Asparagus is a popular menu item at American House. I hope you enjoy the following facts about this nutritious vegetable! Asparagus was believed to have originated in Greece 2,500 years ago. Asparagus comes in three colors: white (grown underground to avoid sunlight, and very popular in Northwest Europe), green and purple. Asparagus is part of the lily family. After planting, it takes three years to harvest asparagus for the first time. From a health aspect, asparagus acts as a diuretic and a laxative. Michigan is ranked third in producing asparagus nationally. Our state produces 25 million pounds of asparagus annually (a market value of $15 million) on 11,000 acres. Prime growing season is early May to late June. Asparagus is 93 percent water. Five ounces of asparagus provide three grams of fiber and only 20 calories, and it is fat-free. Asparagus is a great source of folic acid, potassium, protein, and vitamins A and C. Visit an American House today and enjoy some asparagus. 5 6 Popular Classic The Jungle Book An immediate hit after its publication in 1894, Rudyard Kipling s collection of short stories and poems gained a new generation of fans after the Disney animated film adaptation was released in Three of the tales feature young Mowgli, a boy raised by wolves, mentored by Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear, and pursued by Shere Khan the tiger. The remaining stories highlight various animals, such as the mongoose Rikki-tikki-tavi, that are outside Mowgli s world. Each story has been interpreted as a fable about growing up and fitting in. The original Jungle Book came out in 1967; it was Walt Disney s 19th animated movie. This month it hits the theatres as a LIVE version with real animals and people. Horse Play There will be no horsing around in Louisville, Ky., as owners, trainers and jockeys get serious about the Kentucky Derby. Here are a few facts you may not know about the first gem in horse racing s Triple Crown, annually the first Saturday in May: Open for business. Aristides, a 3-year-old colt, won the first Derby on May 17, Maximum horsepower. In 1907, the facility allowed auto races onto the track. Bet on it. The track lowered the minimum wager on a race from $5 to $2 in Sounds good. New York journalist Bill Corum coined the phrase run for the roses in Derby dish. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in many areas of the United States with rowdy and colorful parties, but do you know the history behind the holiday? Frequently confused with Mexico s Independence Day (Sept. 16), it s actually a celebration of the Mexican victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, An underdog Mexican force, led by Gen. Ignacio Zaragoza, defeated the well-trained forces of Napoleon III s French Army. The victory symbolized Mexico s resistance to foreign occupation, its patriotism and unity. 6 7 GO TIGERS!!! Opening Day Celebration! Miguel Cabrera, known to his many fans as MIGGY, hit a solo home run at the home opening game on Friday, April 8th, at Comerica Park. Final score was Tigers 4 NY Yankees 0! COMERICA PARK HISTORY Comerica Park is a Open Air Baseball Park located in the heart of Downtown Detroit. It s the home of our Detroit Tigers Major League Baseball Team. This Beautiful stadium replaced the older one in the year It holds 41,782 people Opened: April 11, 2000 Team: Detroit Tigers Owner: Detroit/Wayne County Stadium Authority Architects were: Mike llitch and David Rockwell Tiger fans say it s a GREAT park to watch the games in because there is no obstructed views from the foul poles. Perfect Pitching On May 5, 1904, Boston Red Sox pitcher Cy Young pitched a perfect game against the Detroit Tigers. It was only the third perfect game in baseball history. A perfect game is one in which no opposing player reaches base, so no hits, walks or hit batters. Young pitched 22 seasons and compiled 511 wins a record that stands today. The Cy Young Award honors the best pitchers in Major League Baseball each year. Carolyn M. has her eye on those Tigers!! Comerica Park Home of the Detroit Tigers Fans will consume 470,000 hot dogs and 183,000 sausages for the 2016 Tigers season. That means one of every six fans will eat a hot dog at a game this year. The Tigers were ranked 9th in the MLB with home attendance last year.
