2 Katherine Ewing President Unit 505 Board of Directors Hello from your new Unit Board, First, a big thank you to Brian Masunaga as the past President and Board member. He organized our Unit Board and budget better than any other President we ve had. His enthusiasm for bridge and the betterment of Unit 505 is wonderful. We will miss him and hope his business adventures in Wyoming work out for him and not keep him from the bridge table for very long. We will also miss outgoing Board members, Mike Cozart, Luke Shenoy and Sheila Ross. We thank them for all their efforts. They too have a love for bridge and helped to make our Unit better for all. Your Board has a few new members and new officers for Welcome to the new members: Maurie Studin, Marie Leonardini, Jim Houghton, Dave Willmott and Katherine Ewing. Returning members, Debbie Leggett, Joyce Sweeny (elected for another 2 year term), Lucy Brown, Pat Ingoglia, Zelna Morrow and Miriam Steinberg. Congratulations to our 2016 officers: Debbie Leggett, Secretary, Joyce Sweeney, Treasurer, Dave Willmott, Vice President and Katherine Ewing, President. (See photo and contact information for Board members on the next page.) At our first meeting the new board determined our goal is to hold successful Unit and Sectional games for our members/players. To do this we all have to work together. To start, at our February Board meeting, we ve invited the Club Owners/Managers to join us. Our plan is to get to know them better, find out their needs/concerns and let them know ours, so that we can help each other. All of you are also important to the Unit. Feel free to direct your questions or suggestions to any board member. We have some surprises for you at the Unit Game on February 14, (See flyer on page 4.) The pot luck will be side dishes as the Unit Board will supply a main course. Watch for more fun at the Valentine s Day Unit Game. There are 22 Units in District 21 and we have the largest ACBL membership. This year your Board will strive to work together with you to make our Unit the best in the District, too! May the bridge cards be good to all of you. Happy Valentine s Day! 2

