2 2 Talk About Health Nutrient of the Month: Vitamin D This nutrient works with calcium to maintain strong, healthy bones. People with a vitamin D deficiency can develop rickets (in children) or osteoporosis (in adults). Salmon, tuna, eggs and mushrooms are some of the few natural sources of the vitamin, but foods such as milk, cereals and orange juice are often fortified with it. The human body can make vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, giving it its nickname the sunshine vitamin. Spending 10 to 15 minutes outside in the sun without sunscreen three times a week should produce the vitamin D needed by the body. Heart Disease Prevention By: Brian Rosso, R.D. This month I am writing about living a heart-healthy lifestyle. I hope you find the information below helpful in your everyday lives. Visit your doctor on a regular basis. Monitor your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Maintain a healthy weight. Keep your body mass index (BMI) level under 25. BMI levels above 25 are associated with an increased risk of developing heart disease. Your BMI level is determined by using a formula that includes a person s weight and height. Here is a list of heart-healthy foods: salmon, oatmeal, tuna, carrots, spinach, broccoli, sweet potatoes, asparagus, oranges, tomatoes, cantaloupe, and tea. All of these foods can be found on the menu at American House. Limit your salt and saturated fat intake. American House offers many heart-healthy food choices on our menu; just look for the picture of the heart. Stay active. Try to do some form of physical activity 30 minutes every day.this is also a great way to manage stress! American House offers many ways to live a heart-healthy lifestyle. Arthritis Awareness Month Many people with arthritis are so desperate for relief that they are willing to try remedies that have not been tested or proven to be helpful. Some of these, such as snake venom, are actually harmful. Others, such as copper bracelets, are harmless but have no official research to back their validity. How can you tell whether a remedy is unproven? The remedy claims that a treatment, such as a lotion or cream, works for all types of arthritis and other diseases. Scientific support is reported as coming from only one research study. The label has no directions for use or warnings about side effects. Even with these fake remedies, you can find some trustworthy, nontraditional techniques to help with your symptoms. For example, recent studies suggest that Chinese acupuncture may ease osteoarthritis (OA) pain for some people. Others have had luck with dietary supplements, such as glucosamine and chondroitin. Research now shows that these two dietary supplements may help lessen OA pain. Scientists are studying alternative treatments to find out how they work and if they keep the joint changes caused by arthritis from getting worse.

6 7 Wayne- Westland Senior Chorus Tuesday, May 3rd, the Wayne-Westland Senior Chorus will be performing their spring show at our 2:00pm Cinco de Mayo May 5th is Cinco de Mayo. Come enjoy the 2:15 in the dining room. Live Music Entertainment by Kelly Miller Mother s Day Friday, May 6th, we will be having a special Mother s Day from 8:00 to 10:00am. You are welcome to invite guests that would like to join you. Please RSVP your guest. Dinnertime Music Friday, May 6th, John Hanba will be playing soft music during mealtimes. He is happy to take requests that you may have. Senior Yoga Class Neeta Patel is our Senior Yoga instructor. Classes this month will be Thursdays, May 5th & 10:00am in the Cafe. NEW Tai Chi Tuesday, May 10:00am will be our communities first Senior Chair Tai Chi class. Everyone is welcome to join. Movin & Groovin Movin & Groovin is a chair aerobics class designed especially for seniors by Brooke Munson. Get your morning exercise with a little dancing. Friday, May 10:00am Chair Massages Tuesday, May 17th, from 10:00 to 12:00 Sissel Bridges will be giving her Norwegian massages. Be sure to sign up in the activity book. She is only able to do 8 massages. Jiffy Factory Tour Monday, May 23rd, our community will be taking a trip to Chelsea, Michigan, to take a tour of the Jiffy Peanut Butter factory. Music Entertainment Every 2:15 everyone is welcome to come enjoy live music entertainment in the dining room. Each week you will get to listen to different musicians perform a special show for the community. Resident Meeting This month s Resident Meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 2:30 in the dining room. This meeting will talk about Community Events, News, and safety procedures. If you are a new resident to our community, this is a great way to get to know more about us American House Senior Choir The Choir Rehearsing for their DSO Performance.
