Katherine Ewing, President Unit 505 Board of Directors We had a great turn out for the February Unit game. Thank you all for attending and bringing so many delicious dishes. Fun was had by all. Congratulations to those who scratched. Our next Unit Game will be March 12, 2017 at the Folsom Bridge Center. Another Pot Luck and I am so looking forward to seeing what all you bring. We will be having a Unit Board meeting that day, so if any of you have some questions or suggestions, please let a Board member know. Our Non Life Master Sectional had very good attendance. We are getting experience at running the NLM Sectional, this being our first and we appreciate everyone s suggestions. The next one should be even better and hopefully we will have a full house once again. It s so nice to hear you all enjoyed yourself and some won silver points, yippee and congratulations. Once again there have been complaints about slow playing. As you all know, duplicate bridge is a timed event, usually one gets about 7 ½ minutes per board, hence 15 minutes per round if playing two boards. If you find yourself behind a slow pair, please let the Director know. I m sure they already know they are behind, and if you say something to them, it might make them feel even worse, or angry. It is up to the Director of the event to remind slow players and give them a late play or skip the board. At a Sectional or Regional if this occurs and you feel the Director did not help, you have the option of writing the ACBL, reporting the Director s name, event and section number explaining your situation. It is my understanding that they will discuss this with the Director and let them know they need to be more aware of the slow players. Hope you have a great St. Patrick s Day. See you at the bridge table, katherine 2

DECLARER PLAY Eddie Kantar s Warm-up Tips Sam Sandusky 1) Review the bidding, including original passes. Sam Sandusky Unit 505 Board member, Sam is also teaching classes at Sacramento Bridge Center. He is the Unit Board s Education Chair. Thank you, Sam! 2) Remember the opening lead. (Repeat it to yourself). Low spot cards are easy to forget. 3) Know your opponents lead and signaling conventions BEFORE play begins. It is better not to have to ask revealing questions later. 4) Do not get into a habit of pulling a card out, putting it back, etc. Make up your mind which card you are going to play and then play it. 5) Assume your partner is playing the hand and a spade is led. When you put your dummy down, put down your spades LAST. This forces your partner to look over your beautiful dummy before playing too quickly to the first trick. 6) Assume you are dummy in a no-trump contract. During the bidding both you and partner have bid hearts. When the lead is made, do not put your hearts down on your extreme right. Partners have been known to lose it and play the hand as if hearts were trumps. (Never me!) 7) Form a battle plan, any plan is better than no plan. 8) Count everything in sight, their points, their distribution and their tricks. And do not forget to count your points and your tricks. 9

A request was made by Unit Tournament Director, David Willmott to to clarify if the Stop Card use had been discontinued or if ACBL was considering discontinuing it. Here is their response: The rumor that the Stop Card will be discontinued is constantly in circulation, but as of this time there is no move by ACBL to terminate its use. Used correctly, the Stop Card serves a useful purpose. Unfortunately, many players either ignore it when it is properly used or, worse, use it incorrectly, which may be what you are referring to when you say it is seen as a source of cheating. The ACBL Codification states: 3.5 The skip bid warning may not be used to alert partner that a strength-showing bid is being made or not being made. The warning should be used all the time. The tournament director may assess a procedural penalty (Law 90) for failure to comply. Newer players often misunderstand the correct use of the Stop Card and use it to indicate to their partner that they are making a skip bid, having never been told the reason the stop card should be used. Education is important to try to curtail such behavior. As far as whether clubs can discontinue use of the Stop Card, the codification weighs in with: 3.10 The skip bid warning is effective for all ACBL sanctioned events. For sanctioned games at clubs, the club may elect to discourage its use and require no mandated pause. This, along with ACBL's general policy giving Clubs a great deal of leeway in the running of their games, suggests that curtailing use of the Stop Card (or even removing them from the bidding boxes, presumably with an explanation to the players of why this was done) would be an acceptable action. Here's a link to the Codification for your information: Let me know if you have any further questions. Lynn Yokel Tournament Director and Rulings Box Associate 12
