2 2 Did You Know Laugh It Up In April, we celebrate National Humor Month. A good laugh can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure, elevate mood, boost the immune system, and make you feel good. Studies also show that a good sense of humor may help prevent heart disease and heart attacks. Some ways to expand your sense of humor include: look for absurd or silly activities that go on around you each day, increase your exposure to comedies and sitcoms, take a few minutes each day to read joke or humor books, and remind yourself to have fun every day. Write It April 1 begins National Card and Letter Writing Month. Take some time and write a note or a letter to your friends and family. They will love the surprise that will surely brighten their day. April Is National Pecan Month Think outside the pie and grab a handful of pecans! With American adults and children snacking more, it s time to spotlight the natural, healthy, fuss-free pecan. The National Pecan Shellers Association (NPSA) has a proposition for you. This April, consider snacking healthy and snacking on pecans. A one-ounce serving of 15 to 20 pecan halves packs a nutritious punch: Pecans contain more antioxidants than any other nut variety according to ORAC values Pecans can help reduce the risk of heart disease and lower cholesterol levels Pecans contain more than 19 vitamins and minerals Pecans are a natural, high-quality source of protein and naturally sodium free April Is OT Month This month is Occupational Therapy Month, which spotlights the work of occupational therapists and OT assistants. Working in a variety of health care settings, these professionals help patients live life to the fullest by improving their abilities to perform daily activities with specialized therapy, support and services. The Power of Oatmeal By Brian Rosso, R.D. This month I am writing about the power of oatmeal. I hope you find the information below helpful in your everyday lives: Oatmeal is a low-fat and low-calorie food. Oatmeal has been shown to lower cholesterol levels. Research is showing that eating oatmeal can remove bad cholesterol (LDL) from your body. Eating oatmeal can reduce your waistline. One of the great benefits of eating oatmeal is that it is very filling, so you feel full longer and eat less. The soluble fiber in oatmeal can help balance blood sugar levels.oatmeal s fiber can help lower or maintain a person s blood pressure. Oatmeal is a great source of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, which is important for vision; vitamin B6, which can help prevent heart disease; iron; and calcium. Oatmeal is a great source of fiber. There are 2 grams of fiber in a one-cup serving of oatmeal. Enjoy oatmeal every morning at American House.