8 SANDY MURPHY LIFE MASTER Sandy Murphy, of Shingle Springs, a frequent player at Folsom and Foothill Bridge Clubs, became a Life Master at the Regional in Monterey on Fri. Jan.8, Sandy needed 1.5 gold points and earned 5.26 gold playing in the Thursday-Friday Knock Out. Sandy s partner was Joan Bailey of Placerville, and her other teammates were Barbara Wheeler of Sacramento and Barbara s sister, Patricia Zavadil of Denver. Barbara Wheeler D21 HOSPITALITY Celebrating 10 years as District 21 Hospitality hostesses... I present you Sally Wheeler-Valine and Marilyn Minden. CONGRATULATIONS! TERI GOLD & MARY RUBY & GINNY, too! Teri Smoot is now a Gold Life Master. She achieved this at the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina Regional at the end of December and beginning of January, playing with Mary Ose. Mary Ose became a Ruby Life Master at the same time. Teri should also be commended for her accomplishment of earning the most, or second most, points during the week of any woman player who was not playing with a professional. Way to go, Teri! Meanwhile, Ginny Curtis was the top point winner in the tournament of the 0 to 750 category. Way to go, Ginny! Teri, Mary & Ginny on the beach. 8
9 MONTEREY REGIONAL The three of us (Terri, Mary and Ginny), won two events with our men's auxiliary. One with Jerry Nakamura and a KO with Dennis Uthe. We had a great week in Monterey, CA. Restaurant recommendations: Passion Fish and Rio Grill. More Restaurant Reviews with Mary Ose... In Myrtle Beach, South Carolina we ate at Aspen Grill. First picture is the grouper. Wonderful with lots of different flavors and great textures. The second picture is sea scallops with fried spinach (also wonderful and very interesting) and risotto. 13 Spotlight on Katherine Ewing The Reno NABC is rapidly approaching March 10-20, After a very informative conversation with Co-Chairperson Katherine Ewing, who also serves as the Unit 505 representative to the District as well as our newly elected Unit President, I thought it might be helpful to clarify the events and hopefully encourage you all to attend! Feature articles interviewing people around Unit 505. Miriam Steinberg is a Unit 505 Board member. She may be reached at: mirsteinberg@ yahoo.com Contact Miriam with your suggested interviewee or a topic of interest you d like explored. Players can choose from a multitude of different games which include: 1. Intermediate (Non-Life Master / Newcomer events) where players can earn red points. 2. Gold rush events (gold and red points). 3. Regional events (gold and red points). 4. NABC event (gold, red and platinum points). Intermediate / Newcomer (I/N) players may play in side games that are specifically limited to those with under 300 points. Gold Rush pairs, another good option, are stratified 750/500/200. There will also be stratified 299er Swiss Teams on most days. A special bonus event will be BridgePlus, which is a free lesson and 14 free deals on March 12, 13 and 14 at 10 am. (This is designed mostly for the more beginning players). In addition, Intermediate players may opt to compete in any Regional or NABC event that does not require pre-qualification. Events that are open to all players include: Stratified Open Pairs (side games) Stratiflighted Daylight Open Pairs Knock Out Teams (usually 2 days) Swiss Teams Stratiflighted Swiss Teams Stratified Side IMP Pairs Compact Braketed Knock-out Teams Zip Knock-out Teams 3 Day Side Game Series 12
14 Spotlight on Katherine Ewing Page 2 Stratified Open Pairs: pairs play all other pairs. Different points are rewarded for A/B/C stratification (although B/C players can earn more points if they rank in a higher stratification). Stratiflighted Open Pairs: Players are divided into two separate games according to their points. These groups are then stratified. Stratified Side IMP Pairs: A pairs game which scores using IMP s instead of match points. Knock Out Teams: Usually a 2 day 4 session event, with approximately 24 boards. After players lose a 24 board round they are knocked out of the game. Compact Bracketed Knock Out Teams: Usually two 12 board matches. Zip Knock-Out Teams: A faster and shorter session knock out game played late at night. 3 Day Side Game Series: Pairs who play 2 or more sessions will have their top highest scores averaged. The top winners may earn gold points. Some NABC events require pre-qualification (such as by winning 1st or 2nd in a Regional Tournament). Such events include the following Baldwin North American Pairs 3-9 Norman kay Platinum Pairs Leventritt Silver Ribbon Pairs Additional NABC events that do not indicate pre-qualification include: Lebhar IMP Pairs Vanderbilt Knock Out Teams Rockwell Mixed Pairs Silodor Open Pairs Smith Life Master Women s Pairs NABC and Fast Pairs Jacoby Open Swiss Teams Machlin Women s Swiss Teams
15 Spotlight on Katherine Ewing Page 3 The NABC registration desk will offer gift bags. In addition, they will award prizes to the top winners of an event. The Intermediate/Novice will have its own registration at the El Dorado, where special gifts will also be available along with its own reception. There will be separate partnership desks at both locations. Each day, a Daily Bulletin will list the previous day s winners, announce daily events, including expert speakers and also list the schedule for the following day. Kibitzing can be another exciting option. Most good players according to our chairperson, will allow kibitzers if asked first and may even be willing to answer post-game questions. Some international events are televised and can be watched in a separate room. Meeting players from all over the U.S. and world is an additional bonus. I am looking forward to meeting up with old high school friends from St. Louis as well as a long-lost cousin from Florida. I hope to make new acquaintances along the way, too! I hope many of you will join me at the NABC and proudly represent Unit 505 (I will be on the look-out for interesting dinner company!). And I would like to give a big Thanks to Katherine Ewing for her hard work in making this event an exciting reality!

