Katherine Ewing, President Unit 505 Board of Directors Hope everyone had a wonderful Halloween, not too many Tricksters, and you are now ready to play more bridge. Your Unit Board met on October 22, 2017, before the Unit Game. Many items were discussed, including T-shirts available for the caddies, imp pair Unit Games, and a Pro/Am Unit Game. So look for these in the new year. I am sad to say that at the September Sectional, for the first time in many years, we had a loss. We were down 71 tables from last year. We almost had enough 299 ers for a separate section at the Unit game more players means a separate section for you to play in! If we continue to lose money we will have fewer Sectionals and/or offer less at them. Please support the Unit. We ve also started preparations for the December Sectional at La Sierra Community Center. See flyer on page 8. Please save the date and plan now to attend! The December Holiday party is December 10, at the Sacramento Bridge Center. This will be a team game with catered food. Please look for the flyer on page 10 for more information. Reservations are required. All had a good time at the October Unit Game. CONGRATULATIONS!!! to the winners listed on page 8. New members to our Unit should be receiving a welcome letter and a coupon to use at your first Unit Game. If you need a partner see the flyer in this newsletter or on our website to contact the Partnership Chair. Nominations closed November 1 st for our Unit Board elections. Thank you to all who volunteered to run. It is very rewarding to be on our Unit Board; loads of work, but many more times full of fun. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! See you at the bridge table. 2

Katherine Ewing Incumbent I joined the WBC in 1977 in Doncaster, England and the ACBL in 1979, becoming a Life Master in 1983 and currently a Gold Life Master. Then moved to CA in 1984 and became a Unit Representative to the District 21 Board in the late 1980's, becoming President of District 21 and continue as a member of the District Executive Committee for 10 years. SF NABC 2007 Registration Chair. SF NABC 2016 Reno NABC Co-Chair Volunteer Hospitality Chair. I am currently honored to be your Unit Board President for the last 2 years and in prior years I have been a secretary and treasurer. I look forward to continuing with an excellent board as we move forward. Marc Grunseth My regular tournament bridge partner, Miriam, suggested that I run for the Unit Board. She sets high standards for service and writing which I strive to attain. My family played cards of all kinds, but my mom's enthusiasm for "party" bridge was electric and influential. My first unplanned competitive play was at an Army Officers' Club. After a one club, 5 clubs, six clubs bidding sequence, my opponent said mine was a stupid bid. When I, a 2nd Lieutenant, made the contract, it struck me as advisable to avoid gloating since my very rude opponent was a Colonel. I will bring good humor, discretion and a sound work ethic to whatever position is most beneficial to the board and the membership. Margaretha Logos Incumbent I look forward to serving once again on the board. With my CFO experience I have provided audit services to Unit 505 and served as Treasurer. Serving in this capacity at the Unit level, as well at the Folsom Bridge Center, allows me to give back to the game of bridge I so enjoy.

Sharon Neff Most of my working life was very fast-paced. Add a host of volunteer activities like organizing soccer leagues as an AYSO commissioner, managing softball teams and serving on the advisory Commission for the Los Angeles Olympics there just wasn t much time for bridge. I played two or three social games a year. When I retired and moved to Lincoln Hills, I heard about duplicate bridge. Sounded interesting! I quickly signed up for bridge lessons and was off to a new challenge. There s always more to learn and you never get everything right so you have to keep trying. I served as President of the Lincoln Hills Duplicate Bridge Club for two years. After a year off, I am running for the Board for the 2018 year. In 2016, I was Registration Chair for the Reno Spring NABC which proved to be loads of fun. My life is still fast-paced but now bridge is a major factor in my schedule. I enjoy working with our local Club and attending the District meetings but I would like to learn more about out Unit 505. Craig Stalker Jody Blubaugh's endorsement of Craig Stalker... Four years ago, a friend asked me if I would play bridge with someone who hadn't played in 45 years. Reluctantly, I said I would. Well, it didn't take long for this retired attorney to catch up. Craig read every bridge book I had and bought more. He started playing bridge every Monday with a long time friend, Ed Estberg. They did well and bridge became the challenge he was looking for. He approached bridge the way he plays golf -- with all his heart and soul. Craig does everything well and is very devoted to the game. He is friendly, intelligent, and very accomplished. He will make a great Board Member. Harry Struthers Berkeley was my home town and also where, because my parents needed bridge opponents on Sunday nights when their "regulars" were not available, I learned and began playing Bridge. It wasn't until Linda and I moved back to Sacramento 15 years ago that I ventured in the intimidating world of "Duplicate". Now I combine 2 days of bridge with 2 days of golf and 2 days working to provide a fulfilling schedule. It appears the challenge for bridge is to attract new players and tournament participants. Maybe my experience in marketing could be helpful in the that endeavor.

