1 American Legion Post 1776 November 2017 Volume 1, Number 11 Commander Carla Tappainer st Vice, Bob Nelson 2nd Vice, Joe Tappainer Adjutant, Gary Odegard Finance Officer Gary Odegard Chaplain, Bill Weis Historian, Tim Liffrig Service Officer Bill Nygaard Sergeant at Arms Rodney Southwick Operations Chair Wayne Brinton message from your Commander Greetings!! How was everyone s Halloween? I hope you gave out lots of candy and had some fun with the kids and grandkids!! I know that Joe and I always have a ton of fun!! The party at the Legion was great as always and the costumes were amazing!! We are coming up fast on the Holiday Season!! Thanksgiving is right around the corner and we will be doing the baskets again this year. If you know of a veteran who is need of a Thanksgiving or Christmas Basket make sure you let Bill Nygaard know right away. We are also having our Children s Christmas Party as usual this year on December 10 th. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there to greet everyone. Linsey has set up another Paint Night for us to participate in. It will be a fundraiser to get gifts for the kids party so come on down and paint with us on November 30 th at 7pm. Make sure you get your tickets early before it sells out!! The Club is doing very well!! Linsey, Joan and all the employees are doing an excellent job of keeping us on track!! We ve added some activities like Trivia on Thursday night and we might be adding more days to do Horse Racing and Meat Raffles to keep everyone busy during the winter months!! We might even add some Hot Wheels and Hex Bug races to the schedule!! More to come on that later. It seems that our country, now more than ever, is divided. I don t know about you, but I think we should all be more considerate and be better listeners. It s time to stop all this fighting and bad mouthing everyone. It doesn t serve any purpose other than to create division among us. People are saying horrible things just because they don t agree with the politics it s so sad. I think we all should remember what Martin Luther King Jr. said: The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. EASTVIEW CROSS COUNTRY BOOSTERS CLUB 2. EASTVIEW COMMUNITY FOUNDATION 3. A.V.H.S. HOCKEY BOOSTER CLUB 4. G.A.P.P. VETERANS TRANSPORTATION 5. A.V.H.S. BAND BOOSTERS 6. TEE IT UP FOR THE TROOPS 7. SPECIAL OLYMPICS 8. A.V.H.S. SWIM SWIM AND DIVE BOOSTERS Once again a busy month for expenses. Sometimes there is a limited amount of money for donations(don t forget, the State gets about $375, a year as their cut). I am proud of the hard work and dedication our employees put into their jobs. One of the reasons that I feel our sales are increasing is to to Bingo and the other nightly events the Club is having! Thanks Linsay! This month also, we will be giving checks for our Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets which is one of the Community events so many volunteers look forward to. Attend the General Membership meeting and get involved! I hate to say it, but don t forget someone is making a list and checking it twice! Uh oh, that means that snow is just around the corner. Bless those in harms way, and more and more it is beginning to include our homeland, say a prayer and remember! Well until next month, still serving Veterans and Community! Marv Jarvis, Gambling Manager Post 1776 Post 1776.com September saw a noticeable drop in traffic from August. But that was to be expected as we were calling an end to a fantastic summer and getting the kids back into school. Web traffic peaks for the Post1776.com web site in July and August. Be sure to check out the many features of the web site on your next visit. American Legion Post 1776, Granada Drive, Apple Valley MN Page 2
3 Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Network (BTYR) The Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Network of Apple Valley exists to serve Veterans, those actively in the Military, and their families by assisting them any way we can. Your help and support has been and continues to be very much appreciated! Please join us by contributing your time and talents, and the special abilities you have. Some recent examples of how we have served: 1. The monthly Military Appreciation Dinners continued last month with about 115 participating. Please join us for a meal and interesting, informational speakers. We partner with the Legion to provide excellent meals, which the BTYR serves to Veterans for a voluntary donation. Preregistration is requested - just RSVP at yellowribbonav@gmail.com or leave a message on our phone at All dinners are at the Apple Valley American Legion Post Upcoming Events: November 2 nd Regular Board Meeting 6:30 pm at the Apple Valley Legion November 16 th Military Appreciation Dinner, 5:30 pm Apple Valley Legion Please join us as we proudly serve our Veterans, their families, and currently serving military members. Historian Report In a few days we will be celebrating, actually recognizing, Armistice Day. It was named this as a tribute to the signing of the Armistice on November 11 th that ended World War II. In 1954, it was renamed to Veteran s Day to recognize all veterans in all wars. I would like to challenge all my fellow veterans to thank all the veterans that you know, send a text, post on Facebook, tweet, send an , make some calls, or simply pat them on the back and say Thank You for your Service. We should all take this charge to heart and mark this day with celebration and recognition, honoring all of America s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to sacrifice for the common good of this great country. I, for one, am very grateful to those that served before, with, and after my service. I can t think of a better country for which I could have served. Thank You for your Service. Be Proud! We are the American Legion! Tim Liffrig ~ Post 1776 Historian post humor and trivia The sergeant-major growled at the young soldier, "I didn t see you at camouflage training this morning." "Thank you very much, sir." American Legion Post 1776, Granada Drive, Apple Valley MN Page 3
4 Scouting Update he Dutch Oven Cook-off at Lac Lavon Park was a big success. We had Webelos from 3 different packs join us to find out more about Boy Scouts and what our Troop has to offer. The theme was Italian night and the scouts made things like lasagna, spaghetti and pizza. It was such a success that there were no leftovers. Our Troop campout for the month was Nerstrand Big Woods State Park. We had 2 Webelos join us from a Pack. The scouts covered topics such as camping, cycling and navigation on a hike to the falls. The Troop performed a conservation service project and collected native grass and flower seeds. The campout wrapped up with a camp fire and skits on Saturday night before heading home on Sunday. One of our Apple Valley High School students completed his Eagle project at his church. The Troop help the scout restore the church playground and swing set. It was a big impact for the church and the children are enjoying the new playground equipment. This scout has submitted his Eagle paperwork and is waiting for his Board of Review date to be set. The Troop also has two more scouts that will be completing their Eagle projects before the end of October. In addition, there are several other scouts that are close to completion on their Eagle Scout rank as well. It is looking like we will have a busy year for Eagles! The Boy Scout Troop 205 is doing the Christmas tree lot at Cub again. The lot will open November 24th the day after Thanksgiving. Yours in Scouting, Beth Kirchhoff Scoutmaster Troop 205 SAL Report Our S.A.L. Chapter voted to make donations to the Mission Outpost food shelf and a donation to the Hastings veteran's home. A reminder: We will be having a meat raffle on Veteran's Day starting approximately 11am until done. Our profits from our events go to helping veterans and their families and our community. Bruce Bigler S.A.L. Commander MECHANIC'S CORNER Fall is here and winter is right around the corner. Be sure your battery is up to the test. Have it checked out with a load test. Summer heat bakes the dickens out of your battery, but it doesn't show up until we get the Minnesota cold. The average life span of a battery in our state is about 5 years. Be safe. Bruce Bigler Apple Days Apples will be given out to every employee in School District 196 on November 16 th beginning at 08:30 and leaving for the schools at 09:00. We need people to help delivering the apples to the schools! Call Bob at: You should bring a two wheeler cart and wear your Legion hats, jackets, ties so they know you're from the Legion.
