Welcome to summer!! I hope everyone is enjoying all the rain and heat! I know that my yard and flowers and doing great with all the great weather we are having! I m looking forward to eating fresh veggies this year and going to all the local farmers markets! July 4 th is just a few days away and we are in desperate need of volunteers to help throughout the day. We need everyone to come and put in at least a couple of hours of their time so everything will run smoothly. The chickens won t cook themselves and the beer won t pour itself. We need servers, ticket sellers, cookers and tons of other stuff. If you volunteer, you get a free t-shirt and drink tickets. Please call Jorie and tell her you will come and help. Don t forget about the Department Convention in Rochester on July 21 st thru July 23 rd. It would be nice to have a good representation of our Post at the Convention since it s so close to us. I hope to see a lot of you there. There is a lot of information that will be put out and lots of fun to be had. Our Bean Bag Tournament was a HUGE success. A big Thank-You goes out to Sarah and everyone who helped put this event together. We had tons of people show up. from beginners (like me) to the pros (not like me). I had no idea that people could get so serious about tossing bean bags. We are thinking about doing some more tournaments and possibly doing a winter league in the banquet room. It s a great opportunity to get more young veterans into our club and raise some money along the way. As always, please spread to word to any veterans you know we need more members to be involved with the day to day activities in the club. We need to represent ourselves in the community so let s get out there and tell everyone who we are! A couple of quotes to get you thinking. Freedom has its life in the hearts, the actions, the spirit of men and so it must be daily earned and refreshed else like a flower cut from its life-giving roots, it will wither and die. ~Dwight D. Eisenhower This, then, is the state of the union: free and restless, growing and full of hope. So it was in the beginning. So it shall always be, while God is willing, and we are strong enough to keep the faith. ~Lyndon B. Johnson Happy 4 th of July!! Sincerely, Commander Carla July 2016 Page 1

2 From the heart Let us all remember our fellow legionnaires and their families who are dealing with health problems. Please keep them in your prayers. Dear Heavenly Father, Bless our nation and Bless each of us, as we thank you for our independence. Amen. Written by Bill Weis. Rest in Peace Bob Summers, Oct.26 th, 2015 John Seville, June 2 nd, (Celebration of Life, July 28 th 1-3pm Post 1776) Paul Vetsch, June 5th Happy Summer. It is finally here. By the time you read this we will have installed our new officers for the Auxiliary. Welcome President Gorda Olsen. We wish you the best in the coming year. Hopefully the Fourth of July was nice (not too hot, not too cool and wet). I want to thank Maryalyce and all the crew that helped the dog n brat sale be a huge success. It is a good fund raiser for the Auxiliary. We are able to use our profits in helping the community. Our six girls all attended Girl s State and had a wonderful learning experience. We will have the girls attend our fall meetings and tell us about their opportunities at Girl s State. The Auxiliary awarded two scholarships to two graduating seniors. One is going into to computer science and the other nursing. We wish both of them the best. Thank you to all of you that helped the Auxiliary succeed this past year Written by Janet Thompson, Auxiliary President, jthom55542@aol.com, Vendors Wanted! Please contact Marlene Heinzen at to reserve your spot! Saturday, September 24, 9-4pm. Save your unwanted trash it may become another s treasure! Don t miss out on the fun and shopping. We ll have a big variety of vendors rent a space for only $30 and join us! Good time to house clean and make some money. Auxiliary ladies will serve brats & hot dogs, 9-4. We need help, so call me. Spread the word!! Call me for the details. Submitted by Marlene Heinzen. Thank you to the Grumpy Old Men for putting up all our poppy cards and always being there for us! The date for our Fall Craft Sale is Saturday, October 29 th, 9-4pm. Set up is on the 28 th, so mark it on your calendar. Call me if you d like to rent a space. Submitted by Marlene Heinzen, Welcome to all at Apple Valley Post Summer is finally upon us. People have smiles on their faces and the lake on their minds. Memorial Day was so nice for our program in the back yard. A lot of people showed up and we had some good speakers on hand to give some insight on what Memorial Day is about. The Legion Birthday was celebrated by so many people and the food was fantastic. Thanks to all that helped out with the pig roast which was a lot of fun. New and old officers should be installed by now and I hope to see a good year ahead of us. We are a Legion Family and it is good to see us working together for the good of the Legion. As was brought up before the new dues for the SAL as of July 1 st is $25 and for duel members it is $10. Thanks to all and will talk again next month. For God and Country We Stand Tall. Written by Rich Jensen, S.A.L. Commander, richard.jensen@suncountry.com, July 2016 Page 2