Club Championship and Unit Games award more points! Invite a friend! Six Annoying Things At Bridge by Sam Sandusky #1 Lateness: Showing up three minutes after game time. Be early and make life easier for the director. #2 Talking: Talking during play and, especially loud talking is extremely distracting and rude. #3 Not passing boards: the N/S partner who is not in charge of scoring should be in charge of passing three boards to the lower numbered table. #4 Eating: In a club game it is ok to eat at the table but do not put a plate or beverage on the table. #5 No convention card or incomplete card: Each player should have a complete an accurate card available for viewing by the opponents. Have your card pointed to your opponent not to you. You may not refer to your card during the bidding. #6 Phones The most annoying of all. PLEASE PEOPLE, put your phones on vibrate, airplane mode or off! Do not answer a phone unless it is an emergency. Clubs should institute penalties for repeat offenders, perhaps flogging or point reduction. If you aren t sure, ask for clarification of rules. Following these helps make the experience fun for everyone! 9 RACE FOR THE POINTS! 11 John Jefferson and Gary Soules had a great time in the Reno Regional. Gary and John teamed up with Bill Harker, Mark Ralph and Bob Etter to play "rolling" bracket I knockouts in the Reno Regional, which means you play knockouts until you are out of Regional to play in. John won two knockouts and was second in a third for masterpoints, while Gary won one knockout, was second in another, won a morning Swiss and was third in the Saturday open pairs for points. Playing against Chris Compton's team in the second round of Knockout #1 this was the first hand: Gary held xx-qjxxx-763-aqx. With both sides vulnerable his left hand opponent opened 1 diamond and I overcalled 2nt, which we play as showing the minors. Gary's RHO passed and Gary jumped to 4 diamonds! My hand was AQx-void-KQJ10x-KJxxx. So I bid 4 spades, showing a good hand with a spade fragment. Gary now cue bid 5 clubs and I cue bid 5 hearts. Gary now bid 6 clubs and I bid 6 diamonds. My RHO had 2 aces, so he doubled. 6 diamonds was cold, so we started out with plus 1540 on the first hand. Our opponents played 3 clubs making six for plus 170, so we were plus 1360 for 16 imps on the first hand. After winning this semifinal match the directors told us we could arrange to play the final any time we wanted to, which meant we could play the final Wednesday morning and start the Tuesday/Wednesday knockout that afternoon. This also meant that it was possible to win 2 bracket I knockouts on the same day (Wednesday). We did win both knockouts on Wednesday, but on the way poor Gary had an accident. He arranged to sit out a half to play in a side game with his wife while we played without him (5 person team). When the directors discovered this, they disqualified him from the Tuesday/Wednesday knockout! So Bob, Mark, Bill and I played the semis and finals without Gary and won the event. Unfortunately, Gary wasn't able to share in the 40 masterpoint award. History has a way of repeating. We made it to the Thursday/Friday knockout finals, but lost in the finals to come in second. In the meantime Gary and Bob Etter arranged to play in the Friday/Saturday morning sideways Swiss. (There is always a competition on our team to be the team member that wins the most masterpoints in the Regional). Neither of them happened to notice that there was a time overlap between the Saturday compact knockouts and the sideways Swiss. So Gary and Bob were disqualified from playing with the team on Saturday! (Side note: The Encyclopedia of Bridge has notified us there will be a new entry in the next edition: The Doofus Effect: Being disqualified twice in one Regional because of playing in too many simultaneous events.) 11

