I compiled it into a PDF to instruct the Dean on ways he could modify the Summer site to be more effective. 6 Andy McKenna 6 W&J Soccer Concept This concept was inspired by a problem which plagues many smaller NCAA schools - lack of originality in branding. The badge replaces a Juventus replica with a fresh, clean design inspired by the family crests of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson (after whom the college is named) and the iconic Old Main The kits echo the badge with subtle sublimation of Jefferson s most prominent crest mark on the chest and Washington s stripes on the sleeves, allowing the shirts to remain clean while retaining all the meaning of the badge.