ACBL Membership Dues Effective April 1, 2017 New member * One year $39 Two years $74 Three years $87 (only $29 per year) ACBL will honor the pricing on the 2017 instant membership forms only if received in hardcopy with payment by check or money order. New members joining online or by phone as of April 1, 2017 will be subject to this new pricing structure. Regular membership One year $49 Two years $94 Three years $117 (only $39 per year) Life Master Service Fee One year $46 Two years $88 Three years $108 (only $36 per year) Household One year $82 Two years $160 Three years $216 Patron One year (indiv) $275 One year (house) $375 Three years (indiv) $750 Three years (house) $1050 NEW MEMBERSHIP FEES reward multi-year sign-ups ACBL has implemented a new membership dues structure effective April 1. The framework emphasizes the savings available when signing up for multi-year options, according to Robert Hartman, the organization's chief executive. Hartman says, "Essentially, members who were previously joining or renewing for one year won't see any increase when they opt, instead, to sign up for three years." In addition, signing up for multiple-year plans will save our members time, save the League up to $80,000 in reduced printing and postage expense and even save some trees along the way. In addition to the one-year membership, two-year and three-year options have been added for new members. "For the first time, new members have the opportunity to receive the new member discount for three full years. This new feature is sure to be popular with the 11,000-plus new members who join annually." One, two-year and three-year alternatives now exist for the regular, Life Member and household levels. "But it's joining or renewing for three years that offers the greatest savings across the board," says Hartman, who notes that currently, 43% of ACBL members are already on a three-year plan. New members will realize a discount of 26% over making annual $49 payments. Regular members and life members will realize savings of 20% and 22% respectively. Junior One year $5 13

By Dick Proffitt Our club hosted the annual exchange with the Roseville Sun City Duplicate Bridge Club on Wed., Feb. 22 in the Orchard Creek Lodge Ballroom. The event got underway with brunch at 10:30 am. Then after brunch, 37 tables of enthusiastic bridge players began to compete. When the game was over, it was apparent that the Lincoln Hills club made full use of the home field advantage by winning both directions (N-S and E-W) in all three sections. To be fair, it should be noted that Roseville had far fewer pairs in the competition and several were close second place finishers. The Roseville Sun City club will have its turn to reciprocate when it hosts the other half of the exchange this summer. For the eager tournament players there will be a sectional tournament in Chico running March 17-19, 2017 in the Eagles Hall at 1940 Mulberry. More patient tournament followers will wait for our own Spring Sectional in Carmichael at the La Sierra Community Center on May 6 and 7, See the flyer in this newsletter. Then the week of May 8-14, 2017 will be STaC week and you will be able to earn silver points while playing at your home club. You may obtain tournament details and flyers for each of these tournaments on the ACBL website ( The SCLH duplicate bridge club is an invitational club, and games are open to all residents of Sun City Lincoln Hills and their invited guests. Our games are played in the Kilaga Springs Lodge on Wednesdays at 12:30 pm (also includes a 199er section), Fridays at 5:00 pm, and Saturdays at 12:30 pm (also includes a 299er section). The game fees are $2.00 per person for members or for nonmember residents for their first three visits. The fee for a non-resident invited guest is $5.00. If you need a bridge partner for any of the open games, call Barbara Dorf ( ), Squeak Conner ( ) or Lynne White ( ). For a partner in the Wednesday or Saturday limited games, call Sheila Ross ( ) or Lynne White ( ). For more information, visit the club website: or call club president, Jim Collart ( ). 18

