The next meeting of the Palos R/C Flying Club will be held Wednesday June 1, 7:30 P.M. at the Willow Springs Senior Center. *** ANNUAL AIR SHOW June 5 *** FUN FLY June 26 *** SCALE AIR SHOW July 10 *** The May meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM. by Ed Jongsma. The Pledge of Allegiance was said. Ed Borkowski read the minutes of the April meeting. Brian Zygadlo read the treasury report. Ed Jongsma thanked everyone that helped with the safety fence repair and installation. It was reported that a refundable $250 deposit is required by the CCFPD for reserved events. Chuck Junkroski announced that the Fun Fly was rescheduled for June 26. The original event was canceled due to bad weather. There was no report on indoor flying activity. Joe Gavenda invited all to the Glider Event. Ed Jongsma mentioned the audit of the treasury indicated all was well. The Night Flying Event was announced and the field would be open from Sunset until 1 am. A new controlled area is being considered so drones and fixed wing aircraft would not interfere with each other. There were 2 new members. Frank Castelli and Mike Muszynski. 2 John Martico donated some old planes and equipment free for the taking. Moon Over Morrill Meadow By Joe Felonk On May 21st our club hosted the first ever night flight. The event was a great success. The sun set a little after 8 P.M. just as the full moon was rising. By 9:30 P.M. the parking lot was almost full with flyers and spectators. We had 28 AMA members sign in. They did a good job of keeping the sky full of illuminated aircraft. The runway perimeter and taxi way was outlined with glow lights to guide the pilots back to the runway. Almost all made it back in one piece. Dennis Miendersma did a great job of lighting the pavilion for the evening. The lighted pavilion was another sight we never see. A hot dog dinner was available to anyone who wanted to take a walk over to the pavilion. Everyone was well fed with a cup cake to boot, thanks to Joe Zs lady friend Trudy. The Bernards brought a taco dip and chips for people to snack on. The club sold 60 raffle tickets at $5 each for a trainer that was donated to the club. Judy Sheehan did a great job making sure they all were sold. The winning ticket was pulled around 10:30 pm with the last ticket left in the can being the winner. 59 losing names were pulled and read with the winning ticket belonging to club member Jamie Rodriguez. The hard core members stayed until the end of the event at 1 A.M. Sunday morning. A big thank you needs to go out to everyone who helped make the event happen. Quite a few people inquired as to when the next night flight will take place. Maybe the next night flight will be held under a new moon. 3 Some Assembly Required Ron Trujillo Last month a friend of mine crashed his 45 size ARF PT 19 at SAC Flying Field through no fault of his (Yeah Right). Anyway, he told me about how much damage there was to the plane and how he might just trash it. Well not being one to trash a plane too quickly, I told him that I would stop by SAC for a visit and to bring the plane for me to examine. Well, you can see from the pictures how it was brought to the field. I examined the damaged and told him I would give it a try and see if it could be rebuilt. The fuse was splintered, but there was just enough to begin rebuilding. By chance the bulkheads broke clean and were really not damaged. That was a good thing. It was mostly just putting it back together like a puzzle and I had the most of the pieces. The main problem with ARFs once crashed; there are no plans for reference to rebuild from. I mostly rely on some of the main rules for rebuilding and I quote THAT LOOKS ABOUT RIGHT. The second rule and I again quote YEAH THAT LOOKS STRAIGHT. The third rule IT MAY BE A LITTLE HEAVIER NOW, BUT THE WEIGHT HELPS IT FLY BETTER. There are a few more rules, but we don t need to go into that right now. So after a little careful balsa surgery and a few special words which I won t mention here, it began to look like a PT 19 again. Basically, not too bad of a rebuild, although not one of my better jobs, but it will fly again, I hope. I will give it back to my friend to finish sanding, covering, and reinstalling the radio, tank and finally the engine. I hope he balances it due to it being a little heavier then when he initially flew it. One thing for sure, I won t be around when he flies it again. I ll be at Palos lol.

4 Sunny Weather At The Glider Contest... By Joe Gavenda C.D. The 2016 Palos Glider Contest was held Sunday, May 22 under beautiful, cloudless skies. It started with moderate winds that increased in velocity entirely out of the north to north east. Without a cloud in the sky and pretty steady winds there was virtually no thermal activity to be found. It wasn t the weather that I had ordered but it made for some interesting and challenging flying!!! We had 11 pilots and airplanes register for the contest. We used 2 high starts and 1 winch. Four of the planes were electric powered gliders. The powered gliders didn t use the high starts but climbed under power until the altitude was estimated to be that of using a high start or winch. There were 4 events scheduled. First a duration flight, then 2 pylon or spot landing events then the last duration. But although the weather was beautiful, it didn t cooperate. Duration times were miserable. We shortened the distance between the pylons, then shortened the laps from two to one and a half. Finally we eliminated one of the pylon events just to keep flying activity going rather than flying up the high start all day. The final duration of the day was miserable with a high time of 1:47 posted by Stan Flynn. Stan also had the highest time of the day at 6:40 on his first duration of the day. First place winner is Stan Flynn, second place Joe Gavenda and third place Axel Schulz. Congratulations to the winners and a big thank you to all of the many, many members and nonmembers who helped make the day a success. There are a lot of details and work not hard work to complete the contest and I can t show my appreciation enough to those who stepped up and volunteered to get the tasks completed. I think that in spite of the lousy flying weather, everyone had a good time. It's a bird...it's a plane...it's an ornithopter??? Mike Sula with his parrot.