3 Membership July 1st begins the 2017 membership year. You should be receiving your dues statement within the next two weeks. Apple Valley Post is the third largest post in Minnesota and growing. Post 1776 has over 1,100 members. I want to thank all of paid members for their support in making our Post one of the largest. There is some confusion as to when dues should be paid. Let me clarify the two key date. Membership dues for 2017 are due by January 1st. If not paid by January 1st 2017 memberships not paid will be delinquent, memberships not paid by February 1st will be expired and you will not receive your Legion magazine and newspaper or allowed to vote in any elections. So it behoves all of you to make sure you pay your dues early. Dues for 2017 are $40. Written by John Lenvik, Membership Chair House news No report. Written by Wayne Brinton, Operations Chair A moment in history. What is the Preamble and What Does it Mean? (Part 4) To Foster and Perpetuate a 100 Percent Americanism... Americanism is the gist of the American ideals of freedom, justice, individual rights and limitless opportunities. It embraces all the freedoms we cherish and all the rights that are guaranteed to us. It is the very opposite of hatred, bigotry and intolerance. Americanism is the creed that has blazed the world-wide trail for justice, fair play, and decency, belief in God, private enterprise, universal education, and progress in all human endeavors. It puts a premium on the virtues of loyalty, patriotism, hard work and thrift. As we celebrate the founding of our great Nation, our Freedom, and our Independence, we need to remember what Americanism really means. Happy Independence Day! Be Proud! We are the American Legion! Written by Tim Liffrig, Historian To serve you better No report God Bless Our Military, Written by Bill Nygaard, Service Officer, williampost1776@gmail.com, (952) Your Left, Your left, Your left-right-left! Please call me if you need the services of the Color Guard or you would like information on becoming a Guard. Written by Bill Quintus, Color Guard Director, bill@essbrothers.com, Gambling News Hello again Fellow Legionnaires and Legion Family! Where has the time gone? So far this year it has been Minnesota crazy weather, in one week you can experience three seasons in the same week. Gambling continues to do really well, except that we have some reduced hours during the week, which cuts into our deposits. If you as members want this to continue as a top Legion Post in Minnesota, please dig deep and come up with some ideas to liven things up. On the other hand it is hard to find paid employees to work some of our raffles and fun things. If you have ideas for dances, bands or anything for the Back Banquet Room contact Jorie the General Manager or Carla Tappainer the Commander. A great deal of time and money went into making it more presentable, it is a shame to see it sit vacant on Fridays and Saturdays. Donations this month were extensive, with the City of Apple Valley being the largest recipient. The 4 th of July (Oops Freedom Days) and the city wide music program Arts in the Park which features a band every Friday evening. Look for our brand spanking new 76ers Uniforms in the parade. Donations for Month: 1. APPLE VALLEY ARTS FOUNDATION $ G.A.P.P SERVICES $ CURE SEARCH CHILDRENS CANCER $ EASTVIEW H.S. CENTER BASED EDUCATION $ APPLE VALLEY MENS SOCCER BOOSTERS $ TROOP 458 EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT $ APPLE VALLEY FOUNDATION (4 TH OF JULY) $11, UNIT 1776 (POPPIES) $ 1500 (Continued) July 2016 Page 3

4 (Gambling, from page 3) The one sad note is that we couldn t field a Legion Baseball team this year due to shall we say to be politically correct a lack of interest. Next year we will try to field a team from Apple Valley High School, Eastview and the School of Environmental Science (Zoo School) rather than the tradition of just Apple Valley H.S.. You would think that with Al Neumann a former Minnesota Twins player as coach you would think that would peak a greater interest. The Junior Babes is still on track, but it isn t the same. Until next month, still serving Veterans and Community! Written by Marv Jarvis, Gambling Mgr Installation of the 2016/2017 Officers June 21, 2016 Interesting 4 th of July Tidbits! We celebrate American Independence Day on the Fourth of July every year. We think of July 4, 1776, as a day that represents the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation. But July 4, 1776 wasn't the day that the Continental Congress decided to declare independence (they did that on July 2, 1776). It also wasn t the day we started the American Revolution either (that had happened back in April 1775). And.it wasn't the day Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence (that was in June 1776). Or the date on which the Declaration was delivered to Great Britain (that didn't happen until November 1776). Or the date it was signed (that was August 2, 1776). So what did happen on July 4, 1776? The Continental Congress approved the final wording of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, They'd been working on it for a couple of days after the draft was submitted on July 2nd and finally agreed on all of the edits and changes. July 4, 1776, became the date that was included on the Declaration of Independence, and the fancy handwritten copy that was signed in August (the copy now displayed at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.) It s also the date that was printed on the Dunlap Broadsides, the original printed copies of the Declaration that were circulated throughout the new nation. So when people thought of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776 was the date they remembered. In contrast, we celebrate Constitution Day on September 17th of each year, the anniversary of the date the Constitution was signed, not the anniversary of the date it was approved. If we d followed this same approach for the Declaration of Independence we d being celebrating Independence Day on August 2nd of each year, the day the Declaration of Independence was signed! Submitted by Glenn Sonnee, Secretary, gdsonnee@gmail.com, Boy Scout Troop 205 Update Last month we elected new leadership for the Troop. They learned about and administered the democratic process and the importance of an individual vote as they grow to become future participating citizens. Also as part of their rank requirements we had an evening first aid session led by one of our adult leaders who is an EMT in Lakeville. The boys practiced on administering first aid for a variety of injuries on medical mannequin s with their own medical kits! As part of Memorial Day, Troop 205 was eager to participate in the Memorial Day service at the Legion this year. At the end of June, the Troop is off to Tesomas Boy Scout Summer Camp in Wisconsin on June 26th - July 2nd. Thanks to the Legion we will be using our new tents! Thirty-four boys and their newly elected (and trained) boy leaders are anticipating a great adventure since our Troop has never been to this camp.