by Joy O Dell Monday, Jan 30 th we had a birthday cake for Joy. On this morning she tripped coming in the back door of the club and had to go to the emergency room. When she got back from the emergency room the cake had disappeared!! Judy Callaham handed her a small end piece and then John surprised her with a nice piece he had saved in the refrigerator. John also took a picture of the cake and Joy did get to see what it looked like. Everyone still got to wish her a happy birthday. Here is a picture of the Joy s left knee after 11 stitches in the emergency room. In 1995 she had her knee cap removed because arthritis had become so severe there was not much left. So, the fall just dug in deeply and pushed the skin away from the knee joint. As you can see the swelling was almost as bad as the stitches. You can also see some results of five other surgeries on the same knee. There are plenty of scars that will go along with this new one. However, she is doing fine now and all is good. Lilyan Edelstein was surprised with a beautiful cake from Ettore s Bakery to celebrate her birthday. Mark Grunseth brought the cake and you can see in the picture how surprised she was. Lilyan plays with Mark in the Invitational game almost every Wednesday. They usually will place and their game is quite good. She is one of the sweetest ladies you will ever meet. The smile you see in this picture is one you will see on her face a lot. Everyone wishes her a very happy birthday and many more. So, how would you like to recover 88 chairs? Debra Leggett just finished doing that number of chairs at the Sacramento Bridge Center. She put in new foam and reupholstered every chair by herself. I have seen her husband Doug carry seats and backs in and out of the club to help her some. I can t imagine how tiring this job must have been. She has done an amazing job. The chairs all look brand new and it helps the club to look especially nice. They are also very comfortable. When you see her at the club tell her how much you appreciate all that she did. Thank you Debra for all your hard work. And you always had a smile on your face! 21
Congratulations to Jan and Gary Soules! They had a % game on Wed, Feb 15 th. I guess their system was really working well for them that day. Jan plays mostly with Gary and he plays with John Jefferson and Bill Sanford. No matter who Gary plays with the score is going to be very good. In this picture they are standing in front one of the quilts Jan made and has hanging at the Sacramento Bridge Center. If you would like to see more of her beautiful work, just Google Jan Soules and her name will come up over ten times. You can go to the sites and see some of her other work. It is totally amazing what she can do with a piece of material. It is just as amazing as what Gary can do with his bridge games!! Here is to a couple of really amazing and talented people! We have three Club Championships this month: Tuesday March 7 th 11:00 am Monday March 20 th 11:00 am Friday March 31 st 11:00 am The Unit Game will be held at Folsom on Sunday March 12 th. Sacramento Bridge Center will be closed. Mark your calendars and plan to play in all of these special games. 22
Arden Manor Thursday Night 6:30 pm Sacramento Bridge Center Charles Smith, Director HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Pictured celebrating their February birthdays with the Arden Manor Bridge Club are Addie Mills (Feb.5th) and Clark Muldavin (Feb. 1st). SACRAMENTO BRIDGE CENTER The Saturday and Sunday afternoon games currently pay 3-4 times as many Masterpoints per table as the other weekly sessions. That is possible because the directors contribute $4 per table to an ACBL-designated charity. Let's reward this enterprise by supporting those games! 23
QUILTS by JAN SOULES by Barbara Wheeler Jan Soules is standing in front of her quilt which she calls, Sea Jewels, which is on display at the Sacramento Bridge Center. The pattern is Sea Urchins. The reverse side of the quilt is a beautiful sea scene. Jan began making quilts in 2000 when her daughter asked her to make a quilt for Jan s first grandchild. Jan has about 10 smaller quilts currently on display on the second floor of the McClatchy Library, nd Street, Sacramento. The display will last through April 26th. Here are some of her quilts on display: Spiral Mania Two Red Poppies
Bird with Orange Flower and Surfs Up 2016 Roosters in the Rain From Feb. 25th to March 3rd Jan is attending a quilters conference at Asilomar in Pacific Grove. She will have about 20 of her quilts on display there and will be the Artist in Residence. Jan is not only a talented quilter, but she is also a very good bridge player. She and her husband Gary have averaged 60% in the 35 games that they have played together at SBC this past year. Jan is a Diamond Life Master with over 5600 Master Points. 25