17 At last some good news about out new site. All of the information has been turned into the county and we are now just waiting on the permits. Even this makes me excited. Albert said it could take a short as one week to get the permits, but thinks it will be a little longer. However, after three and a half months, any news about the move is better than nothing. The contractor is ready to go just as soon as he has the permits in hand. Monday, Dec 28 Gary Soules and John McMurdie had a 73.31% game. They are two of the top player in our entire area. The really fun part of this story is that one week earlier they played and had a 49.31% game! So, players this should give you a lot of hope. Even the good players can have a bad day. I can attest to the fact that Mr. McMurdie was quite tired on the day with the low score. A good night s sleep is a must in order to play well at bridge. So, the following Monday they have a great score. These two men have been friends for many years and it was so wonderful to see them get this good of a game. Congratulations to both of you. Here are two more of our top players who know how to play bridge too! Ted Muller and George Lim had a 71.53% game on Monday, January 18 th. These two do not play often together, but this just shows that if you put two very good players together, they come up with a great game. Ted plays a lot of his bridge with Albert Chow, John Blubaugh, and of course his wife Barbara. George also plays with Barbar Muller, but most of his games are with Marty Rodgers. The two of them can be seen almost every Friday and most of those days they come in first. And finally, two more guys with a huge game of 75.69%. One of the interesting things about these two, is they play in the Invitational games, Mon, Wed, and Fri. Both play with several different partners and will usually win, place, or show not matter who they are playing with. You can see that twinkle in Tom s eyes (the one on the left) and I want to tell you it is pure ornereness. Tom has quite a sense of humor and he enjoys entertaining the players. Joel is a little quieter, but still has a lot of fun at the bridge table. Nice going guys this was really a very excellent game! 16
18 January was also a month for birthdays. Laura Mering s birthday is Jan 7, but we celebrated it on the 6 th. Besides the cake, Nick Smiley brought in his delicious buns again. We had pork, chicken, and the herb one stuffed with hot dongs. The bread tastes like home made! There was also Laura s favorite lemon dream Jell-o. Annee Christensen celebrated her birthday on Thursday Jan. 14 th, one day after her actual birth date. She was surprised with her favorite cake chocolate, chocolate, and chocolate. This was a two layer cake with a yummy cream cheese filling. To me Annee looks exactly like she did when I met her approximately twenty-five years ago. Some people just do not age and she is certainly one of them. Tell us your secret, Annee! She did leave on this day to enjoy lunch with her daughter, but returned in time to get some cake and there was enough to take home and share with her husband. Gary Soules will have a birthday on January 28 th and Joy O Dell will have one on the 29 th. Happy Birthday to all of you and we wish you many more. In February there will be two club championships. One on Monday, Feb. 15 and the second one is Friday, Feb. 19. Mark your calendars and get your favorite partners lined up for these dates. These are the times you can earn extra points. And of course Valentine s Day is Feb 14 th. I am certain there will be some special dessert around this day for all of you to enjoy. Don t forget to share the day with the ones you love and of course don t forget to say I love you to Mom, your wife/husband, members of your family, and to your favorite bridge partners. Defense Lesson Class. Remember the Defense class with Takeout Doubles begins on Feb 2 at 9:30. It is not too late to sign up! 17

I tell you it is DEFENSE. This class will teach you when to lead an ace, or better yet, when not to lead an ace. Think about it do you play most of the hands or do you defend the most? I would say we defend much more than we get to play. So this is a much needed class to guide you in your journey of being a duplicate bridge player.

Complete tournament details are available on the ACBL website under upcoming NACBs ( Our club will host our half of the annual exchange with the Roseville Sun City Duplicate Bridge Club on Wed., Feb. 24th in the Orchard Creek Lodge Ballroom. The cost will be $15.00 per person, which includes the brunch and bridge package. See or call Kay Kerenyi ( ) to reserve your spot for this event. This year once again the education committee will arrange to have free lessons at 11:45 a.m. before our Wed. games. They will begin on Feb. 2nd with a panel discussion. Bring your friends and bridge questions to the event and be prepared to learn the secrets of bridge strategy from our resident experts. Our club always welcomes new players to any our games. However, many social bridge players may shun duplicate because they don t understand the seemingly ritualistic use of bidding boxes, player movements, card placement after each trick is played and the all important card holders, or boards used to transport the pre-dealt hands from table to table. In order to remedy that situation, Judy Beck ( ) has volunteered to educate newcomers on these fundamentals. Give her a call if someone you know would like to become a duplicate bridge player. Happy Valentine s Day and may you have lots of hearts... and clubs, spades and diamonds this month. or call club president, Sharon Neff

28 Richard Thomas Cleary III June 5, 1939 December 31, 2015 Tom played bridge. A regular partner was Judy Baskin, especially at tournaments. Peggy Hatley, being Peggy Hatley, had a desire that Donna Pitt meet Tom. Tom meets Donna at Peggy s. They fall in love. Tom gains a new bridge partner; Judy mostly loses Tom as a bridge partner but never as a friend. Tom marries Donna, December 28, Unfortunately, it was a very short but truly sweet love of nearly three years; two years as husband and wife. Tom the man. I only knew Tom for 3 years but he sure made an impression on me; as he did on most people he met. The one thing I noticed in Tom was the sparkle in his eyes. It was always there. I can see it even now. It spoke of the man Tom was and will be remembered as. Tom enjoyed life, and meeting people. He truly enjoyed meeting people and making friends. From his family I learned he was open and accepting of all persons regardless of any characteristic except character, of which he was an astute discerner. This was certainly true at the bridge table. Tom strongly supported the people and things he believed in. Tom supported both the Folsom and Foothill Bridge Centers. Attendance increased appreciably after Tom found the two centers and began playing bridge there. Many Four Seasons (community Tom lived in) social bridge players now regularly play duplicate bridge. I believe there is a correlation. Foothill Bridge Center will host a Memorial Game in honor of Tom Thursday, March 3rd, at 10 am. 28
