2 Katherine Ewing, President Unit 505 Board of Directors Happy Fall to All Unit Board Elections are coming up. A very important reminder: Please let Pat Ingoglia (patingoglia@hotmail.com) know if you are interested in running. In accordance with our By Laws, we ask that those who are interested please send a short bio and a picture to Beth Mora, Kibitzer Newsletter editor (emorab@comcast.net) by October 27th to be included in the November issue of the Kibitzer newsletter. See the information on the next page regarding dates for submitting your candidacy and voting. Our September Sectional was not as well attended as it has been in the past. For the very first time in many years, we lost money. Where were all of you? We thank the many hands who helped to set up, keeping the tables clean and taking them down on Sunday. Congratulations to the winners. The NLM Sectional is going on at the Sacramento Bridge Club Saturday, September 30th and Sunday, October 1st. Hope to see many of you there, there s still time to grab a partner and enjoy Sunday s game. GOOD LUCK. The next Unit Board Meeting and Game will be October 22 nd. Hope many will attend. It is at the Sacramento Bridge Club, Unit Board meeting at 10:00 a.m., with game at 12:00. WANTED: one of the agenda items at the Board meeting October 22nd will be finding a new location for Sectionals. We have lost the La Sierra Community Center site for the December Sectional and are looking for a new location ASAP. If you have a suggestion we thank you for your input. Our Co-Chairs have spent many hours searching, visiting and calling places to see if we can afford the price and get the dates in December. Watch for more information in the Kibitzer newsletter, and on our website at: As the weather cools, remember the local bridge clubs are heated and many hours can be spent there playing bridge. See you at the bridge tables. 2

8 FAKE NEGATIVE DOUBLE by Clark Muldavin Michael Lawrence s 2017 book, Judgment at Bridge 2n on Page 102 discusses use of a fake negative double by third seat. Bidding [1H-(1S)-DBL] this negative double usually shows about 7 hcp or more and 4-4(5) in the minors with one or two small hearts. Perhaps with 765-Q-A743-QJ742. With the same bidding, make a fake negative double with AK When your partner (opener) bids 2C convert to 2D showing six. This is an equal level conversion (ELC) negative double which is much like the equal level conversion takeout double use by some advanced players. 8

Club Championship and Unit Games award more points! Invite a friend! TOURNAMENT TIPS Sam Sandusky with thanks to Eddie Kantar Playing with fire at matchpoints is far more common than rubber or even team or Swiss play. Risking a contract at Swiss or Team play is unthinkable but at matchpoints is quite common. You are about to play the hand, so ask yourself: 1) what contract do I expect other pairs to be in? 2) Is this a great, good, poor or hopeless contract? Base your play on the answer. *if doubled, play safe, even in matchpoints *Do not make safety or cautious plays in a normal contract at matchpoints *In matchpoints, risk going down one or two for an overtrick or two *To create a swing in a normal contract play a suit abnormally, the opposite of the field *In an inferior contract, risk anything to get a better score When doing all of this have apologies ready for your partner. He or she will surely understand. 9 RACE FOR THE POINTS! 18 by Richard Proffitt October has arrived and it s time to get ready for the ghosts and goblins of Halloween. But you don t need to let those spooks haunt your bridge game, instead, start coming to our club s free bridge lessons. Lessons are presented on Wednesdays almost every week and begin promptly at 11:45 am in the Kilaga Springs Lodge prior to the regularly scheduled game. If you do not have a partner for the game, don t let that stop you from coming to the lesson. Lessons are open to anyone, whether playing that day, or not. The next lesson on Oct. 4 will be given by Ann McClelland on balancing. To find out the subject of future lessons go to the home page of the club website (see below). For tournament players, there will be several opportunities to compete relatively close to home in October. The Carson-Tahoe Sectional will be held in Carson City from Thurs., Oct. 5 through Sun., Oct. 8 at the Plaza Conference Center. Then, you won t want to miss the Reno Regional to be held during the week beginning on Mon., Oct. 9 at The Nugget Casino and Hotel in Sparks, NV. Mel and Enlow Ose's 70th Wedding Anniversary On Sept. 27, 2017 Mel and Enlow Ose celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Mel and Enlow met as students at Iowa State College in Ames, IA. Enlow was a native of Williams, IA, and Mel grew up in Woodbury, TN. Enlow had enlisted in the Navy and was attending Iowa State under the GI Bill. He received degrees in both Mechanical Engineering and in General (Management) Engineering. Mel obtained her degree in Nutrition and then did an internship at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston to obtain her certificate as a dietician. At the end of Mel s internship, Enlow and Mel were married in Woodbury. Enlow had taken a job at General Motors in Anderson, IN. There they made friends playing social bridge. In 1955, after 8 years with GM, they headed to CA with 3 daughters, Margie, Mary, and Susan, all under 6, and son Doug on the way. Enlow had taken a job in commercial real estate with Coldwell Banker. He later became a developer. Enlow and Mel took up duplicate bridge about 13 years ago. Mel says bridge has been a great social tool.

25 Another birthday and another yummy cake brought by Betty Roth for Rina Humphers. She plays with Betty and also Ulla McDaniel. She seems to always have a smile on her face. The cake looked happy and full of sunshine. Our Invitational players enjoy celebrating birthdays or is it the cake they enjoy!!! George Brown also celebrated his birthday with a chocolate cake. George plays with John Hughes and has for more than 30 years now and they are still going strong. He also plays with Karen Holleron, Doris Niemann, and others. 25

26 On this day Fran Duchon had Joy O Dell stay home and she planned a pot luck. (Joy had been sick for a week and in order to get well, Fran insisted she take a week off.) As you can see, there was plenty of food to eat. This did the trick as Joy is back and feeling much better. They also celebrated Josh Haskett s birthday. **Thank you all for the great food. I also want to thank all of the ladies who brought dessert during the summer months. It was a real treat for me to not have to worry about dessert. You cannot believe the time it saved me. I appreciate every one of you for all you did, both for the dessert and for the pot luck. You are a really wonderful group of bridge players full of kindness and generosity. Joy O Dell 26

27 Jan Soules has 2 new quilts on display at the Sacramento Bridge Center. The quilt shown to the right is called Balancing Act. It is 36 by 48. It is an original design and was completed in May Jan says, "This quilt allowed me to play with the circular motifs. The background is pieced and the small circles are appliquéd on. While this quilt did not do so well in competition, it is one of my favorite pieces! The quilt on the left is called Fighting Dragons. It is 47 by 53 and was completed by Jan in March Jan says, This early piece won me my first Golden Bear award for Best of Show at the CA State Fair in It is composed of a variety of pieced and appliquéd blocks. The diagonal setting creates movement. It is an original design. Geisha Girl is on the reverse and on the right is a close up of the front of the quilt. Thank you Barbara Wheeler for submitting these photos and write up for all to enjoy! 27
