March Is Irish-American Heritage Month Since 1991, presidents of both political parties have designated March as Irish American Heritage Month to recognize the contribution that Irish immigrants and their descendants have played in the formation of our nation. Among those contributions are nine signers of the Declaration of Independence, over twenty of Washington s generals, the first man to hold a commission in the United States Navy, over 190,000 Irish-born Americans who fought in the Civil War, pioneering women such as Nellie Bly and Christa McAuliffe, the inventor of the modern submarine and 253 Medal of Honor recipients who list the place of their birth as Ireland. Easter Eggs By: Brian Rosso, R.D. The Easter egg is a tradition that is celebrated around the world. Many people believe that the egg is a sign of rebirth. Originally, people would take great time and effort to paint and decorate eggs. However, over time, some people chose to use plastic eggs or chocolate eggs instead. Decorating Easter eggs dates back 2,500 years. Countries such as Russia, Romania and Poland still create very detailed colored eggs. Some people prefer tan Easter eggs, so they boil the eggs in water containing onion skins. In England, different colored yarns are also tied to the eggs to create a unique look. On Easter in the United Kingdom, painted eggs are rolled down steep hills for fun. In the United States, children roll eggs on the ground using a spoon, which is an annual event at the White House. Easter egg hunts are another famous tradition. Beeping Easter eggs are now used to allow the visually impaired the opportunity to also hunt for Easter eggs. Happy Easter!

5 6 Talk About It Good Friday Saint Theodore will be serving communion on Good Friday, March 25th, in the second floor Solarium. Service will be 9:30am. Music Entertainment Every 2:15, live Music Entertainment is in the Dining room. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join us. This is a great way to meet new people and enjoy listening to a variety of music like Oldies, Motown, Jazz, Country and much more. Bingo Callers We are looking for volunteers to call Bingo every other Monday while we are at Choir Rehearsal and also on Saturdays. We are running out of Bingo callers and is unable to dedicate to 3 days a week because of other building programs. Speak with for details. Senior Yoga Class On the first and third Thursdays of each month, Neeta Patel hosts a yoga class just for 10:00am. Everyone is welcome! American House Senior Choir American House traveling choir is always welcoming new members. Rehearsals this month will be Monday, March our location (1:30 in the Cafe ) & Monday, March Riverview (12:00). St. Patrick s Day St. Pattie s Day is Thursday, March 17th. 6 7 Love Is Ageless Celebration February 12th was our annual Love is Ageless Valentine s Dance. We d like to thank everyone who attended this event to spread love. Also, a special thank you goes out to the staff that worked so hard to make this event possible. we could not have done it without everyone s hard work and positive attitudes.