IN THE NEWS! JIM BOWMAN Mary Ose writes, We certainly all have our health challenges. Jim's came in a very unexpected manner. He has been very open about his experience, maintaining his terrific sense of humor throughout. A local news team learned of his situation and interviewed him. In case you missed the airing, here is the link to the news clip: A Piece of Cake! by Dave Vidiver Judi Callaham is closing in on 70 (maybe she's there, but I know enough not to overestimate a woman's age). She suffered a stroke thirty years ago that deprived her of full use of her left side. She's also had more than dozen surgeries for leiomyosarcoma, a cancer that causes spontaneous tumor growth, and has required the removal of so many of her organs, that she tells the anesthesiologist to remind the surgeon there's no need to go hunting for them when it comes time to close her up. And this morning - October 16th - she did what most of the rest of us couldn't do, and wouldn't even try. She finished the long - and hard - way to Machu Picchu. You can take a tour bus. Judi walked. The Inca trail is miles of grueling up and down over 4 days, climbing and descending nearly 9,000 feet, almost all of it between 9,000 and 13,700 feet above sea level, where oxygen is a rare commodity. It is rated among the 20 most dangerous trails in the world, where a 4,000 foot climb in the rain on the second day (and a 2,000 foot descent) over smooth stones can come to a sudden end on a slippery pile of alpaca dung and a torn ACL. Oh yeah, her (very fit) husband Bill went, too. I'll bet he did more whimpering than she did, even though he got to use two trekking poles compared to her one! 29

Saturday and Sunday Games at SBC Award 3-4 Times the Usual Masterpoints Charity Games 299 r Games Classes This is possible because these are Charity Games. The director donates $4 per table to an ACBL designated charity. The Saturday noon game now has 2 sections. Joy O Dell and John Hughes have instituted a 299er game. Last Saturday there were 6 tables in the 299er section and 10 of the 12 pairs received between 0.88 and 2.33 MPs, which was won by Becky Tindall and Cassandra Gerth. The section is directed by John Hughes, and Joy O Dell gives a minute lecture ahead of time at 11 am. Ali Topcú directs the Open section which had 7 tables, and the award was based on the total of 13 tables with the winning pair, Teri Smoot and Enlow Ose, receiving 2.48 MPs. Judi Callaham on another hike, this time with Dave Willmott in Markleeville, California. Judi hiked 3 miles up Thunder Mountain. That sign ought to get your attention! Andy Burgdorf was in the Halloween mood as a Witch. 30

The Final Salute by Judy M. Zimmerman When my husband, a retired Air Force officer, died 22 years ago I became curious about the significance of a twenty-one-gun salute and the familiar, haunting melody of Taps. The funeral director promised to research the information and send me a fax. The following is a summary of that fax: THE TWENTY-ONE-GUN SALUTE The origin of the 21-gun salute is lost in the shadows of history, but it is believed it started as a multiple of the number seven's astrological and Biblical significance. Seven planets had been identified and the phases of the moon changed every seven days. The Bible states that God rested on the seventh day after creation. Three was the number of omnipotence and the deity. Therefore three times seven was the ultimate honor that could be bestowed on a VIP. The impressive 21-gun salute is rendered on the arrival or departure of the President of the United States, the sovereign or chief of state of a foreign country, and the member of a reigning royal family. A 21-gun salute is fired at one-minute intervals on the day of internment of a president, ex-president, or president-elect. Such a salute is also rendered at five-second intervals as a final farewell at the graveside of all soldiers who served this country with pride and honor. TAPS During the Civil War, the American armies used the French Tattoo ("Lights Out") for Taps, which had been used in Europe to notify soldiers to cease an evening's drinking and return to their garrisons. It was sounded an hour before the final bugle call to end the day by extinguishing fires and lights. But this call did not suit General Daniel Butterfield of the Union Army. With the help of the brigade bugler, Oliver North, General Butterfield wrote Taps one night in July 1862 while in camp at Harrison's Landing, Virginia. He considered it a more peaceful and soothing call to signal the end of the day's activities. (The last five measures of Tattoo resembles taps). Apparently, Taps was also first used in connection with military funerals during the same campaign. It was unsafe to fire the customary three volleys over the grave due to the enemy's proximity, so the sounding of Taps was substituted as the most appropriate ceremony. These words were written for Taps: Fades the light, And afar Goeth day, Cometh night; And a star, Leadeth all, Speedeth all, To their rest.
